A/N: Iâm so flattered that so many people enjoyed this. Feeling no pressure at all. I almost trashed it and started again but gotta stick to my truth ig. Sorry if this feels draggy, trying to make sure thereâs enough story without taking away from Tamteyâs main parts. Same shit writing so nothingâs changed there. This is my first time doing a tag list so I hope they worked properly.
Itâs been weird between you and Soâlek after your little talk the other night. It wasnât a âbadâ weird necessarily but it was definitely far from the normal you were accustomed to. He was still short in his responses, like he was with everyone, but he started looking at you. Making actual eye contact that wasnât threatening or standoffish. It was kinda freaking you out to be honest so you didnât focus on it, convincing yourself he was just opening up more with people.
Youâve been keeping busy lately, helping Nalin and Hajir collect medicinal plants, going with Anqa on patrol routes, trying to get Teylan outside with the others. Anything to not focus on his new attitude, that was absolutely not given especially towards you. If you thought about it youâd start to feel bad being so put off by something so small. But you were the only one he was acting this way with and itâs a small space, people notice changes in behavior fast.
So, onto the easier problem to focus on. Teylan was currently tinkering with an old radio heâd found laying around. You watched him fiddle with wires and melted plastic, trying to get it to work again. Alright, enough was enough. This kid needed some fresh air and you were going to deliver.Â
Your hands clamped down onto his shoulders, jarring his attention away from his project. âCome with me Teylan, I want to show you something.â
Heâs startled out of his thoughts, looking nervously up at you. âNo, no, I think Iâll just stay here where itâs safer. I want to get this working again, Alex is letting me use some of his tools to work on it.â
âYou havenât been outside in days, Teylan, you need fresh air. Itâll be here when you get back.â Youâre quick to pull him up before he can find a different reason to stay inside.Â
âTsmuke really, Iâm fine in here.â Even though he was protesting he didnât put up a fight as you dragged him outside, leading him under a stone path to a lift vine. âWhere are we going? I donât really thinkââ He pauses, looking at the vine cautiously then up at you.
âTeylan itâs a vine, itâs not going to bite you.â Heâs still reluctant when he follows you up, tapestry falls coming into view. He pauses for a moment, taking in the view. âCome, sit with me.â The roar of the falls muffled your footsteps as you led him to sit at the edge. Neither of you say anything for a while, just taking in the beauty of it.Â
Heâs the one who breaks the silence first. âThis is pretty.â
You smile already feeling yourself relax, shoulders dropping, breathing getting easier. âYeah, it is. I like to come here when the voice in my head is too loud. The water helps to drown it out, lets me think.â You pause for a moment before turning to him. âI want you to come here, when it all gets too much.â He takes a breath like heâs going to deny what you're insinuating. âDonât, I know this last week has been a lot on you. Youâre the one with the least memories of your home. Itâs scary when you have to find the courage to do something you were told was bad. But,â you gesture vaguely around you both. âThis world is where you belong. Itâs a part of you. Donât let those bad memories dictate how you live in it now.â
Heâs quiet, absorbing what you said. Shuffling closer to lean on you, just like when he was smaller. âI donât know how.â
You let your shoulder push into him, grounding the both of you. âI know, but youâre not alone. You have the other Sarentu with you. And you have Soâlek, someone whoâs been out on Pandora his whole life. Iâm sure heâd help if you asked.â
âI canât, he hates me.â
âNo he doesnât, he just doesnât understand the things youâre into.â
He looks at you exasperated, âThatâs the same thing. I see how he looks at me when Iâm talking to Alex, learning about what heâs making or doing. When I help fix tech or work on it. He thinks Iâm a freak, I know it.â He shrinks back in on himself, pulling at the brim of his hat to hide.
You are quick to grab at his wrist, trying to stop his fall into self-deprecation. âListen to me, Teylan. You are not a freak. I am not saying that just because I care for you, itâs the truth. Your love for technology doesnât make you less naâvi. It highlights the passions you have inside of you. No one should shame you for that.â
He doesnât argue with you, but you can tell your words didnât bring a lot of relief either. Teylan wouldnât admit it, but he cares a lot about what the others, especially Soâlek, had to think about him. He just wanted to fit in, feel connected to his family. You opted to let go of his wrist, settling for rubbing soothing circles on his back. Letting the sounds of the waterfall take over your words.
By the time you both got back Teylan had calmed down, getting pulled away by Alex to help him upstairs. You watch him for another second before going to find Soâlek. You must have had the timing of the century as you watched him gather his weapons, getting ready to leave.
âSoâlek, can I speak with you for a moment?âÂ
He glanced up from the magazine he was loading into his rifle, âQuickly, Tamtey brought more duty rosters back.â
âWow, heâs making quick work of those outposts, huh?â There isnât really a reaction to your joking tone, just a blank stare. âRight, sorry, youâre busy.â You take a quick look around and step closer, not wanting too many ears prying into your conversation. âListen, I know you donât exactly approve of Teylanâs interest in tech, but could you be a bit gentler with him? Heâs trying his best to belong out here. Youââ Your shoulders drop, looking away in shame, ears folded flat. âYou donât know what happened in those walls. The things I couldnât protect them from, couldnât stop.â
You take a deep breath looking up, meeting his eyes again. âIâm not asking you to understand why he likes what he likes. Just guide him, please? He needs naâvi on his side, more than he needs the rest of us.â
Soâlek seems to think over your words for a moment before nodding. âI will try to guide him, like the others. If he wants me to.â
A small relieved smile paints your face. âThank you, Soâlek.â You only get five steps before looking back at him. âBe safe out there.â You can feel his eyes watch you walk around the corner. Not digging, just settled.
