Noémie Merlant as Marie de Régnier in Curiosa (2019) dir. Lou Jeunet
Noémie Merlant, talent brut
by Caroline Perrin - Journal des Femmes, September 19, 2016
NoĂ©mie Merlant plays Brigitte in âElles⊠Les filles du Plessisâ, directed by BĂ©nĂ©dicte Delmas and available on DVD on November 2, 2016. She is a 17-year-old pregnant teenager, tormented and challenging, hostile to any form of authority. A touching character, whoâs constantly evolving.
After training at the Cours Florent, NoĂ©mie Merlant made her debut in 2010 in Jacques Richardâs film, L'Orpheline avec en plus un bras en moins. In 2016, NoĂ©mie Merlant plays Brigitte in Elles⊠Les filles du Plessis, a rebellious teenager who doesnât like being dictated to. A gifted actress who confirms her authentic acting genius in this drama which depicts the liberation of women.
Le Journal des Femmes: Why did you accept the role of Brigitte?
NoĂ©mie Merlant: I like committed films, so I liked the script right away. And the character of Brigitte touched me because her rebellious side actually hides a lack of love and a fragility. There were many subtleties in this character and her evolution was interesting. At first, she is a very reclusive, very rebellious girl. You can see that sheâs not used to having friends. And in the end, interacting with these girls, she is transformed. Thatâs what really touched me.
How did you prepare for the role?
NoĂ©mie Merlant: The most difficult thing was preparing the âpopularâ side. In Les HĂ©ritiers, I played a city girl so I took on a certain accent and way of speaking. But I didnât know how popular girls expressed themselves in the 1970s. So BĂ©nĂ©dicte (the director) made me analyze archival images to immerse myself in the era. Apart from the dialogue, we also worked a lot on details, like the lock of hair that Brigitte often has in her eyes. In my roles, I like to look for depth and thatâs what this character allowed me to do.
The film conveys a strong message: do you consider yourself a feminist?
NoĂ©mie Merlant: I heard recently that saying feminist was pejorative.  I donât think of myself as a feminist in that sense, I just think of myself as a woman. Iâm not against any group of people, but I do like the momentum between women when we want things to improve, so from that perspective, yes, Iâm a feminist.
What was your best memory from filming?
NoĂ©mie Merlant: There were a lot of them. We were always together with all the girls. I also remember giving the finger to Sandrine Bonnaire in the film, I think that few people had the opportunity to do that. But my best memory was shooting with Sandrine. Itâs like we fell in love at first sight. Iâm very happy to have met her.
If you could choose the director of your next filmâŠ
Noémie Merlant: Sandrine. She must be brilliant as a director and it must be a real pleasure to act under her direction.
DVD release on November 2, 2016.
[Please donât repost this anywhere, in part or in whole.  Feel free to reblog, or at least cite your source and provide a link back here.  Asking permission would be nice in an ideal world, but Iâm a realist - I know far too well how easy it is to appropriate stuff on Tumblr.  I would be the first to admit that my translations are not perfect - there are some words and phrases that simply do not drop neatly into an  equivalent in English, and I constantly fix typos and make changes or corrections in older posts - but they do take a lot of work and time.  Thanks for understanding. - C.]

