Olive Oyl and Ham Gravy debuted in December 1919. Olive’s brother Castor joined in January 1920 and her parents Nana and Cole came on board later that year.
Caster and Ham were the stars of the strip. Caster failing with one get rich scheme after another. Ham courted Olive without success. Popeye arrived in January 1929. Popeye won Olive’s affection and Ham was gone for good by March 1930.
J. Wellington Wimpy arrived in May 1931 and was soon a regular at Roughhouse’s Cafe. “I’ll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today” and “let’s you and him fight” became national catchphrases.
The Sea Hag and her minions were added in the early thirtys and the cast was completed with Poopdeck Pappy in 1936.