___
Youâre sitting with Riânela in front of you, trying your hardest to help her add more accessories into her hair. âYouâll have to forgive me, Riânela, Iâm still not the greatest at braiding.â
She waves off your comment. âI donât mind. It feels nice to have someone else do my hair.â She pauses, thinking. âWould you let me braid your hair? As practice? Like we did when I was smaller?â
You smile, pinching her ear lightly. âI would like that very much. Let me finish with you first, though.â She melted in happiness, relaxing as your fingers continued to pull sections of hair into braids, adding anything she handed to you. Your hands run gently over her hair, checking that nothing will come loose too soon. âAlright, pretty girl, youâre all done.â
She reaches for the mirror youâd brought over so she could see what youâd done. âKeke, itâs so pretty.â Softly smiling in appreciation, âThank you. Now, your turn.â Riânela might not be a forceful person by nature, but she still had very strong hands that were quick to maneuver you in front of her.Â
She had barely taken the leather wrapping out of your hair before Priya came bounding over. âHey, sorry to interrupt but do you got a sec? The holotableâs on the fritz again and you know it the best.â A small huff of protest comes from behind you as youâre called away before she can even start.
You reach back, patting her on the arm. âI promise Iâll let you do whatever you want with my hair in a bit ok?â She relents, handing back the wrap before going to shadow Nalin and Hajir. She was on her way to being a great healer one day. You stand, brushing off your knees. âAlright Priya, whatâd we got?â
âIâm not sure, you know I donât normally deal with fixing it. I think maybe a wire came loose inside but I didnât want to break it further by checking.â Well, she was right. The table was technically on, displaying an extremely distorted image of the Kinglor forest.
Your eyebrows pinch together as you reach out and smack the table. The image flickers, trying to focus, before dissolving further into broken pixels. âPriya, would you grab my tools from Alexâs bench? They should be right at the edge, on a crate.â Sheâs quick to go grab the tools youâd let Alex, well technically Teylan, borrow. In the meantime you crouched down, feeling along the bottom for the correct panel to open.
âHere you go.â She reaches you just as you pry the panel open, peering inside.
âThanks, Pri. Just set them there please.â Sheâs quick to set down your tools and grab one of the tablets nearby, trying to pull the info from the table to the tablet. Not much else was said as you worm your way into the small opening. Small bangs are heard from inside the table, drawing eyes to you hanging halfway out on the floor, feet kicking in the air.
A small sound of triumph echoes from the table. âWell, thereâs the problem. The laser component inside is starting to burn out.â You shimmied back from the bottom panel youâd just half crawled into. âI managed to get the power supply to compensate a bit until I can get Anqa to take me to one of the outposts Tamteyâs already taken down to look for a replacement.
âOh, youâre a life savor, thank you.â She sets the tablet down, clicking some buttons as the image on top of the table starts to come into better focus. âWhy donât we just ask Tamtey to look for the components since heâs already taking down those outposts?â
âHe needs to focus on building relations with the Aranahe, not running errands for us.â You wrap your arm around her shoulder, tugging her into a side hug. âBesides, I donât get a lot of excuses to venture that far from HQ these days. I need to stretch my legs.â
Priya glances at you suspiciously, âYou almost got eaten the other day. How much more do you need to stretch your legs?â
âPoint taken, still not asking him to do something this small when heâs so busy.â You pause for a moment, thinking. âDâya want to come with us when we go? I could finally show you what to look for and how to fix it. That way you donât have to worry if anything ever happened and Alex or I couldnât help.â
âNo, no, no. I couldnât possibly go out there in the field. Iâm better here.â She shakes free of your hold, turning to look at you. âBesides, I donât think I could be that close to Anqa right now.â
Oh? Oh. Knowing about Anqaâs full on crush was one thing, but to know it was mutual gave you so many new ways to tease. You barely manage to contain your excitement on this discovery, playing dumb. âWhat do you mean? I thought you two were close?â
Immediately Priya shifts, having said too much. âWe are, we are, itâs just.. Ok, I know you two are like super close so if I tell you, you have to keep it a secret.â You nod, dramatically crossing your heart. âI- I have a crush on Anqa. Sheâs just so cool and composed all the time. It used to be just a small one but lately itâs been getting worse. I can barely talk to her without blushing, let alone look her in the eye. I think Iâd die of attraction if I had to watch her pilot us around.â She freezes after that last sentence leaves her mouth, hands flying up to her face in horror. âOh my, please forget you heard that last part.â
This just kept getting better and better. âI promise, your secretâs safe with me.âÂ
___
It took a lot more effort to convince Anqa to take you to a defeated outpost that you wouldâve thought. Youâd cornered her during breakfast the next day. âCmon Anqa, itâs not like Iâm asking you to take me to an active site. Tamteyâs already taken out a couple in the region. Theyâre empty, no risk to either of us.â
âThere absolutely is a risk if they send more troops to reclaim their facilities. And you almost got killed like two days ago. Iâm not exactly thrilled about your willingness to jump back into potential danger.â She doesnât even stop eating, talking through mouthfuls of food.
âOk first of all, chewing with your mouth open, gross. Second of all, I am trained in all of our weapons. By Sully himself, remember? If we did run into a problem it wouldnât be hard to take care of.â
âThatâs what you said before we left last time.â She emphasizes her point, still talking through a full mouth.