English translation of CĂ©line Sciammaâs screenplay for Portrait of a Lady on Fire/Portrait de la jeune fille en feu
Dear Portrait Nation:
This is an English translation of CĂ©line Sciammaâs screenplay for Portrait de la jeune fille en feu that was recently published by Plain Archive. There are a number of typos in the screenplay.  Those that appear to be on Plain Archiveâs part, such as misattribution of dialogue to the incorrect character, have been corrected.  The typos that seem to have been Sciammaâs (though really, there is no way to know for sure) have been preserved.
We have also preserved most of the punctuation as it appears in the Plain Archive screenplay. Â The result is what Grey only half-jokingly refers to as Sciammaâs tone sociopathy: in many instances where you would expect a question mark, for example, she simply uses a period.
This translation attempts to reflect Sciammaâs style of writing and doesnât alter that for the sake of clarity. Â There are sentence fragments and also what appear to be camera directions that may be her personal shorthand cues to convey the visual or emotional gist of the scene. Â
There are many places where the dialogue here deviates from the official English subtitles seen in the film. Â For the most part, these are due to translation choices that attempt to convey whatâs actually on the page: unlike the subtitles, we werenât constrained by having to compromise about what would be readable onscreen within the time allotted by the rhythms of the scenes.
The translation may be downloaded here.  This document was a true labor of love; we ask only that you not attempt to pass off the work as your own or sell it for profit.  And if an official English translation ever becomes available for sale by Céline Sciamma and Lilies Films, please support it to the best of your abilities.
A personal note: I am indebted to @tonovember for her tireless work in putting together the transcript of the Plain Archive screenplay, as well as for formatting the translation into its final form. @morningmightcomebyaccident was invaluable in proofreading my endless drafts and acted as chief critic, goad and cheerleader. @ladyonfire28 contributed greatly to the translation and saved me from making a complete ass of myself on far too many occasions. @hedawolf kindly vetted the Italian dialogue for accuracy. These brilliant women challenged me to justify my choices, flagged anything questionable for discussion or debate, and frequently came up with the perfect word or phrase that had eluded me. Any errors or inconsistencies that remain are entirely my fault. Thank you, Nov, Grey, Aimée and Vittoria: you made this immeasurably better. And thank you, Céline Sciamma, for creating this exquisite masterpiece.

Young entrepreneur needs help to be able to freelance
(This is a copy of my fundraising stament)
In 2018, I suffered a car crash that left me with a broken knee and shoulder. Health insurance only covered one month of medications and no therapy. I had to spend the money I had saved during many years working as a licensed nurse. Due to my new condition, my contract was allowed to expire. I was also studying to realize my life long dream of becoming a filmmaker, which had to also stop. In my effort to get my insurance back, I hired a lawyer that only took the little money I had left (about $1500) but never heard from him again.
I was struggling to eat and to pay rent as, at the time and since 2012, I was living alone. All of that led me to a mental breakdown that almost took my life. It took until February 2020 for me to finally be able to walk properly again and to overcome part of my deep depression and forget most of the extreme thoughts I had in my head, especially since I felt so alone since my brother died in an accident. Needless to say, it has been a couple very difficult years for me but I have high hopes for a much better future.
The situation with COVID-19 didn't help in terms of employment. A nurse with trouble walking is of no use, and still recovering for my depression but currently in good spirits. I'm getting better and I want to work. Sadly, I had to sell most of my video equipment: camera, tripodes, lenses, etc., in order to afford my therapy and costly medicine. Just living out of occasional freelance work and with the help from my parents as food and roof over my head goes.
The recovery process from this difficult time in my life was long and painful, not just in terms of physical pain due to my injuries, but also regarding my mental health, a state of despair that left me questioning why did I spend so much time, youth and money on education for the system to discard me so easily. It makes you re-evaluate life and if it's even worth living it. I won't deny it took me months to regain hope in this world and in myself, that I was able to do so much and if the healthcare system didn't want me because of an accident, I should pursue my vocation with much force, an area where I could be appreciated for my talent: both mental and physical abilities that have so much to give, especially since I'm still so young. So, I slowly began taking on small freelance work: a photo session for a baptism, a wedding coverage, restauring old pictures, edit short ad videos for social media pages; things that I could do without being moving too much, as I was still unable to walk properly. To be able to take pictures or videos I rented them, which lower the profits quite significantly but I also took it as a means to distract myself with activities I truly enjoyed. For editing, my trusty laptop was a true warrior for many years and helped me a lot. This way I was able to occupy my mind and lift my spirit that, along with constant therapy, worked wonders for my health. You can also watch some of my work here https://vimeo.com/465557068, on my twitter account mageonfire1 and on IG merlant_academy.
However, since late last year, the state of my laptop has been steadily degrading, and it will stop working soon. The freelance work I am successfully doing now is community management, copywriting, screenplay supervising, photography and video editing for small businesses in my area. But I wonât be able to do this, let alone aspire to better things: better quality media content, ad video recording, gigs at weddings or birthdays and other gatherings, once the COVID situation allows it; if I donât have the necessary tools.
The goal of my funding campaign is to be able to get the basic equipment I need to continue the business I have and to expand into the growing online media world market, not just locally, as I manage English pretty well and to be competitive in a market severely hit due to the world economic and health situation and the huge unemployment rates around the world, including my country.
I hope you found my story worthy of a donation. I will be forever grateful. Additionally, this campaign will have tier rewards as a thank you for your donation. Iâll handle requests for videos of any type (with pre-recorded video). I am also very excited to announce that the well known artist Rose De la Cruz @rosedelosvientos has been kind enough to offer commissioned aquarela paintings as rewards for a certain tier. You can see more of her work on her Instagrams page: https://instagram.com/rosedelacruzart?igshid=q9y707sn38kb
I cannot thank you enough for taking the time to read this and consider supporting me. If you personally can't donate, please spread this crowdfunding among your friends and family.
My sincere greetings and hope that you and your loved ones stay safe and secure.
Sincerely,
MageMDL.

