OKAY SO THIS MAY SOUND CRAZY BUT HEAR ME OUT.

THE BLUE SPIRIT:

followed aang all the way across the world and was always where aang was, at one point even rescuing him from zhao’s fortress

went to lake laogai to free appa at the same time that the gaang fought the dai li there

has the general height and build of a teenage boy

never uses bending, but instead fights with swords

wears a blue mask

now before you call me crazy, who followed aang around the world, would have a personal stake in finding appa, is a teenage boy who doesn’t bend, knows how to use swords, and has a connection to the color blue??? that’s right—the evidence has been right under our noses the whole time: the blue spirit is obviously sokka.

I love this moment. it’s quite small in the scheme of things, but it’s so telling. katara has grabbed sokka’s club from him and charged ahead, cracking open the iceberg in which aang is trapped out of sheer strength and will. katara is unafraid to face this decidedly supernatural entity. sokka stays behind, encouraging katara to do the same, because he is cautious, if not scared (and reasonably so). katara dismisses him, and takes the initiative to face the unknown. but, she is using one of sokka’s tools to do so. katara is the proactive one, brave, fearless to the point of naïveté. but it is only because of the environment sokka built around her, built for her, that she feels emboldened to be so daring and heroic. her courage could not exist without his caution.
