It still surprised Montparnasse how confident Courfeyrac was in general. Be it in his daughterâs recovery chances, or in general around other people. It was definitely something he thought was good about the guy. âYou donât owe me anything. I really donât need anything anyway. You knowâŠyou can just count this as the compensation if you guys feel thatâs necessary. Personally, I would prefer not to bring any further attention to my involvement.â
"She does. Surprisingly. I never thought I could feel that attached to another person. Let alone one who canât even really communicate with me yet." Montparnasse didnât know why he was telling him this. It wasnât like Courfeyrac was really interested in what he had to say. "Youâre right about that. I donât really want her associated with that sort of thing. But it is the only way I know to make money. Iâll have to work on that."
Montparnasseâs eyes widened and for a moment a guilty look came across his face, and he avoided Courfeyracâs gaze. âIâm sorry about that. What I didâŠwas incredibly stupid. IâŠon occasion do some stupid things when people upset me. That doesnât excuse anything of course, but itâs done and I canât change what happened. But I am truly sorry about Prouvaire, and that he had to leave.â
He didnât understand why Courfeyrac was even offering any kindness as a meal or anything. Montparnasse wouldâve accepted a cold silence while he waited for Combeferreâs verdict. It probably wouldâve made more sense to him. âYou really donât have to cook anything. Oh. Her nameâs Nicolette. Nicky, for short. She certainly makes life more interesting.â
Courfeyrac rolled his eyes. "Fine. The debt has been paid. I will no longer besmirch your bad name with tales of your good deeds. But we are grateful, know that."
"Kids have a way of doing that. Obviously, I don't have any of my own, but my three younger sisters, they're great. I'd do anything for them." He grinned. "You might have to get an actual job. That's an interesting thought. You gonna wait tables? Maybe sort books at the library?"
"Thank you." Courfeyrac said stiffly. "Um, I'm not going to tell you that it's ok, or all is forgiven, but...thank you for apologizing. I, er...I miss him."
Courfeyrac wasn't entirely sure why he was being nice to Montparnasse, but he didn't like seeing people upset. "Nicolette. I like it. It's pretty. Suits her. And I'm sure she does. Babies are a handful."
