Heh. Pin keeps looking at the clock in this chapter.
It really seems like it’s ending soon. Nice group picture
(Akagami no Shirayuki-hime) 【Chapter Translation】 Akizuki Sorata - Chapter 81
They dirtied their hands for him, thinking they had no other choice…
150 notes took forever. xD As promised, here is Chapter 81!
Welp. This was a pretty heavy info-dump chapter too, but it dealt more damage to my kokoro than any of the recent chapters. The last chapter to have affected me so emotionally was the crowning ceremony one, but this is for a different reason entirely.
[I’m not sure how you guys usually read my translations, but PLEASE read this along with the raws. The presentation for this chapter is GOOD.]
I think it’s been a while since the topic of assassination or murder came up in this series. The last time it occurred was the arc with Atri, and with the tone of this manga it’s often easy to forget that they are living in the medieval times where to kill or be killed is a common thing.
I’ve stated in my rant for Chapter 80 on Twitter that the twins are pretty much victims as well. But I never expected it to be like this. T_T
Also, cliffhanger. @_@
Japanese Raws HERE. Chinese Scans NOT ONLINE.
A single slash ‘/’ sign means that the dialogue is from another bubble that is joint with the previous one. Double slashes ‘//’ refer to dialogues that are from bubbles completely detached from the previous one. The brackets ‘()’ are for the small text that floats around the bubbles or the characters, or their thoughts. The asterisk ‘*’ refers to an action done by the character. ‘[]’ basically refers to my comments.

Thanks so much for the translation. I hope Zen is able to make them his allies. Li-ren in Hanasakeru Seishounen once told Prince Rumaty that one of the feats of a great leader is turning his enemies into his allies by gaining their allegiance.

Kazehaya and Sawako from chapter 114. I will scan and post the entire chapter next week.
i will protect her when you can’t - obi, zen and why it simply cannot be a love triangle
Shoujo manga. An addiction for some, a guilty pleasure for others, but most of the time a headache inducing mess of questionable writing filled with unnecessary misunderstandings and impossibly big eyes. And yet we keep on reading and reading them, perhaps hoping they’ll get better, or maybe just hoping to find the one gem that’ll make all the suffering worth it.
Akagami no Shirayukihime was that gem for me. I read the whole thing while very sick and just so bored, and then I read it again, and by then I was so enamored with all its characters and the lovely art, the slow but not too slow pacing, that it just became an instant fave, on par with shoujo manga I’ve adored since I was a teenager. This series is such a good example of how sometimes you don’t need to tell a story full of plot twists to keep the reader captivated, but you can just let your characters be, show them living their everyday life - just let them be the very heart of the story, and then your readers will never want to leave.
But of course, every rose has its thorn, right? So trust me, when Obi showed up I was fully prepared to be subjected to an awful love triangle that would ruin an otherwise beautiful series (I am looking at you, Chihayafuru) and suffer as I watched the fandom crash and burn over the eternal question, “who will the girl end up with?” But somehow, Akagami no Shirayukihime managed to avoid that too. You won’t find any of the usual fights between the two guys and dramatic declarations of “I won’t let you have her”, nor will any of the characters be jealous to the point of wanting to monopolize the girl’s attention. What you will find, instead, is a healthy relationship filled with nothing but respect and mutual support, and a trio in which the so called “underdog” isn’t left out at all. Zen, Shirayuki and Obi all love and respect each other so much that it’s absolutely unthinkable for a love triangle to develop between them - and this post is an attempt at explaining why.
(warning: VERY long and image heavy post under the cut!)

Excellent post. You’ve just explained “one” of the most solid reasons why I love this manga. I haven't read over a hundred shoujo manga but I’ve read enough to notice the trend of inescapable love triangles that can many times ruin my budding affection for a story particularly as it begins to go the inevitable route of consuming the plot.
Akagami no Shirayukihime is truly a gem for me. It is one of a few shoujo manga that I can take seriously because the mangaka has earned my respect by the way she has developed the story, characters and their relationships without all the unnecessary juvenile drama that plague many shoujo manga. Not only the Zen-Shirayuki-Obi relationship but the way she developed Raji and Shirayuki’s relationship was truly wonderful to read. Indeed, all the relationships are developed nicely. The one which endeared me the most though is Izana and Zen’s relationship which I find complicated and well done. And that's saying something because I genuinely love all the main relationships.
Has Pin realized?
I can’t imagine that Pin does not suspect Ayane. Some of his glances and gazes in the chapter give me the impression that he does know. Lulz. Ayane also behaving all flustered and blushing is a dead giveaway. Pin would have to be blind and deaf not to suspect her feelings toward him. The last two pages also kind of give the impression that he’s contemplating her behavior or their encounter.

I wish I could see Ayane happy one day. She’s making me teary eyed in the last few pages especially.
