I know more often than not when we think what ruined fandoms we think that it got "normalized" or that the common everyday person (people who don't write/type up essays/stories about their favorite characters just for the fun of it and nothing more) found these spaces and injected themselves in it and in a way or two that isn't incorrect. But I always felt like fandom spaces were welcoming, they were open to people, because it was through the community built in the fandom that made them so fun, it was the people and what we made of the common passion we shared in that space.
But I feel like as more and more trickled in, obviously the bigger it all got, and the more eyes turned to look at these spaces, especially from corporate companies. A place that was once about sharing a common interest, a passion, and brainstorming discussions, connections, became about profits and attention. Engagement became data and a means for profits and exposure. Capitalism skewed these spaces so much at a core level that it turned engagement into value that can be monetized.
The people who engage are data that gets collected to study, the more attention something gets then it can become currency, and the space itself just became a marketing tool just that easy. Getting paid doing something you love is not wrong, I'm not trying to say making a living out of something (HOPEFULLY) you like is wrong, I'm just saying that the way fandom spaces have changed is so deeply rooted in capitalism that it's impossible not to bring that up. "Content creators" making material not because they like something but because it pays them.
It's fascinating to see sometimes when I get the chance. I'm only touching about one aspect here, don't even get me started on the "consumer" side. I have seen the most outright entitled people, it baffles my mind.
Capitalism and consumerism has ruined fandom spaces/culture in a way I never thought possible but I saw coming from miles away.
Having Neuvillette with the Opera Epiclese and his melusine daughters is absolutely criminal, broken even.
Neuvillette vc: be sanctiFIED YOU STUPID LOSER.
awww its ok little guy [steps towards you with intent to harm]
I am in fUCKING DANGER AWRAXA.
I just love Furina so much. If she told me to kill myself I would do it.
My primo is in danger ahaha...
Stop memorizing my attack patterns. That's fucked up. Who let you do that.
Mother fucker. You know what? I'm entering my second phase. Have fun with the choir arrangement of my theme ass hole.
💖 she's a 10 but she always bites when she cums 💖
One of my favorite parts in Leslie's stories is the part where it basically says that people in the overworld could be out here talking shit about the fortress or how "scary" he is when he could be somewhere around there just getting himself some tea or a pastry to enjoy his tea with just minding his business. It adds this really nice casual and down to earth vibe about him that I just really vibe with. Like yes he's this "big shot" guy with influence and money, but at the end of the day to himself he really is just some dude, just some guy.
The tea is in his taste
He's here to stir more chaos and have a good time while doing so.
@eauregina: dealing with heartache woes Leslie, caught off guard but trying his best:
this. absolute. caveman!
' wriothesley release me right this instant! ' she demanded, teeth bared at the warden who so casually admitted that he apparently told lies more often than he was credited for. she tugged at her cuffed hand earlier which was not wise, it actually hurt quite a bit so she learned her lesson. this was so unbecoming, so undignified for a lady & he claimed it was for her own good? oh, she was going to-!
she shot him a glare, not something she did too often, in fact it wasn't something she did at all. why was he doing this? things were fine earlier & suddenly she was lured into something akin to a trap to keep her from getting hurt? from what? ' monsieur neuvillette & myself aren't working in tangent anymore, need i remind you. ' why bring neuvillette up? she had her path whilst he had his own now. ' h-hey wait, wriothesley don't you dare leave me here or i swear-! ' & he was gone. ' ugh! ' she huffed in frustration & slumped slightly where she sat, emotions of annoyance flaring. her exasperation with this entire situation, as she calmed, was more so because she had no idea what made him react like this & truly that was what she was most curious about.
he was out of his mind if he thought she was going to wait for him for a hour or more, for all she knew, cuffed in this place.
she turned towards the cuffs & the metal pipe to which she was stuck to because of it & took a deep breath. her emotions had the tendency of getting the best of her in moments where she felt control was slipping, so now that she was more calm & sound of mind she knew precisely what she needed to do. from every pore of her skin under the bound section of her wrist water began to travel down her arm. she tucked her hand & twisted & turned it slightly as the water continued to surge out of her flesh, the hydro in itself served as lubricant of sorts until she successfully managed & slipped her cuffed hand free. ' yes! ' she cheered even if it still managed to hurt, she was free now.
furina got up to her feet & dusted herself off to chase after where the warden had gone. she can't believe he did that to her.
Leslie is long gone, he couldn't hear her over his sense of responsibility and duty. Knowing that Furina is potentially a target at the moment has him too focused.
He's hardly dealt with the abyss, at least to a personal degree. He's heard many things about them, many stories, many encounters his connections have had with them, so it isn't like he doesn't have a good idea on what he might be walking into, but it's that lack of personal involvement with them that has him being far more careful than he usually would be. He needs to be smart about this. The duke ducks behind thick bushes distances away from the mages as they essentially float into a camp of hilichurls. He uses the shadows of the night, the cloak of darkness to his advantage, he just about blends in with it. An odd thing to witness though, how they boss them around to do their bidding. The mages are talking amongst themselves and from here he can barely catch what they're saying.
Furina... Focalors... Oceanid vessel... Deception of heaven...
The duke finds himself confused, at a loss.
He narrows his eyes at them. Clearly it's something that they know that he doesn't but it sends an unpleasant chill down his spine and he can't pinpoint on the why. Mere months ago, so he's heard, they weren't all real humans, those in Fontaine, not until recently. The trial Furina had undergone bringing so many truths to light, and her expending her divinity essentially saving them in the end. At least... that's the version he knows. But what do these abyss mages know that he doesn't then? It isn't odd or rare for the courts in the overworld to keep certain things under wraps for the sake of the public and to prevent panic, but what's this about the deception of heaven? And what does that have to do with Furina?
she is so proud