Iâm really going to miss posting these, what a crazy ride itâs been. Iâll say it again but I never thought that commentary post I did back in February would lead to this whole list in August (and Mace either lmao).
Obviously I gotta thank Céline for being a genius and killing me every 2 minutes during that whole film commentary. And of course AdÚle, Noémie and Claire for bring brillant too.
Last but not least I really canât thank enough the wonderful @bereaving for everything that she did. That series would have never become what it is today without her. Sheâs the real MVP. đ

i know just a liiiiiitle bit of korean, Noémie is saying something like: How are you Korean audience, thank you so much for watching and loving POALOF , please recommend this film! See you soon!
plz if you know Korean/ French, i will be so happy that you correct my mistakesđ (x)
Well basically you said it all !Â
In french she said âHello to Korea, I want to thank you for coming in such large numbers to see Portrait of a Lady on Fire and to have enjoyed the film. Now do not hesitate to spread the word around you and i hope to see you soon.âÂ
NoĂ©mieâs acceptance speech :Â
âThank you to the Academy of Les LumiĂšres.Â
This film has begun for me with one gaze during the casting, a gaze that I will never forget. A kind, horizontal and intense gaze, from CĂ©line, who accompanied me from the start until now to find that role of Marianne and much more.Â
Thank you AdĂšle. I admire you so much, thank you for that dance we shared, thank you for your generosity, your strength and your freedom.Â
Thank you to all those kind gazes: Christel Baras, Bénédicte Couvreur, Claire Mathon, Luana Bajrami, Valeria Golino, and the whole team. Thank you to my manager Gregory Weill and to my parents.
This film circulates everywhere and is shared a lot, and itâs probably because it evokes something that is missing, which is the lack of our imaginary as women. I hope this movement is only the beginning. Thank you again.â

âThe double life of NoĂ©mie Merlantâ. Here is a new interview of NoĂ©mie for Madame Figaro !
DAY
First thing you do in the morning ?
I need fresh water to start my day well.
Your energy recipe ?
A lot of stretching and sometimes I take a glass of wine for the spirits.
Your day of glory ?
The night of the LumiĂšres awards. I won the Best Actress award, and that first award forced me to go on stage and do a speech while it paralyzes me.
Where where you born ?
In the 15th arrondissement of Paris, not far from where I live today.
A secret to reveal ?
Iâm the proud honor of an American Staffordshire Terrier. That dog has a very bad reputation.
Your day uniform ?
Daily, I wear large and comfy clothes. I never leave my backpack where I have my computer, a book and my knitting needles in it.
Beautiful as the day ?
I drink a lot of water and I almost never wear heels anymore because I decided to stop suffering.
A happy day ?
... is a day in the water. My best memories are linked to the sea. Maybe itâs because of my name, Merlant.
NIGHT
What does the full moon inspire in you ?
I donât know if it has an effect on me but I like to believe it does
A night to spend with ?
I would rather have a dinner with Cate Blanchett because that actress fascinates me.
Queen of the night or nightcap ?
Nightcap. I need 7 hours of sleep to feel well.
A nocturnal madness ?
A half party/half work night in Romania on the set of the film Iâm directing
What do you dream about ?
I dream of many things ! Sometimes I even visit my past and face the young girl I was before.
To spend a good night ?
I invested in a king size bed but I always end up falling asleep on the sofa in my living room.
Scared of the dark ?
My fears tend to surface during the day. For a long time Iâve suffered from anxiety attacks, so I feel better at night.
Evening dress ?
A real cotton pajamas.
The sight of your bed?
The trees on my terrace and the apartments of my neighbors. I love to look at people's homes. It reassures me.