âYouâre right, that was my bad not checking my gun beforehand. Lesson learned. It wouldnât happen again, you know that.â You reach over, smacking the top of her head, âSeriously, stop that. Youâre grossing me out.â
âNo, itâs not a must have. We can get by without the holo working just fine.â
âThatâs not the point. Besides, thereâs probably a lot there that we could salvage. Alex is always looking for spare parts.â She pauses mid bite, looking at you completely unamused. Time to lay it on thick. âPlease, youâd be my best friend.â
Anqa looks at you offended, âI thought I already was your best friend?â
Immediately your eyes light up, glinting with evil intentions. âNope, your little girlfriend claimed that spot yesterday.â She stares at you with a look that could kill. âWhat? I canât be best friends with your girlfriend, too? Wow Anqa, I forget how possessive you are sometimes.â
She flicks what was on her spoon at you, glaring. âWhen will you drop that already? Iâve already got Tamtey looking at me all amused, I donât need you piling on too.â
Tamtey? Now that catches your attention. What could he be so amused at? Anqa watched the cogs in your brain turn, realizing she just gave herself away. âOh my, does.. Does he know? I mean, I donât think youâre very good at hiding it but thatâs because Iâve known you for years. How did he find out?â Youâre practically on the table with how far forward youâre leaning.
Her face drops down close to her plate, pushing the rations around. âHe found a recording.â
Your brow furrows a bit, âA recording?â
Her face fully drops down onto the table, hiding in her elbow. âHe found a recording of me practicing confessing. I was mortified when he came around HQ asking about the tablet Iâd dropped. Gave myself away basically immediately.â
She didnât have to look up to guess the face of pure glee you were sporting. âYou were practicing? You should show this side of you more often, Anqa, itâs cute. Pri would definitely already be your girlfriend if you did.â
You watch her shoulder hunch up like sheâs trying to hide. âI seriously doubt that.â
Deciding to give her a break from the teasing, you reach out, patting her hand gently. âThen youâre blind my friend. Sheâs nuts for you, you just gotta bite the bullet and ask her.â She turns her head so that she can look at you. âIâm like 98% sure sheâd say yes if you went and interrupted her right now to ask.â
A deep sigh was her reply for a minute, thinking about what youâd said. âIâll get to it. Iâm just not ready to be vulnerable with her like that yet.â
A pregnant pause passes between you, âSo, about the outpost.â
âNo.â
Anqa came through in the end, dropping you off at an outpost east of HQ, down in the marshlands. Though, she was still not happy about the idea of leaving you alone to dig through various rooms. âYou get one hour, one, then Iâm coming back and dragging your big blue butt back to HQ if I have to.â
âFine, fine, go do your sweeps to make yourself feel better.â She flips you off as you jump out of the helicopter, strapped with a properly cleaned and working gun this time. Watching until her chopper leaves your sight before turning to make your way inside. A low whistle leaves you, looking at the damage done. Tamtey really knows how to hit hard, youâd give him that.
A small part of you was still unnerved at thinking of him coming to these plants alone. But who were you to argue when the evidence of what he could do was all around you. Pandora was already reclaiming her land, various buds of different flora spread throughout the facility.
You made your way room by room, pulling panels off of walls, yanking still working components free and shoving them in the satchel at your hip. Humming an old song from your childhood while you worked, looking for the replacement for Priya. You found one in the fourth room youâd torn apart.
Ripping apart a half burnt holotable, you push past melted and short circuiting wires. It was a lot harder to reach what you needed in this body, only being able to stick your arm in instead of the whole upper half of your body.
âA-ha, there you are.â Your fingers wrap around the component you needed, then biting your lower lip. âNow how am I supposed to get you out without breaking you?â You shouldâve insisted Anqa come with you or just come in your human body. Though you donât think Anqa wouldâve actually brought you if you werenât big and blue to protect yourself. Your fingers raise up to the comms on your neck, âHey Anqa, you close?â
Static greets you for a moment, âItâs only been half an hour? Done already?â
âNot quite, I found that thing I need to fix the table for Pri. Problem is Iâm too big to reach in there and get it out without breaking it.â
âOh, so now you want me to come back and be a handyman for you?â
âDonât say it like that, youâd be a handygirl.â She groans at your joke. âSeriously though, I need you to come unscrew this otherwise Iâll have to come back without my avatar.â
Silence. âFine, let me do another sweep and then Iâll touch down.â
âThanks Anqa, I really appreciate it.â A repeating of yeah yeah echoes in your ear as you turn around the room, looking for anything else you could bring back to Alex.
