TWIN PEAKS | 2.18 — “On the Wings of Love” (1991)
No but seriously imagine it:
You’re seeing bob dylan on a concert. Everyone is having a great time. Bob dylan seem a little excited. “We have a surprise for you guys.” Bob says. All of a sudden Billy Joel come out and start singing “vienna.” When Billy gets to the chorus, someone else starts singing… “I get up in the evenin’ And I ain’t got nothin’ to say I come home in the mornin’ I go to bed feelin’ the same way.” Lights flash everywhere, and you see Bob singing “vienna” along with Billy, while Bruce is singing “Dancing in the dark”. Everyone in the crowd is going wild and crying. Then if things couldn’t get any better, Simon and Garfunkel walk onto stage and kiss, holding the gay flag.
its so fucked up that optical discs straight up rot though right? something about digital media just feels like it shouldnt be susceptible like that to the forces that govern the physical world and yet discs rot as if theyre an organic thing
This also happens with digital data due to the degradation of the physical storage medias! This book (best before by james newman) talks a lot about it in the context of videogames and the the implications it has for the ongoing efforts to archive them!
We talked a lot about this in library school, too. Digital media formats only “last” as long as we can read them–videotapes being a fairly recent example. Okay, you can transfer VHS to DVD or rip it to a purely digital form, but what if your father was a strict Betamax adherent? All my childhood memories are recorded in a format that can only be read by increasingly esoteric technology.
And questions of access extend beyond that. If I inherit a stack of pictures from my grandparents, then I may or may not know who’s in the pictures, but I have the pictures. If I inherit their cloud storage, then I hope I also inherited their password, and that it wasn’t changed between the time they wrote it down and when they died. Otherwise those photos are technically extant but lost, like frozen ghosts in the machine.

kids these days with their favorite character as their lockscreens… when I was a youth you had to carefully arrange all your favorite anime pictures on a word document and print it out to carefully slip inside the plastic sleeve of your three ring binder
