It's a lot like the tradeoff of Figher vs. guarding cats comes down to individual playstyle. On the other hand, boomerang cats are REALLY GOOD, so being within 5-10% of really good is still quite good, and perfectly playable. So if you're speedrunning, this probably isn't the build for you. This is why I think boomerang cats are probably still better, overall. And because the build relies so much on stacking explosion modifiers, you can't just swap to an elemental weapon yourself without losing some efficiency. They're decent against pretty much everything not named Teostra or Brachydios, but they can't keep up with a boomerang cat with a targeted elemental weapon. It does good damage, but in almost every case, if you pick a weapon with an element that the target is weak to, you'll do more damage. 170 melee/160 ranged damage, blue sharpness, and 26/15 blast status. Sorry.īecause you're playing something unconventional, people online will occasionally assume you're either trolling or incompetent, even if you totally just carried them for the last three missions.Īshen Whiskers is a fantastic general-purpose cat weapon. Yes, this probably means you'll be scouting and leveling up yet another cat. The skill and type requirements are fairly different from boomerang cats.

I seriously recommend spending some time practicing a bit offline or with friends before you start playing online, just so you don't end up flailing around ineffectually in a room full of strangers. They also have a slight edge in damage, since it’s easier to keep the dps flowing as ranged weapons spend less time chasing monsters around the map. It's close! It gives roughly the same dps, but it requires you to work harder, play better and make fewer mistakes. This is not as good as the standard boomerang cat build. (Ashen Whiskers, a popular end-game general weapon.) It does around 10% less damage than a fighter boomerang cat using an elemental weapon targeting the monster's weakness. Specifically, I'm claiming this: This build gives "roughly" equivalent damage to a boomerang cat who is also using the same weapon.

There’s a lot of information I wanted to cover, and it was hard to figure out what to cut! A lot of the end bit is math, so feel free to skip that if you're just looking for "how to build and play" advice. Sorry in advance for the length of this thing. But it brings roughly the same damage to the table, so once you get used to it git gud you can bring it on hunts and not feel like you're forcing innocent strangers to carry your nonsense build. This takes a fairly specific build, and is not quite as flexible as the boomerang build. I'm pretty happy with the results! (Basically, I've been doing a lot of theory crafting, and tweaking things until my clear time with bomb-cat builds is within 10 seconds of my clear time with a boomerang cat.) (And I like the idea of bomb damage that scales off your attack!) And melee attacks, since that is ALSO fairly unexplored. So I've been messing around with bomb cats, since they seem relatively unexplored. I can't remember the last time I was legitimately worried about losing a fight with one.) But there are a lot of options for prowlers, and surely there must be some other ways to combine them into a viable build, besides stacking boomerang buffs? (sometimes I honestly worry they're TOO good. Don't get me wrong - boomerangs are great fun, and are really really good. So I've been working on finding new ways to play prowlers.
