former lady-in-waiting to her foster sister, Kirsi, turned apprentice mage following Kirsi's marriage to the King

here in Spirale, she's become much more comfortable with not needing to hide that she's a fairy. Some days are better than others, of course, but her shawl and her illusion magic are there when she needs the extra coverage.

It helps that she's found work at her former-roommate Hawks' agency, where there's a lot of good people who have helped her find comfort in her own skin.

Anyway yeah back home fairies are essentially being hunted by people who have been led to believe that they're dangerous. It's being called a "war" when really the fairies are just trying to defend themselves from genocide.

Lucia was raised by humans, hiding who she was from literally everyone except her foster father, after her fairy fathers were murdered because of the war. Only recently with Kirsi's and Lucia's move to Kirsi's fiance's castle did she really start to learn the truth about fairies, magic, the war, and herself.

She's greatly interested in magic, wanting to learn what she's capable of with her power. Because apparently Monarch Fairies are Special.

She's also very, very close with this enchanted suit of armor named Modeus. Very close. Definitely just friends.

❝ Oh, ❞ says Vanth as a totally intelligent observation. He hadn't seen her wings, looking straight on into the crowd with uncertainty like he was. If it weren't for them fluttering idly against her back, Vanth might have likened her pointed ears to Sebastian's instead. ❝ You must've come pretty far, then—you know, openly showing that identity now and all. ❞

Vanth wouldn't call it envy—the feeling is much too benign and mild for that. But he does find himself wishing that, someday, there won't be so much of him to hide. Perhaps not on Earth, but hopefully in Hell. ❝ Uh, I don't— ❞ For some reason, Vanth gestures with his hand, making the flustered shape of a wine glass. ❝ I don't drink. Alcohol, I mean. Stupid question, but would any drink work? ❞ What drinks would there even be in the devil's domain? Blood? At least that's something he has experience with... ❝ I guess I gotta up my small talk game while I'm at it, huh... Like, maybe it's just me—simple commoner or whatever—but fancy people do a lot of small talk. ❞ He's seen dramas; everyone knows those are 100% accurate.

Lucia's responding smile is fond. "One of my roommates early on in my stay here helped me with that--he comes from a world where his having wings was lauded, and... well, he helped me."

"I started small, being open about them. First just at home with him, then at our shared workspace with our coworkers, and eventually just... everywhere."

She turns to him fully, expression contrite. "Oh! I-I apologize for assuming. But, well, yes, I suppose whatever suits you could be in the glass."

She chuckles then. "Small talk is the most abominable social construct in the universe, but yes, there's quite a bit of that when you're among nobility. They often like to use their words to start and fight battles as well--what they say could appear genial on the surface, but behind the words is a sharp, poisonous dagger." Lucia scoffs. "Still, if one wants to survive in high society, they learn. And if they're lucky, they chance to become rather good at it."

"Oh--" With a blink, she recalls, "And you said you've found yourself in a position where all of this... silliness is in your future, yes? You must have someone bringing you into all of this, so... don't be afraid to lean on them, both in terms of asking for advice, as well as literally physically being by their side, or someone else whom you or they trust. Safety in numbers, and all of that."

Vanth blinks, then deflates. It's less a self-conscious shrinking and more a relief for some of the pressure he's built up and held in until now—finally, someone notices. ❝ You have a pretty sharp eye for fish outta water, huh? ❞

❝ Pfft. To be honest with you? I'm totally flying blind by the seat of my ass, here... ❞ Hopefully, she won't misunderstand him. He's appreciative of her empathy, even if he's unequipped for it. Humor tends to be his go-to response for his insecurities. ❝ When you say pattern... you mean like, watching other people and figuring one out? ❞ Though even that feels off—people-watching typically has a very different purpose for the likes of him. Vanth has forgotten how to be normal, or even a person at all, for that matter. Attempting that, in a setting like this? It's almost impossible. ❝ I'm not the sort of guy who usually asks for advice, but—yeeaaah, I'm asking for advice. I kinda need it. Apparently, I have a future that involves a lot more of these. ❞ And he wants to impress, regardless of how understanding Sebastian is. It's only expected to have that desire for someone so important to you, right? ❝ From the way you're talking, it sounds like you were a fish like me too, yeah? ❞ He might be in good hands, then.

Lucia relaxed as well, when her unsought approach is received with appreciation.

"I suppose I was, in a few different ways, yes. And I know if I were to return home now, I'd still very much be a fish out of water. To outsiders, and indeed most people in my life, I was the ward of a lord who took me in--my origins and blood unknown, but my appearance and manners desirable."

Her hand reflexively moves to her pointed ears, as proudly displayed as her wings, and adorned with sparkling earrings. "And then there's the issue of my hidden identity as a fairy. I can count the number of living people who know on one hand, and the people I've voluntarily told on a single finger--back home, at least."

