every dollar spent on a dinosaur inflatable costume or a dildo or a joker mask or a rainbow tutu or a lightsaber specifically purchased to be used as Quirky Props at protest would’ve done 100000000% more good just being sent as a donation to ur local community shelters like i said this the other day u ppl are declawed in a way thats just. girl idk. idk actually idk.
I agree that we need be mindful of where our dollars should go.
But, I think sometimes we forget the way something starts, what the intentions are and the whole story gets a little twisted.
When the inflatables etc came on to the scene, it started in Portland OR when Trump was propagandanizing that Portland was like a war zone, and needed the national guard to come in and quell the supposed lawlessness. The idea of the frog inflatables, tutus, bubbles, whimsy and joy was to show the absurdity of the claim and to make the militarized police look ridiculous.
This is a protest resistance tactic, that has worked in dictatorships in Europe. Tactical Frivolity, has been used since medieval times, successfully and last year everyone seemed to get it. But I am seeing more and more posts decrying it as people not taking things seriously.
The fact is when a cop sprays pepper spray in the air intake of a fucking frog suit is there any question who the aggressor is? And that frog, by the way, got himself sorted and was back that night.
Minneapolis has used many tactics, including the absurd, and no one, No. One. Can say the people of that city in the dead of a Minnesota Winter were not taking their resistance seriously.
Sure, you can not be a fan, perhaps you think Tactical Frivolity is not for this moment or worked in Portland in that moment but its not working now - but twisting the intent of them and the people who employ their use is unfair and frankly dishonest.
“they’re wearing the suits and costumes to show whimsy!!! and to not be seen as a threat!!! u just hate fun and joy!!” can i ask you a question, do you know how many black and brown children under the age of 10 are murdered everyday by the police force in america? follow up question do you know the extremely racist anti black history of portland that may be a reason that these specific forms of protest are popular there among the majority white population?

We're inside all the time and most things we experience are scheduled ahead of time. When there are sidewalks, we follow them, and there's always some boring place to go. You need things that no one has any control over and that no one can sell for money. You need to be outside in a storm and see lightning strike very close to you. You need to meet a wild creature and have to stand very still and almost not even breathe and watch before it vanishes. You need to be alone somewhere very big. You need to go to a place because it looks interesting and be at the wrong place at the wrong time. You need to climb over a fence instead of going in by the gate. You need to hear the exploding sound of a huge flock of birds flying. You need to watch live theater performed by kids on a low budget. You need to be lost somewhere. You need to be barefoot somewhere. You need to sing with other people who are singing. You need to get soaking wet with all of your clothes on and come inside shivering.
it’s time to make a decision
people who tell you to stop reading the news to "regulate your nervous system" do not have your best interests at heart. if following current events makes you spiral you probably need a better analytical frame, not less information
and the analytical frame you need is probably dialectical materialism
i'm totally crazy, i freak out all the time, but you know what helps me most? learning. reading. studying. discussing. sometimes you do need a nap, but sometimes you need a conversation with someone more knowledgeable/experienced, or a day at the (physical or digital) library. and really i think everyone has a different baseline emotional register that's best for them and their circumstances, but i recommend aiming to feel solid and anchored, not necessarily "calm." of course we won't feel "calm" after reading about genocide. but if we approach what we're reading correctly, it can strengthen our resolve; feed our fighting spirit; show us paths to liberation. a lot of people in my life have diagnosed me with "revolutionary optimism" and wonder how i maintain that mindset but i'm not an optimist by nature, it all comes from studying
