Jesus Answers a Question About Fasting

In today’s red letter post, the disciples of John the Baptist question Jesus about fasting. I have linked a sermon by John MacArthur which covers today’s verses, as well as links from a Bible commentary site. Both resources explain these verses better than I can at the moment; I would much rather leave the explanations to a Bible scholar of John MacArthur’s caliber.

Jesus Calls Sinners to Repentance

Today’s red letter post highlights not only Matthew’s call to follow Jesus, but also Jesus clearly declaring WHY He came into the world.

I’ve seen so many people twist the passage in which Jesus ate with tax collectors and sinners, as if to justify their belief that Jesus “forgives all”. The Pharisees viewed Jesus’ association with tax collectors and sinners with self-righteous disgust. To clarify, Jesus never condoned the sin of those with whom He sat. His response to the Pharisees was simply that He sat with those who needed Him the most. Jesus did not join them in their sin. He sat with them to call them to repentance.

The self-righteous believe that their presence at Sunday mass is what makes them good people. That they’re doing “enough” to get into heaven. That because everyone sees them in worship and prayer, they’re automatically saved. I’ve often said that, when the rapture happens, there will be crowded churches and empty prisons. Going to and being seen in church is not an indication of salvation. Christianity is more than that. True Christians are the first to admit that they’re unworthy of God’s grace, that they are NOT good people on their own. True Christians know they’re sinners in need of Jesus as their Savior, and that they had no part in their salvation. True Christianity is being in a direct relationship with our triune God, followed by a permanent lifestyle change, made possible by the willingness to be Spirit-filled and Spirit-led. True Christianity is acknowledging the need for our great Physician and Shepherd because we are sick without Him, and lost without His guidance.

Jesus' Power Over Demons

In today’s red letter post, we focus on a single word from the mouth of Jesus - “Go.”

He was speaking to a legion of demons who took possession of two men. The demons knew that Jesus was about to cast them out, and they begged Him to allow them to take possession of a herd of pigs. He simply said, “Go.” The possessed herd then ran down the hill and died in the sea.

The powers of darkness are no match for the sovereign power of our Lord. Satan knows it. His legions of demons know it. The battle between God and His adversary has been ongoing since the time of creation, and it will continue until s returns and defeats all evil with an almighty, final blow.

Regardless of your belief in Jesus or lack thereof, whether you praise or mock Him, whether you obey or disobey Him, whether you know Him or not, whether He knows you or not, whether you stand with or against Him, there’s only one thing you’ll ever have to remember:

God wins in the end.

Jesus Calms the Winds and the Sea

In today’s red letter verse, Jesus speaks amid a violent storm during which He and the apostles are traveling by boat to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, away from the growing crowds following Him.

The overall message is a reminder to trust in Jesus for protection and salvation. Our triune God has sovereign command of everything in the universe, regardless of its size. He oversees the flow of nature. He holds the planets, stars, suns, galaxies in place with His sovereign power. Everything is precisely where it should be in order for the flow of nature to happen. He can calm storms. He can open up wombs to bear children or close them. He can bring about famine or abundant food. He can breathe life into someone who has already died, and he holds the breath of everyone alive today in His mighty hand. Those who don’t have faith or trust in our Savior face things far worse than a storm - namely an eternity spent without His holy attributes. The love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control that exists in this world exists because of our triune God. When He is absent, so too are all of His attributes. Folks who mock and deny Him don’t understand the fact that His presence is what prevents evil from fully taking over. It will happen during the tribulation, as prophesied by the apostle John in Revelation. Fear, which is indicative of a lack of faith, is a sin. Trust in Jesus and you’ll have nothing to fear, both in this life and in the eternal one.

The Cost of Discipleship

In our red letter post today, Jesus encounters two men who declare they want to follow Him. Jesus responds, explaining the cost of discipleship, saying that following Him wouldn’t be comfortable or easy. Unlike the animals, Jesus didn’t have a place to call “home”, and that would be true of anyone who followed Him. The second man placed personal, secular {worldly} obligations above following Jesus, to which Jesus responded by saying that the spiritually dead would bury their own; following Jesus was far more important - a higher calling for the advancement of His eternal kingdom.

Following Jesus Christ comes at a great cost. It requires us to trade our free will for His will, in complete humble obedience. We must put our total trust in Him, not fearing anything or questioning His purpose for us. We must say the hard things to other people in rebuke and warning. We must preach the gospel, and endure persecution as a result. We must put God above all else, including family, money, material possessions, and anything else we might idolize. We must be willing to endure the discomfort our faith brings, keeping in mind that our eternal reward - being in the presence of our triune God - is a gift from our Father, made possible by His ultimate sacrifice for our sins.

What Keeps Men from Christ?

Today’s red letter post continues through Matthew 8, focusing on the faith of a centurion asking Jesus to heal his servant.

