For Dean, home is the memory of a freshly painted house with a white picket fence. It’s film that’s sticky, dogeared, and faded from frequent handling in reminiscence, or hearing the hum of a familiar melody ghosting the hallway at the end of the day. Home is an idea he revisits when he’s lying on his bed in the bunker, an arm tucked behind his head and the other over his stomach, and he’s on top of the sheets rather than under because he’s already got one foot out the door. He doesn’t know if he’ll ever really feel deserving of the privilege of home.
He’d taken the liberty of leaving his dent in the bunker. Posh and pristine like the past Men of Letters wasn’t his style. After spending most of his life in dingy motel rooms and living in the front row of seats in baby, the bunker had been a more permanent option. He could have his own bed, his own TV and radio, his own stash of food—his own space—but in the quiet of the night, when even the loudest of music tracks couldn’t drown out the blood rushing in his ears, the uneasiness in the pit of his stomach had never settled.
He doesn’t even have that much time to dwell on it anyway. You can’t belong in one place if you’re already needing to move to another. Cases come one after another, and if he’s lucky, he gets a weekend in between. Some shut-eye, a chance to get caffeinated, and then he’s hauling his duffel bag into the backseat of the Impala for a week across the country. He stops feeling the need for personalizing the space as the weeks bleed into months. Personal projects won’t mean the end of the world; negligence will. If the essentials are there where he expects them to be, that’s all he needs to ask for.
Then there’s you.
He doesn’t notice it for a long while. It sneaks up on him, like a gravitational pull that slowly built up over time until it was almost as natural as breathing. Then, one quiet morning, it all comes together. The state souvenir mug with a chip on the rim sitting on a shelf in the bunker kitchen. The ball point pen with dying ink leaning against the spine of a book saved for another day. The spare hoodie in the backseat of Baby, never worn but ever present for every stakeout, just in case. The wired earbuds banished to the glove box after a knot you never quite figured out how to untangle. There’s pieces of you everywhere. Evidence of your life. Not necessarily all pretty, but every single bit of it sacred.
He never finds it in him to move your things. He lingers, calloused fingers tracing rough edges and corners, memorizing wrinkles and folds. Then the natural order of your belongings resumes, only briefly touched by his undeserving hands. He’s fortunate enough to live with these small revelations, and bit by bit, day after day, something warm soothes over the ache in his chest until he forgets that it was ever there.
A second mug joins yours on slow, early mornings—his own, a gag gift from a tourist trap you’d spotted on the road once. When your pen stops working on most strokes, there’s a pack tucked away in a drawer across the library. Your hoodie stays in the back of the car, folded and ready even though you always choose to have a pillow over an extra layer of warmth. The earbuds live with the rotation of tapes he keeps for drives.
Home becomes the process of give and take, a silent, mutual exchange over the course of time. Glass shards that fit like puzzle pieces despite their edges and reflect the routines you've built for yourself time after time, a mural telling of love and life that thrived against all odds.
Sam had learned very early on that home was a luxury hunters never had. Not even Stanford had been a home, not really, because he’d returned back to the life eventually. He and Dean made the most of downright decrepit motels because that’s what was cheap and unsuspecting. Sometimes they slept in Baby, settling after rock, paper, scissors for who took which seats. The only thing ever promised to him was that he was always going to be running for something, and the mentality had followed him all the way up to the discovery of the bunker.
There was no rush to decorate or claim. His room was just a repurposed box and, like every square inch of this secret base, was a treasure trove of history of lives past and forgotten. No different than mysterious inns with quirky features and flashy stories. He had a bed to sleep in, a desk to work at, and the privacy of four walls and a door separating him from Dean’s snoring. What more could he ask for? It was only a matter of time before this was taken away from him too. Maybe it would all burn down, or maybe one day he’d never come back to pick things up again.
Home is a distant idea, a vague image like a memory burned into the back of his mind but obscured by cruel reminders and unsaid doubts. He can't bring himself to believe in his chances of obtaining it.
But, against all odds, you defy that way of living without so much as uttering a single word.
There's no grand announcement, no big and loud disagreement. You just slip through the cracks, like green growing in between cracks in concrete, and he doesn't even realize it until the warmth licks at wounds he’d long since accepted were there but never expected to heal—not without scars. The revelation lives somewhere in his ribcage like it’s always been there. Quiet. Gentle. A thought that passes his mind as you drape your jacket next to his on the back of a chair.
It’s all he sees after that. A wad of beat up sticky notes you put down on his desk one day and seemed to forget were there. The charm that was more decorative than useful in warding against magic or curses because you got a kick out of a “haunted” antique store you passed once. A pair of fuzzy socks that somehow ended up in his drawer and not yours. The bowl with a chip in the rim that you insisted on keeping strictly for cereal on days you needed an extra pep in your step.
All of these were pieces to a puzzle that just fell into place as naturally as breathing, and Sam then takes his time to really live in those moments. His stationery sits right next to yours, ready for late night research and idle scribbling. The charm joins a collection of other trinkets on a shelf by the bed, the first thing he sees when he wakes and the last thing he sees before he sleeps. The socks sit up on top of the mountain of others, ready for you when the nights get cold and hiding under the covers isn’t enough. He sips on his smoothies for a little longer so he has more time with you in the kitchen, drinking in the sight of you enjoying your breakfast like he won’t be there for anything else.
The routines you’ve created for yourselves receive a new breath of life. The hunts remain relentless, and recovering from the injuries take longer, but the seconds between get sweeter because for once? Sam has a purpose—a dream to survive for: creating and living in his own version of home with you.