Her hand fell to her side and she cleared her throat. "So... yes, I've got a touch of experience in finding a way to feel less like an outsider at events such as this."

"In any case, yes, people watching is one way to occupy your attention at these. I also find seeing how long you can make a single glass of wine works twofold, also preventing anyone from forcing new drinks on you. I don't recommend aiming for speed rather than longevity on that game, however."

Lucia's eyes caught on a slim figure along the edges of the ball, on his own but looking like he's waiting for someone--his date, most likely. But there was an out-of-place expression in his eyes, something extra behind his impatience for his date's return--perhaps he had even less experience being an accepted part of festivities like these than she did.

"You get used to it, you know," she begins, standing in some empty space beside him and turning about to face the rest of the ballroom. "It's not that the energy or extravagance ever get easier to meet, don't misunderstand. But you do find a... pattern for yourself, that allows you to feel like you fit."

As Lucia reached to retrieve a glass of sparkling wine from a passing attendant's tray, she finds her hand bumping with that of a stranger reaching for the same glass. "Oh, my apologies--"

Lucia grabs another glass, as well as the one she'd been reaching for, offering that to the other woman, finding she needs to raise her chin far more than expected to truly meet her eyes. "Here, please. The crowd makes it difficult not to constantly bump into others, does it not?"

HER DEMEANOR appears to be much lighter than before. she has found a way to thrive here, with circumstances being far kinder compared to that of their home. perhaps... this will prove to be more of a home for them, after all. with luck, the others will find them here; baynard, peres, norrix--- and they can all truly be free.

Lucia leans into Modeus' hand, shutting her eyes against the sensation; the gentle pull at her hair, the care and slowness to every touch.

"I wish for the same," she admits, her voice barely above a whisper. "We don't even need music, you know; we can simply... start."

"My feeling safe, and unafraid, extends to you, as well, you know." She cracks her eyes open, peering at Modeus. "I need for you to feel safe and unafraid, just the same. I want to see you free to learn about the world, and about yourself, without concern or trepidation. And I truly believe you can find that here."

6. do you have ideal writing circumstances when you can do a lot of drafts or tackle really long ones very easily?

bro if i have the motivation i'll do just about anything. and motivation/spoons are hard for me to come by lately so i don't really wait for/have any sort of dream scenario wherein i can crank a bunch of writing out, other than "no other tasks need me, and i feel motivated"

17. what is your biggest obstacle to writing every day, if time doesn’t count

honestly? my internet/computer situation at home. my internet isn't great and everything moves slow if i have more than a single tab open in a browser, and that's the hugest demotivator in the world for an adhd girl who's gotta go fast before the impulse is lost.

24. what’s your thought process when you format? any unspoken rules you follow?

i have a few things i do, i guess. first, dialogue gets bolded. a new paragraph begins after speech for the most part, unless it's a continuous thought broken by a comma-inserted descriptor in the middle of a bit of dialogue.

i also try to keep my icons to either the beginning or end of the post, either with no text above, or with a paragraph or less below, depending on the context of the thread. I also tend to place icons around where i've used dialogue, but that's not a hard-and-fast rule.

3. how often do you reach for a synonym dictionary when writing? how about mentally?

physically/digitally? relatively often. mentally? pretty much constantly.

here's the thing with me: i have a weird vocabulary. this has always been a thing with me--i'll pull out words to use in normal situations that have people looking at me like "why is that the word you chose". like i think i used the word "behoove" in a dnd session once and someone later was like "great use of behoove btw" and i was just like "bro i couldn't think of the normal person word i'm sorry". words and language are probably one of the things i could consider a hyperfixation and i have a constantly spinning rolodex of terms i can use in writing but sometimes i can't remember the word "benefit" and instead i have to say "behoove".

13. does writing roleplay things in public spaces make you uncomfortable?

smashcut to me, at the public facing desk at work right at this moment: lol no not really, but i gotta be careful who can see me

23. does the total amount of threads you have going on matter to you, or just how many you owe?

the amount i have going at a given time is a bit more important to me, because i know if i have a bunch of plates spinning at once, at some point i'm gonna drop one. i just know my attention span isn't what it used to be in RP, so i try to keep my current amount of threads in the single digits at the very least.

5. do you listen to music while your write?

sometimes! it depends on if i've remembered to, or if i'm already listening to something else like youtube or a movie, or if i'm doing secret roleplay (aka rp at work). especially lately, RP writing is very spur-of-the-moment and impulsive for me, so i don't always think about what's happening around me audio-wise unless it's sounds i wanna block out.

7. are you a morning, day, evening, or night writer?

i am a "whatever time it is that i find the urge and inspiration kicking in" writer. is it 10am and i'm on desk at work? is it 9:37PM and i just had the impulse as i was finishing dinner? doesn't matter, if i can get myself onto a computer, i'll go and write.
