It's the anniversary of Columbine, and as someone who moved here soon after it happened and knows survivors of the incident, I want to clarify a few things.

The two leading claims about the perpetrators' reasoning is that they were either severely bullied or that they were evil white boy fascists who wanted to kill people. Both are kinda true and not true at the same time. They were bullied, yes, but they had friends; they were not loners. And in turn, they bullied others and used racist slurs. They were drawn to violent fascist ideologies.

They spared people who were their friends, but also killed innocent students they didn't know. It wasn't a "revenge on the bullies" situation. The killings were brutal and changed the lives of everyone who was there that day. It changed the psyche of my entire state, especially us students who grew up knowing we could be the next Columbine.

Over 20 years later, we still haven't changed what must be changed. We have not implemented necessary gun control. We have not cracked down on the spread of fascism and racism. We have not implemented ways to rehabilitate those who fall for violent ideologies. And all those anti-bullying programs forced on us honestly did shit to stop bullying.

There will be more Columbines as long as we decline to act. Demand change.