The centurion believed in Jesus’ power to heal by a verbal declaration, and Jesus responded that He had not found such faith in Israel. He went on to say that many Gentiles would inherit God’s kingdom, while many Israelites would not. It confirms that background - religious or cultural - is not important when it comes to salvation…but faith in Jesus as Lord and Savior is. Jesus declared the centurion’s servant healed, and he was healed in the same hour.

Jesus Heals a Leper

Today’s red letter post features one of Jesus’ many miracles of healing, which gave a man his life back.

Lepers were forced to live in isolation, unable to live a normal life. They were shunned by society, left to suffer alone because they were considered unclean. The man showed humility and faith in Jesus’ power to heal, and in response, Jesus showed compassion and did what nobody else would do - He touched the man, which immediately healed him.

This passage serves as a reminder of the blessings we receive as a result of humility, faith, repentance, and obedience. The Lord knows what’s in our heart, and He responds by either blessing or chastening.

The House Built on the Rock > Sand

Today’s red letter post concludes the Sermon on the Mount and focuses on the difference between strong and weak faith, and the presence or absence of obedience of God’s Word.

Jesus compared strong faith and obedience to a house built on a solid foundation. The storm refers to spiritual attacks. If we believe in Jesus and obey Him, He keeps us safe. Conversely, the house built on sand represents weak or no faith and no obedience, and cannot endure the storms/attacks. We are told that we must not only be hearers of the Word, but also doers. We must read Scripture AND apply it to daily life. Merely reading Scripture, without the intention of obeying, is a waste of time…and it’s a sin {knowing the gospel but denying it is the unforgivable sin}.

But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does. - James 1:22-25

I pray that you enjoyed our posts on the Sermon on the Mount. It is the greatest sermon ever given in the history of mankind because it was given by our Lord, and because it is a direct message from God about how we MUST live. The Sermon is not filled with suggestions, nor is it subject to opinion or debate. It’s what God expects from us if we’re to inherit His eternal kingdom.

Today’s red letter post, from the Sermon on the Mount, features the most terrifying words Jesus will ever say to unrepentant unbelievers. Sadly, so many aren’t aware that they’re headed down a path that ends with those words. In the sermon “Empty Words” {linked below}, Pastor John MacArthur brings up an excellent point that I would like to expand upon. Pastor MacArthur said:

“I can’t ever say to someone, ‘Well now, boy, I know you’re saved and don’t you ever doubt it and don’t you ever ask again. It’s all settled and it’s done because you said the little formula.’ If I do that I give them a psychological assurance of something I don’t even know is true.”

What I would like to add to that is this: many people - my husband included - have been falsely told that all they have to do is “accept Jesus as Lord and Savior”, and that declaring it is “enough”. It’s not. Salvation is not a single statement, followed by a sinner’s prayer. Salvation is not found in any man-made religion. It’s a changed heart that leads to a changed lifestyle. It’s bowing down in humility, faith, repentance, and obedience, and spending time in God’s Word. It’s a willingness to be led by the Holy Spirit, and be open to His conviction and discernment. It’s a willingness to deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow Jesus, regardless of what it costs you. Further, no man has the knowledge or authority to declare {with assurance} another’s salvation. It’s a dangerous practice that leads to false assurance. If anyone who reads this has been told this, don’t believe it. Read the Bible, cover to cover. Rely only on the Lord for your assurance of salvation. Please listen to the linked sermons. Today’s red letter post contains a warning from Jesus about false prophets and their bad fruits.

False prophets are everywhere, but if we don’t know Scripture, we cannot recognize them. The thing about false prophets is that they mix in a bit of truth with their false doctrines. How they conduct themselves in their personal lives matters. If a pastor preaches the gospel in church, but engages in sinful behavior outside the church, he’s not bearing good fruits. When we have the Holy Spirit indwelling, we can rely on Him to translate Scripture and give us the discernment we need to recognize good and bad fruit.

Do you know what the good fruits are? Galatians 5:22-23 lists them - love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. In the “resource” section, I’ve included links to John MacArthur’s sermons explaining them in detail.

Today’s red letter post features the verse that inspired the name of this blog site.

The wide gate is easy to find; the narrow gate isn’t. The wide gate is easy to navigate; the narrow gate isn’t. The wide gate is deceptive. It “appears” to lead to a nice place…but once people get there, they experience regret for ignoring the warnings, because there’s no escaping it. Satan’s promises are empty. Why wouldn’t they be? He is the father of lies. The path to destruction is wide because the people on it think they’re headed to a huge party where there are no rules. Sadly, those people won’t realize they’ve been deceived until it’s too late.

