A Love Letter To YHS: Ten Year Anniversary
Originally I had something bigger planned for this date, but time had other plans for me. However I wouldn't be able to stomach it if I just let this day pass by me without doing anything to celebrate.
So I'm gonna do what I'm best at, yapping. This will be very corny, but your childhood series doesn't turn ten everyday, so I'm willing to sound like I was born on the cob for this.
On September 17, 2015 the first episode of YHS was released on YouTube. And with that the course of my life changed. I can't remember how old I was when I first watched YHS, probably around 10 or 11. But I do still remember where I was. My mom's phone was charging on the kitchen counter, and I was standing upright in order to reach it. I was scrolling on YouTube looking for whatever brain rot content I consumed back then. Then I stumbled across “Yandere High School - Presents For My Secret Santa! Christmas Mall! [S2:Ep. 20 Minecraft Roleplay.] It all went downhill from there.
I know starting from that episode doesn't make me a true "original" fan. But I don't believe you have to be there since day one to truly be a fan of something.
From there on I became absolutely enamoured with the show. It was all I talked about, and I know for sure people grew fed up with me because of it. But I can't say I regret trying to force it on people, just that I never succeed.
I remember there was a huge gap between when the episodes of YHS dropped. During the Zombie Run Arc of Season 2, I would pester everyone nonstop about how much I wanted the next episode. It was all I talked about for months, heck, I even included it in my prayers. Then Episode 45 dropped, and for once I was quiet. I remember having this huge grin on my face, and vividly saying “I'm happy now. I don't need to ask anymore.”
Then the next episode never came.
And suddenly I was back to square one again. I wasted so many birthday wishes on a new episode that never came to be. I've long accepted that the series is never coming back, but as a kid it was hard to accept the thing that I had made my whole personality, was gone.
I was in my last year of elementary school when the last episode aired, I am now a high school graduate. I've gone through many things since then. With that I learned that it's better to be happy it happened, than be sad it's over. I still find it hard to believe I'm older than all my favorites sometimes. I like to think I graduated for them when they couldn't.
As cheesy as it is, I'm glad to have gone through YHS as a kid. It made me who I am, some may say it's bad, but I would argue otherwise. I'm probably never going to feel this way about a show ever again. It's a core part of my childhood.
The community of this fandom is like no other I've ever seen. To build a castle out of crumbs is talent. Which is why I'm so comfortable making such a corny post, because I know there probably is someone in this fandom who cares about this show as much as I do. Heck, many may be more passionate than me.
I haven't done much for the fandom ecosystem, but the little I give is always appreciated by someone. From my brief stunt in YHS Gacha content in 2020, to the shitty fan art I post now. I'm always seen, and that makes my heart feel a little warmer.
I can't say this show was a diamond in the rough. It was an absolute dumpster fire, but trash on fire is still fire. This show had flaws, way too many, but also its golden moments. Every piece of fan content was woven from dust.
I love that stupid Minecraft Roleplay, and I always will. Thank you Yandere High School for all the good moments.
