Perhaps one of the more infamous demons is none other than Baphomet, who has become the official mascot of the Church of Satan and is today considered representative of both Theistic and LaVeyan Satanism alike.

Baphomet is a demon belonging to an unknown hierarchy, but his name first appeared in July 1098, in a letter by the French crusader Anselm of Ribemont. Baphomet may not be the demon’s true name; historians and scholars agree that it is a corruption of the Islam prophet Muhammad’s name, adopted by the Knights Templar as a mockery of the Islamic religion. The Knights Templar worshipped Baphomet, who was famously drawn by Eliphas Levi in 1854, and has been a staple of the occult ever since.

The true identity of Baphomet may be that of the Egyptian demon Banebdjedet, due to certain similarities, and therein may lie its origin.