To pass through the narrow gate, we’re required to leave everything “worldly” behind - including our “old” selves. There’s simply no room for it. John MacArthur, in one of his sermons, compared it to a turnstile, like the ones we see in train stations. Only one person at a time can pass through, without the baggage they’re carrying. The journey is too difficult to carry anything “extra” because our focus is on following Jesus. We don’t want or need our worldly things because greater rewards await us in the Father’s kingdom. There’s no deception. The Lord keeps His promises. For believers, eternity in the presence of Jesus is the ultimate reward. It becomes our focus as soon as we attain salvation. We don’t mind the difficult journey because of what Jesus endured during His ministry, and in the days leading up to His crucifixion. He endured those things for us so that we could live. The Lord is absolute truth, and that’s all we need to know to place our trust in Him. He tells us that we must deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Him…and that He is the only way to the Father. That’s what we need to do and what we need to believe to pass through the narrow gate.

So which path are you on? Narrow or wide? You only have until your last breath to be humble, open your ears to hear, have faith, repent, and obey.

As we move on through Chapter 7, the last part of the Sermon on the mount, we come to another widely misunderstood verse - “ask, and it will be given to you”.

This does not mean that we will automatically get what we pray for just because we ask. The Lord does answer every prayer, but not every answer is a “yes”. His “no” is still a blessing, and His “not right now” requires patience. Every one of His answers must be met with gratitude. “Seek, and you will find” refers to seeking Him; we will always find Him when we seek Him. “Knock, and it will be opened to you” is most likely about persistence in prayer, that aligns with His will. When we ask for something for our good, He will not give us anything that isn’t useful to us.

Finally, Jesus says, “whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets”. Treat others the way you want to be treated, even those who don’t treat you well. Jesus exemplified what He commands in this verse. He washed Judas’ feet during the Last Supper. He asked His Father to forgive the men who reviled Him as they crucified Him. If we want to spend eternity in our Lord’s presence, we MUST emulate Him and strive to be worthy of the sacrifice He made for us when He washed our sins away with His precious blood.

Today’s red letter post begins Matthew 7, the final part of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount.

Matthew 7:1 is one of the most widely misunderstood, misused verses in Scripture. People use it to avoid being called out for their sin. What Jesus meant was people should not judge as though they are the Lord. We should never assume anything based on outward appearances - such as who is going to heaven or hell. Nobody knows the heart except for the Lord. Nobody has the authority to judge the eternity of another person. That’s between the person and the Lord. Rebuking sin is not the same as judging. We’re commanded to correct others but it’s strictly a warning or reminder of the consequences of sin. The assertion “only God can judge me” is not a flex; if a person stands before the Lord in judgment, unrepentant and unbelieving, what follows is eternal separation from Him. So, it’s better to be WARNED while there’s still breath in our lungs.

Verse 6 talks about trying to reach those who are openly hostile, hard-hearted. We should absolutely plant the seeds of the gospel, but refrain from doing so when we know or anticipate push-back or hostility.

And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. “Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you in pieces.” - Matthew 7:1-6

Today’s red letter post from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount concludes Chapter 6, and the focus is on what Jesus said about worrying.

Worrying is a sin because it’s indicative of a lack of trust in the Lord. It’s difficult to not worry these days because the fear-mongering is rampant. We’re constantly urged by survivalist YouTubers to “stock up” because of potential threats to our food supply. Don’t listen to these people. They don’t care about anything except the commissions they’re making on sponsored sales.

We shouldn’t worry about food, drink or clothing because God provides for us…but only IF we trust in Him.

“Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? “So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Our red letter post today, from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, focuses on divided loyalties.

There are only two choices when it comes to where our loyalties lie - the Lord and “the world”. Worldly things encompass everything that replaces the Lord as an idol. The Lord is top priority. We cannot put Him at the bottom of our earthly priorities and still expect to spend eternity in His presence. It’s up to each of us to decide what’s most important - our relationship with the Lord OR money, power, status, material possessions, worldly traditions, religion, fame, etc.

Remember, you can’t take the worldly things with you when your time on earth is over. They’re only temporary. The Lord is eternal.

In today’s red letter post, from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, Jesus talked about the lamp of the body - the eye.

What do your eyes focus on every day? Are you mindful of where you place your attention? What we absorb - our spiritual diet - is far more important than our physical diet. The food we eat nourishes our bodies, but the body, like the world, is only temporary. When we focus on worldly things, such as sin, money, material possessions, culture, we absorb darkness, and allow it to live in our heart. God cannot exist in a heart that’s filled with darkness because He is light and truth. God’s indwelling Spirit leaves no room for darkness to take up residency in the heart of a believer.

This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. - 1 John 1:5

So it does matter what we focus on, and what we choose to glorify - God {light} or the world {darkness}.

Jesus tells us that we must not place value on the material things and rewards of this world because they are corrupt and don’t last forever. Only the treasures and rewards that await God’s elect in heaven are eternal. Further, whichever rewards we choose to value illustrates where our hearts are. If we only care about the rewards of this world, then the world becomes our idol. If we look forward to the heavenly rewards bestowed upon us by God, and we’re willing to give up potential earthly rewards, then our heart belongs to God, which is a glorious reward in itself.
