This site has some great examples of animated work, and every month they showcase different creative work, from across a range of design disciplines.
More 3D steampunk influenced artworks and objects. A range of small metallic and mechanical parts and components from devices/products such as analogue watches and clocks are evident in this work by Russian artist, Albe Goyec. More of his work can be found on his blog at:

Collage work by Loui Jover, an Australian artist. He utilises printed pages from books, ink, paint, pencil, sheet music and images to create his expressive works. There is also a strong fashion illustrative style evident in some of his other pieces. Any or all these techniques, materials and media could be used to represent and depict your own ideas and concepts for this project.