It took her about fifteen minutes to do a âproperâ sweep before she signaled to you that she was coming down. Another five minutes, and a whole lot of grumbling, she finally manages to yank the laser out, undamaged. âThere, now can we go?â
âThereâs still a couple rooms to check out.â She looks pointedly down at the almost overfull satchel, âSeriously like two and thatâs it. The more we can salvage here the less weâll have to go looking.â
Just as sheâs about to argue with you something cuts through the air, rotors turning. They werenât yours. You can feel Anqa staring you down. âI told you this was a bad idea.â
Sneaking out of the inner rooms, you both peak around the corner, watching amp suits get dropped off onto the landing pad below. âDo you think they saw the Samson?â
Thudding footsteps start to fan out, shouting and searching for anyone inside the perimeter. âWhat do you think?â
A sinking feeling and a deep sigh. Then an idea. âThink you can get back to the Samson unnoticed?â
Anqa glances up at you, âWhatâre you planning?â
You look down at her with a gleam in your eye. âNot everything that could explode here did. Imma light âem up, draw their attention away so you can get that bird outta here.â
She immediately shakes her head. âAre you crazy? Iâm not leaving you here to play pyromaniac! No, we are leaving. Together.â
âAnqa, Iâm 8 feet tall and blue. They wonât stop to ask questions first if they spot us together. Theyâll try and kill us both.â You grab her arm, âRemember that old field lab to the east? Further out in the wetlands? Iâll meet you there, safe and sound.â
âYou canât promise that! Like you said, youâre 8 foot tall and blue right now. I should be the one sneaking around, at least Iâd be harder to spot.â
âI canât fly the Samson when Iâm this big, Iâd crush the controls. Please, I know you donât like this but Iâm not stupid.â You take off your satchel, shoving it over her shoulder. âTake this, just so I donât accidentally damage anything.â Pushing her towards where she parked the chopper, âWhen you hear the first sign of an explosion, take off. It should distract them long enough so that you can go unnoticed.â
Finally she nods, pointing her finger in your face. âDonât make me come back for you.â She sneaks through the outpost and you keep an eye on the soldiers, making sure she got out ok. Thankfully, the amps hadnât spread out too far, giving you an opportunity to sneak back inside. Grabbing what you could, you fumble with making the parts work together, your fingers too big for the delicate work.
If you could just get that wire to stick.. âGot it!â Your voice echoes a bit, making you shrink down. Your time with the others paid off, looking down at the improvised explosive. As long as you were careful, you could get it close to the gas tank youâd seen at the perimeter when youâd first been dropped off. Better that than trying to shoot it and give away your location. The less fighting, the better chance you have to get away without notice.
Hands scrambling up the large roots to the above platform, trying to get a good look at where you saw that tank earlier. No idea how it didnât go in the initial explosion but thank goodness it didnât. Sneaking around the building, slipping on the new growth, keeping an eye out for the amps. They were far enough away that they shouldnât see when you throw your little makeshift bomb, just hear the explosion.
Deep breath, twisting the wires to make sure it activates when it lands. This better work. Itâs like watching in slow motion, arcing through the air and then BOOM. A large display of a red igniting inferno lights up, drawing attention immediately.
A chorus of âHey, what was thatâ echoed from the amps, running towards the burning wreckage. You peak back around one of the outer walls, watching Anqa fly away in the confusion. Well, one of you got away without a problem. Now you just had to sneak away, unnoticed.
You slip further along the platform, jumping down onto pipes below. âHey, whatâs that?â You press tightly down onto the pipe, hoping that the angle will hide you enough that they wonât come looking. âI thought I saw something. Someone cover me.â Shit! Do you run or hope that they wonât see you?Â
Clanking footsteps only get closer as your only option presents itself. Run. âA blue!â Voices scramble together as they rain bullets down behind you. Racing across the pipes, jumping over rails, using what you could of the ruins to hide yourself. âDonât let it escape.â The rifle dully thumps on your back as you try to lose them.Â
You could stop, get enough cover and a vantage to use it on them. But even as they closed the distance behind you, the goal was clear. Get out, get to Anqa before she determines youâre taking too long. Last thing you need is her putting herself into enemy fire without a gunman with her.
Practically throwing yourself up one of the natural walls of rock, a sharp sensation blooms across your upper arm. A flurry of curses echoes behind you once you are out of sight. You donât slow down, flying across the open field, scrambling up and over a large root. Only slowing once the outpost was a distant figure. Breath coming in short pants, checking yourself over. They clipped you, but other than that youâd be fine once your heartbeat slowed down. Continuing towards the lab one thought stuck to your mind. You absolutely couldnât tell Anqa sheâd been right, thatâd go to her head.
___
Itâs late by the time you both get back, moonlight shining over the forest. Youâre still laughing at the look on Anqaâs face when youâd rolled up to the lab, covered in mud and residual oil, soaking wet after slipping off of a giant root once youâd seen the Samson. âIâm serious, itâs like you have a death wish or something.â
âI am happy to report I am alive and thriving, thank you very much. I think Iâve just used up all my luck.â She reaches over and smacks you hard on your thigh.
âIâm not taking you out for at least a week. Iâm tired of almost dying when weâre together.â
âThat has nothing to do with us. This world is beauty and danger wrapped up together. Especially for us, who werenât designed for this world.â She gives you a flat look. âYou know what I mean. Humans. Just cause Iâve got an avatar doesnât change the fact Iâm human.â
The bickering back and forth doesnât stop, distracting you both from your surroundings. âYou are late.â Soâlek is standing in front of the airlock, watching.
Eyebrows damn near shoot up into your hairline, shocked to see him this late. âSoâlek? I thought you wouldâve already headed back to your camp?â
âI was waiting.â You feel a small spark of electricity flow down your spine at his tone. Thatâs new.
Youâre quick to mask the fluster fluttering around your belly, turning to teasing instead. âAw, I didnât know you cared so much about us.â
âIt is more dangerous every day.â His eyes sweep over your frame, focusing briefly on the small scrape on your arm. âYou have a talent for attracting danger.âÂ
Well that was rude. âI most certainly do not!â
Soâlek still has that carefully crafted neutral look about him, though there isnât tension brewing underneath it, not reacting to your defensive tone. âYou put yourself at risk for the sake of others. It is definitely a talent.â
This was the most relaxed youâd seen Soâlek since meeting him. It was somewhat off putting to say the least. âWell, as you can see,â gesturing between Anqa and yourself, âWe are perfectly safe.â
âYes.â
Anqa quietly watches the exchange, connecting dots you both would deny. âSo, Soâlek. Not going back to camp tonight?âÂ
That breaks the spell, shoulders stiffening again, body language closed off and neutral. âI am.â With one last, almost nonexistent glance back at you, he turns calling Ăley.
