Planting a zucchini #seed.

For a seedling gnomeschooling project, try this.

Title: Monocot or dicot?

Supplies to gather: corn seed or unpopped popcorn and a dried bean or two

A jar

A paper towel

Intro & Info:  Seeds come in two forms, a monocot which means one side, and a dicot that means two sides. "Cot" means cup! A monocot will grow one cotylydon or first leaf, and a dicot will grow two. Let's observe how the first leaves, true leaves, and roots grow differently in these kinds of seeds.

To do: Soak your seeds overnight or for a few hours. Wrap a damp paper towel on the inside of the jar. Between the paper towel and the glass, tuck your seeds. Keep them moist as they grow. Draw in a nature journal if you like the changes each day. 

Questions:

What grows first, the roots or the leaves? How is the corn different from the bean? Can you see the two sides of the bean? Does the corn seed come in one piece or two?
