Envisioning a digital scholarship incubator
As all projects do, this one began with a vision...
But first a little background:
At the Claremont Colleges Library, we are developing new ways and spaces to support digital scholarship on our campus. The library serves five liberal arts undergraduate colleges, including Pomona, Scripps, Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, and Pitzer, as well as two graduate colleges: Claremont Graduate University and Keck Graduate Institute. Over the past year, the library has become a hub for digital humanities and digital scholarship activities. With a generous grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, we began with a spring symposium last February, launched a six-week Intro to DH short course for faculty and graduate students, and a week-long summer institute for faculty to learn more about DH concepts, methodologies, and tools. The library is now looking to redesign some of its spaces to support continued learning, teaching, and exploration.
During the 2015-2016 academic year, we have embarked on a project to reimagine and renovate our existing GIS Lab and transform it into a “Digital Tool Shed.”
Our goal is to create a vibrant, open, accessible, technology-rich, inviting space for the Claremont Colleges community to extend faculty and student knowledge and collaborative experience with digital research tools. The Digital Tool Shed will be an incubator for innovative digital research, teaching, and learning – a space for exploration, practice, engagement, and experiential learning. It is services-oriented space, in which experts in various technology and digital scholarship will provide expertise to assist users in digital project planning and execution. As a flexible space, it offers students and faculty a place to build cross-functional and intercollegiate teams for innovative research and to design new tools for scholarship in the humanities and beyond.