âWhat the hell was that?â Anqa is pushing softly against your hip.
You donât look at her, still watching where Soâlek had been just a second ago. âI donât know what youâre talking about.â
âYouâre kidding, right? That little exchange with you and Soâlek just now. You guys were like lost in one another. I donât think he even noticed I was here until I spoke up.â
That draws your attention back to her. âHa ha, very funny.â
âIâm being serious. He wouldnât take his eyes off of you.â
âAnqa!â Deep breath, forced relaxing of the shoulders. âThere is nothing between Soâlek and I, I can guarantee you that. We barely know each other.â
She is not convinced, squinting at you. âHow often does he stay here this late, hmm? Never. And that whole âI was waiting.ââ Doing a very bad imitation of his voice. âHeâs never done that before. Not for any of us.â She waits for her words to sink in.
Ear fold down, tail between your legs tickling the skin around your knee. You know exactly how this looks to other people. Itâs what youâd tried avoiding, misunderstandings. âHeâs been opening up to us lately, thatâs all.â
âHeâs been opening up to you. You can keep living with your head buried in the sand if you want. Iâm going to keep using my eyes.â She doesnât wait for you, walking through the airlock. The hiss of pressurized air mixing with your thoughts.
Your nose twitches, smelling yourself. âUgh, I need a bath.â
___
Soft scraping and metal shifting against itself echoed in the quiet of the morning. Most everyone else was still asleep ignoring the call of duties. You, however, had had trouble sleeping and figured might as well get a head start on fixing the holo. Fingers fumble as they reach out, feeling blindly for your flathead screwdriver.Â
A voice startles you, causing your head to slam up into the inner ceiling. âWhyâre you working on this so early?â You groaned internally, it was too early for this.
âPriya asked for help in fixing the image projection.â Your fingers finally clasp onto what you needed, continuing your work.
âThat didnât answer my question.âÂ
âAlma, does it really matter how early in the day I start?â
A short shuffling of feet is heard before a foot taps lightly at your ankle. âJust leave it for now, youâre going to wake everyone.â You try ignoring her, continuing to tighten the screws holding the new laser in place. âIâm serious, I need to talk to you.â Two more twists and the job was done anyway.
âAbout what exactly? Iâm not really in the mood for an argument if thatâs why youâre here.â She shuffles out of the way as you crawl back out into full view.
âYou know what, Iâm worried about them. Tamteyâs been gone for days, Teylan only leaves HQ if someone forces him too, and Riânela and Nor keep disappearing for hours to explore the surrounding forest. Doesnât any of this bother you?â
You drop your screwdriver in the tool kit, rolling and tying it back up tight. âI donât see the issue, they all have their own paths as individuals and as Sarentu. They have to find it themselves. You didnât expect theyâd stay here all day every day, did you?â Your knees crack loudly in the quiet of the morning as you push yourself up. âTheyâre not those same children you found all those years ago.â
Alma has a look of frustration painted across her entire being; tight shoulders, a pinched brow and mouth, itâd be funny if it wasnât Alma. âI donât understand how youâre ok with all this? They just woke up, itâs their first time really being in this world. I mean, Tamteyâs off running around doing who knows what while facing the RDA alone! He could get hurt or worse and you want me to what, back off?â
Exasperation fills you, âThey arenât children anymore Alma! You canât keep treating them like they donât know what theyâre doing.â You point to the three young adults huddled in the corner, forming a sort of sleep pile amongst various beanbags. âThey donât need us to guide them, they need us to support them. Support them as they grow and learn the ways of the people, of their ancestors. This, what youâre doing right now, will do nothing but keep pushing them away.â
Her gaze sharpens, âAnd what about you then, huh? Iâve seen how youâve been acting with them since we rescued them.â Her finger raises, jabbing you in the sternum. âYet I donât see any change in you either, still acting the same way you did in TAP. Like an older sister just trying to do better by the younger ones. News flash, youâre not their family.â
Your blood starts to boil, ears rushing with the sound. âI am only doing as they ask. If they wanted absolutely nothing to do with me, Iâd accept that. Iâm not the one forcing a dynamic here. You wanted to play mom so bad to those kids, well guess what?â You lean in close, voice lowering. âYouâre not Grace and they arenât your kids.â
That seemed to hit a nerve, her eyes flashed with barely concealed anger and hurt. âYou donât know what youâre talking about.â
âDonât I?â A small step back, âI was with you guys for six years before the war. Before TAP was abandoned for self preservation. I remember exactly how you treated them. The word you wanted so desperately for them to call you.â You feel yourself steady, anger melting away into truth. âI remember the first day they called me sister. The look on your face when Tamtey said it in front of you for the first time. You were gutted that they accepted me as a family figure after not even knowing them for a year. Fighting for them.â
A deep slow breath tried to interrupt you but you were too far gone, your finger already pointed. âHow many times did you help keep them connected to their roots? You didnât hardly allow them outside, to eat anything other than that gray RDA rationed sludge, speak anything other than English.â
She was starting to get defensive of past actions, âThose werenât my rules.â
âNo, but you followed them. You were scared of Mercer, itâs why you didnât push when he was cruel. Just came in after he was done beating them, breaking their spirit. Helping them lick wounds you also inflicted through silence, obedience.â Your gaze levels, âThatâs not the actions of a mother. Itâs the actions of a coward.â
Silence settles uncomfortably between you both, interrupted by the sounds of life waking of the day. âThis conversation isnât done.â
âI think it is.â Youâre fast to walk away, anger still flaring inside. How dare she go pointing the finger at you when her list of sins is twice as long. You were by no means perfect, especially not back then, but youâd tried. Every opportunity to give them the sense of being naâvi was used wisely, no matter how many beating youâd get in response from Mercer or Harding. You both may consider those kids a part of your family, but you were not the same. Not by a long shot.
