So, @the-flightoficarus had a need for AUs of Bucky telling Tony about his parents before Steve did, and it had me writing a small thing.
I know Steve found out about this, and I assume he has already told you. But I couldn’t let it be without letting you know how sorry I am…
The letter fell from slack hands, drifting to the ground, the eyes that had been reading it now unseeing, staring at the distance.
The hands began to tremble, before suddenly clenching into hard fists. How… How dared he? How dared he keep this from him, this truth that he had all rights to know as soon as it came to light?
Tony scoffed, remembering Steve’s scathing words after the Ultron incident. Sometimes my teammates don’t tell me things. Pot, kettle, Tony thought, and wondered if it had even passed Steve’s mind at the time, the secret he himself had clutched so posessivly to his chest and refused to share.
Tony had been made to feel so ashamed for his actions and decisions back then, even when it didn’t seem useful at all at the time to have shared every stage of his and Bruce’s discoveries to a team that wouldn’t understand heads nor tails of their theories anyway. He had been yelled at, looked at with derision, choked out for his “secret keeping”.
And now here was the truth. All this time, Steve had kept something bigger from him while that hypocrite had dared to berate Tony from not laying out every detail of his research.
Well, Tony supposed, as he picked up the letter and read the last lines again, a secret for a secret is only fair.
I would do anything if it meant I could change what happened, what I’ve done to you. You know how to find me should you want to. I won’t stop you if you wanted to avenge them. Don’t tell Steve.
Tony smiles hollowly as he lets the letter be disintegrated by the repulsor in his palm. He can’t wait to meet the man Steve would throw him under the bus for in a heartbeat.
Neither can he wait to take away from him.