you're so sweet to think of us, sam might not be one for double dates (especially with dean baha) but i think it's super adorable! valentines day is certainly my favourite time of year and although sam is a romantic, he's a major homebody, so i had to put on my instigator-hat and provoke a conversation about going out, opting out of a thoughtful orchestrated movie night and having some fun...
this led to long hours getting ready, makeup and fragrances all over the table and my heart-littered valentine's pajamas being a staple for most of the day! sammie would check in on me and supervise the overall progress every so often (all with that same look and smitten smile), but he was tasked with making the reservation and getting his suit tailored for dinner! (he's not exactly a petite guy, his suits never truly fit just right!)
now, every holiday evokes some super lovey-dovey, domestic antics for sam... so all morning and even into the late afternoon, i expected him to take my hand and center me for a sweet, short waltz in the hallway... flowers in hand and handwritten card with a subsection titled "things i want for you" with all his wishes for my future, such as comfortability, laughter, and enrichment (which he gives me in tenfold!). ໒꒰ྀིっ˕ -｡꒱ྀི১
every christmas, every birthday! not one special occasion slips by without a hand on the back and a chin laid on top of my head with sam... who knew he associated romance with a slow dance? ૮꒰ྀི◜༝◝ ꒱ྀིა

by the time i'll be posting this, it'll likely be merry christmas eve so i'd like to wish you a merry christmas eve, my luv!! i enjoyed lowkey just rambling about this so it's really just my thoughts laid out there and not a proper scenario for each brother; hope my takes aren't controversial, oops~

i know we joke that dean can be so easy, but the man does love a good thrill. there aren't many ways to have fun, not with hunting, so he'll take what he can get. he is not above being messy. after all, he'e not exactly known for being the most orderly person.
that said, i think he's so down to carry lip prints like they're trophies. he might think twice—it's more of an initial texture thing because lip gloss is . . . well . . . sticky—but a few beers down the hatch and a pair of pretty eyes staring at him and he won't even think twice about it.
by the end of it, he'll have the biggest grin on his face. he might have glitter smeared at the corner of his lips, down his cheek and his neck, but he's emerging triumphant with his ego soaring through the roof.
does he have any idea how to clean it off his skin and clothes? no, but that's a problem for future him.
it's not like sam wouldn't enjoy the intimacy of a claim like that, but he's definitely a little more reserved about it. he's in for some teasing if he gets caught with the evidence ( because dean is just soo mature ) but i have a feeling he'd enjoy it more for the actual experience.
he'd get tingly all over feeling pillowy lips cling to his skin, and for a second, he forgets that the gloss will be a problem to wash off later. desire has always been a pesky thing, and in that moment it tangles with shame—shame because he really enjoys how the gloss makes your lips linger just a moment too long before you're moving to the next spot. every lip print is a tattoo of you, and that's what's dangerous about it.
so yeah, maybe he'll be a little shy about it. but when he's face to face with the evidence in the mirror? he's red in the ears but there's no hiding the smile behind a hand running over his stubble.
notes: remember that one episode in season 12, where it opens up with dean having spent valentine's being mr. right now and not mr. right? sam being flabbergasted by the hickey on his neck he's just blatantly bearing? yeah, case in point.