Neither of you notice flicking ears no longer buried in warm sleep.
___
âI donât think Iâve ever seen the image so clearly! How did you manage this?â Priya was basically jumping with glee around the control center, pulling up image after image on the holotable.
âIt helps that the RDA has much better equipment than us. So we get an upgrade and they get blown up. Win-win situation.â
âI doubt theyâd consider that a win-win.â Anqa pipes up from her tablet, planning another routine patrol.
Your shoulders raise in a dramatic shrug, âEh, itâs the RDA so I donât really care how they view it. As long as their pollution capitals keep getting turned into smoke signals Iâm happy.â
âYou can say that again. Thanks to Tamtey the pollution levels have dropped significantly over the last few weeks compared to the months we were working on it before.â She pulls up a meter detailing the pollution in the entire region. âWeâve already seen a twenty percent decrease in pollution and a significant increase in local flora and fauna numbers.â
âYou hear that Anqa? Thereâs been an increase in flowers.â You whine when she throws a cup at your head, nailing you dead on. Priya glances between you both, wondering what you were getting at.
âI have allergies.â Credit given where itâs due, she composed herself quickly, reaching over and stealing your cup.
âTo what? Pretty things?âÂ
âAnqa, I donât remember you mentioning an allergy before.â Priya cuts in, watching as Anqaâs cool persona fades, choking on her water.
âIââ Coughs take place of stuttered explanations. âYeah, itâs um.â
Amusement is painted on every inch of your being. âTheyâre seasonal, arenât they Anqa?â
âYeah, yeah, seasonal. So gotta be careful of pollen levels and flowers.â
âOh you poor dear. Does Hajir make something to help? Or does nothing work? I donât remember the last time I saw proper allergy medication.â Eyes drill into the side of your head as you try not to laugh.
A small crackle pulls your attention. âKeke, can you hear me?â Your hand raises to your ear, pressing on the radio there.Â
âTamtey? Is everything ok?â
A laugh answers you back. âIâm fine. Wonderful, actually! Everything worked out with the Aranahe, they agreed to join us in the fight against the RDA. I wanted to let you know I was coming back to HQ. Iâve got a surprise to show you.â
___
Sharp thudding on the roof, followed by a loud screech interrupts your conversation with the med team on what herbs they need your help to collect in the next couple of days. Hajir jumps nearly a foot in the air. Nalin behind him at her desk almost throws her cup of water into the monitor in front of her. âWhat the hell was that?â
You simply looked at the ceiling, suspicion growing as you thought about earlier. âI think I know.â You turn and race out the door, climbing extremely uncoordinatedly up onto the roof. There stood Tamtey, patting the neck of an ikran. âHope I didnât ruin your surprise.â
He turns to you, smiling ear to ear. âNo, makes it easier since I didnât have to go looking for you.â You glance over the beautiful creature, colors mixing and popping in a way only this world could make. âThis is Temek, my bonded.â Tamteyâs chest puffs up a bit after introducing his ikran, extremely proud of the creature and all theyâd accomplished in such a short time.
âSheâs beautiful, Tamtey. You match each other well.â That was the truth, you could see the unwavering loyalty for one another in their eyes. The same fighting spirit reflecting their mirrored souls.
âSheâs amazing. I can take you for a ride if you want?â There was a faint buzzing still radiating off of him, still living off of the high from helping the Aranahe and gaining new allies.
A soft smile pulls at your lips. âMaybe another time. Alma wants to talk to you.â Itâs like watching a spell break in front of your eyes. His tail drops, eyes losing their sparkle as he remembers the main reason he came back so soon.
âRight, another time.â Your heart squeezes at the sight, watching him make his way off the roof and in through the main airlock.
A large head suddenly enters your peripheral, making you tense without thinking. Why was Temek staring at you? Whether she thinks you're food or not is not something you wanted to find out. You take slow, shuffled steps towards the central platform, trying not to piss off the overgrown bird. To your horror, she shuffles with you, staying in sight but just out of reach.
Fear mixes with exasperation, âWhat do you want from me? Your rider went inside. Go stretch your wings or something, get a drink, find a lover; just leave me alone.â She responds with a rumbling coo, still way too close for comfort.Â
âShe trusts you.â Of course he would come by just as you were being followed by Tamteyâs ikran. Following the sound of his voice, your eyes meet Soâlekâs, coated in barely concealed amusement.
âSheâs not mine, why would she trust me?â
âTamtey trusts you, she felt it through the bond. She knows you would not cause her or her rider harm.â That makes you pause. Tamtey trusts you so wholly that it passed into his ikran and now itâs what? Stalking you with trust? Soâlek watches, quietly as he always does. Slowly, he walks over to where youâre cornered by the bird, grabbing your arm and pulling you away from sharp teeth hidden behind beady trusting eyes.Â
Soâlek watches you watch the creature, observing how Temek had turned her head when you were pulled away. âDo not look in her eye. She may not find you as a threat right now but she will see that as a challenge.â Youâd never looked away from something so fast, eyes whipping to look over his shoulder instead at the tree HQ was built around.
âThis is the closest Iâve been to one in a long time.â A thought pops into your head. âSheâs smaller than the ones Iâve seen before too.â
Soâlek hums, having let go of you finally, stepping back. âThere are larger ikran in other parts. Though smaller, they are no less loyal.â
A smile pulls at your mouth, âGood.â
Temek finally seems to lose interest, lifting off towards the falls behind HQ. Soâlek is still watching you, poorly fighting another curious pull. âYou never made the bond?â
You shake your head, eyes locked onto where Temek had disappeared out of view. âNo. Some others did, avatar drivers, but I didnât.â
âWhy?â
You finally look back at him, a curious look in your eyes. âYou seem awfully interested in my life before coming here all of a sudden.âÂ
He doesnât shy away at your tone, instead leaning into it. âIt has grabbed my interest.â
âWhy?â Why now? Youâve known Soâlek for months now, why the sudden interest? Why you? Why not one of the others?
He takes a moment to answer, still looking in you, not at you. For what exactly though, youâre not sure. âYou do not carry certain ideas with you. It is refreshing.â You know exactly who heâs referring to.
A sighing hum, âJake Sully offered to teach those who had avatars the way of the Omatikaya. Some took him up on the offer but I couldnât. I could see how the villagers looked at drivers who still used their human body, had human ideas. It didnât seem right to delude myself that Iâd be a part of their clan when I wouldnât live fully like them. Iâm not naâvi, Soâlek, I know that and I wonât pretend otherwise.â
He looks like he is about to say something, to comment on your point of view. The heavy sound of closer growing wings draws both of your attention. This wasnât one of your own and it certainly wasnât one of the Aranahe.
A proud warrior greets you, exuding leadership and confidence; beauty and fierceness. âThis is not the warrior I was told about.â
Soâlek shifts away from you immediately, greeting her properly. âNo, they are inside. Talking with the resistanceâs leader.â He turns to introduce her. âNesim, Oloâeykte of the Zeswa.â
You are quick to greet her, hand raising to your forehead and dropping back down. She hums, eye meeting yours. âWho is this, dreamwalker?â
Thereâs no point in waiting for Soâlek to answer, she was talking to you. âAn ally, if your clan will have us.â
Nesim smiles at that, amused. "You have not proven your worth, shown your colors. We will discuss an alliance with those who have.â
Your eyes harden at her slight accusation, chin lifting in defiance. âMy colors are bright enough as they are, I just merely seek to share them with friends.âÂ
She laughs at your quip back. âIt is easier to boast than to show. Tell me dreamwalker, which side did you show your colors to?â
That was meant to hurt, to pull a reaction. âWhatever you are suggesting is incorrect.â
Nesim just watches you, a cool mask of indifference painted across her face. âIs that so?â
You step forward, brushing off Soâlekâs hand attempting to pull you back, maintaining eye contact. âI can assure you when the time comes, you will see exactly what I think of those plaguing this world.â
Neither back down, a silent conversation passing between you. A beat passes, then another before you take a step back and force tension out of your voice. âNow is not the time for me to prove myself, the warrior you seek will meet you out front.â You send a sharp nod to her, walking past Soâlek to enter through the back entrance again.
âShe is amusing.â Soâlek doesnât respond. He watches where you jumped from the roof for another moment before guiding Nesim to the main entrance where they will meet Tamtey.
___
Tamtey was quick to answer the Zeswaâs call in the upper plains, leaving with a short goodbye. Nesim on the other hand had fun bothering you before she left to join her clan again. âYou are a warrior?â
You look up from the holotable, having unlinked in the meantime. âIn certain ways.â
She mulls your half answer for a moment, âExplain.â
âI donât live life thinking like one. I was trained, can hold and use many different weapons, and have fought many times to protect this world. But fighting is not something I enjoy jumping into.â Youâre quick to lower your gaze again, checking on the reports Priya had loaded into the table earlier.
At that, Nesim smiles at you. âAh, finally, the words of a warrior.â She had decided to crouch down, watching you flick through various images to avoid her gaze. âNo warrior is grateful for fighting and most do not enjoy it.â She poked you when you didnât look at her, âBut they are fierce, protective, and loyal. They stand tall and answer when the call comes.â
You finally look at her, âI can guarantee, if the Zeswa call, the resistance will answer.â
That seems to satisfy her more than you would have thought, âWe will meet again, little warrior. I look forward to seeing your colors.â
She is not slow to leave, carrying a grace about her that was fit for her role as Oloâeykte. Outside, Soâlek is resting in the sun, eyes closed and thinking. Things were finally coming together, clans were starting to unite to fight the RDA.
Nesimâs exit disrupts the small moment of peace, turning to him as her ikran joins her. âIf we call, I expect her to be there.â Soâlek doesnât respond.
___
âYou know, I almost forgot Alma even has a human body.â
Youâre sitting with Priya, Anqa, and Daniela, listening to them gossip, trying desperately to not let your headache get any worse. Youâd completely let time get away from you the last couple of days and the effects finally caught up to you.
âRight, Iâm surprised she even kept her human body since no one hardly sees it.â Daniela was one of the biggest gossips in the whole western frontier. It shocked you the first time sheâd saddled up with you and the other girls, spewing the raunchiest gossip about a secret couple.
âDâya think she ever like âgot it onâ? Local or human? Oh, which body dâya think sheâd use?â
Your stomach twists not wanting to picture anything like that. âThatâs disgusting Dani.â
âItâs natural, everyone gets lonely over time.â She turns her attention to you. âSpeaking of lonely, whatâs up with you and Mr. Broody, huh?â
You groaned, âOh, not you too.â She just wiggles her eyebrows waiting. âNothing is âgoing onâ, heâs just finally opening up to others past Alex.â
Anqa pipes up from her pile of pillows. âHe doesnât talk to me unless he has to.â
âWhat are you guys talking about? He talks to me just fine.â
âThatâs cause no one in their right mind could hate you, Pri. Youâre too lovable.âÂ
She smacks you softly with a pillow. âStop it! Youâre going to make me blush.â
âSeriously, heâs been looking at you differently lately.â She glances up, then looks at you pointedly, âHeâs looking again now.â Your head whips around, finding no one in the corner he normally occupies. Dani leans into your shoulder. âYou sure thereâs nothing going on?â
âThere definitely is, sheâs just blind to attention given to her.âÂ
You yank a pillow out from under Anqa, smacking her repeatedly. âThere is nothing going on between Soâlek and I. Weâre finally becoming friends, canât you just let it be?â
She grabs the pillow, pulling on it. âI will when you admit it.â
You look at get, getting a mischievous glint in your eye. âI will if you will.â
âOh? Is there someone youâre âfriendsâ with Anqa?â Dani looks between you with a growing smile. Anqa is quick to let go of the pillow you both still clutched, sending you falling backwards off the pile of bean bags.
âNo, there isnât.â Sheâs too busy glaring at you and reassuring Dani thereâs nothing going on in her love life, that she misses completely the look Priya has on her face. You, however, take full note of it.
âI was just teasing, no need to get so serious.â You pull yourself back onto the bags, losing energy half way up. âAnqaâs flying completely solo in that sense.â This time, Dani and you catch the flash of relief that shoots across Priyaâs face and shoulders, sinking further down into the bean bags.Â
âNothing going on with you either Priya? You arenât feeling lonely at all?â Dani was quick to turn the attention to your local bubbly friend.
âI, uh, no.â Her cheeks darken significantly, refusing to make eye contact.
âDamn, all of you need to get on the ball. Billyâs the newest one here, why not give him a shot?âÂ
âWhen did this turn into you teasing us about our singleness? I really donât want to hear you brag about your man.â She just smiles in response.
âOh, believe me, youâd know if I was bragging about my man.â
The conversation finally turns from the lack of relationships between the three of you. âHey, how come the new kids donât call you by your name? What did they call you again? Kiki?â
You sign as the attention turns back to you, âItâs Keke. And I donât know, one of them suddenly called me that about six months after joining them at TAP. I didnât fight it.â
âIt means sister right? Interesting they call you that but Alma, who raised them for longer, only gets called her name.â
Shoulders shrug, uncomfortable with the change in topic. âSheâs not their mother, no matter how much she wants to be.â
âStill she raised them for like ten years, right? Iâm just surprised there isnât a deeper connection between them.â
You had no clue, by the time youâd been assigned to help teach at TAP, the kids had been with Alma for eleven years. It was clear that they didnât have a closer connection beyond a teacher, a mentor. âTheir relationships started before my time on this world, but it was clear Alma wanted to be more to them than what they thought.â
âWho was the first one?â Priya speaks up again, the extra color finally gone from her cheeks.
âTamtey. He grabbed my hand one night after I had snuck in some fruit from outside the complex. We were in the corner, huddled and peeling the skin off to try before bed time and he just grabbed my hand and called me âTsmukeâ. The others followed over the next couple of weeks and I just never corrected them.â You shift looking between the three pairs of eyes fixated on you. âFigured it wasnât really my decision what they wanted to call me. Though you shouldâve seen the look on Almaâs face the first time they called me that in front of her.â
âIâm sure itâs similar to the look she gets when they call you that lately.â Anqa says amusedly, Dani snickering in response.
âYou guys see that?â You groan, rubbing your eyes in annoyance. Of course theyâve seen her passive aggressive behavior.
âSeriously? Weâd have to have the eyes of a mole rat to not notice something like that.â Priya pipes up, teasing you.
Dani just smiles at you, âShe gets this sour look on her face when sheâs in ear shot of you and the kids. Itâs actually quite funny.â
Your mind starts to wander as they continue joking about various things, including your leader. Speak of the devil and she will come. Alma walks down the stairs, turning to the control center. You just sit there, watching her as she flips through reports sent over by Norm in place of Jake. Sheâd been stressed at the lack of contact with him, that had been obvious. But the general anxiety that was gathered in her posture had to be more than that. It was like she just couldnât relax, no matter how many advantages you gained on the RDA.
You watch as she stiffens a bit, raising her hand to her comms, listening. âWhat? But you- youâre safe, right?â Her body was ridged with worry. âTheyâre our allies. Of course, weâll be there.â She drops her hand down, looking around at the various eyes on her, leader mode activated. âThe Zeswa are calling for us to join them in battle. Gather your things, we leave in ten.â
A chaotic scramble erupts, people grabbing and handing out weapons, changing into gear Raj had prepared for moments like this.
âAlma, what happened?â She ignores you for a moment, gathering things together. âAlma, what did Harding do?â
âThey killed a Zakru, the TsahĂŹk of the Zeswa is calling on us.â She turns to you, âGo to the link bed, the both of us will be better suited in our avatars.â
You nod and turn, practically racing upstairs. If the Zeswa were calling for war, the resistance would answer their call.
