“Um…this looks a bit different than it did on the website, doesn’t it?” Atsushi had been expecting a dark, decrepit mansion covered in cracks and with pieces falling off. So far this building surrounded by a couple jack-o-lanterns, cheap cobwebs, and obviously-fake crows was a bit of a let-down. Maybe it would look better on the inside? At least the price is cheap, he thought as he finished paying for their tickets.

En shrugged from behind Atsushi, yawning a little as he glanced around. “That’s disappointing,” he replied, though he was secretly a little relieved that the mansion wasn’t at all as it was cracked up to be. Despite being better at hiding his fears nowadays, most horror genre staples were kind of a pain in the ass to encounter and deal with–the only reason he was coming along at all was because Atsushi was with him, to be honest. As he idly watched a plastic spider dangle from a cobweb, he added, “Atsushi, did you know–scientific explanations for why a haunted house could be haunted include misinterpreting naturally occurring noises in structures and waking dreams?”

“Mm, that makes sense,” Atsushi said as they wandered into the next room, which was somewhat darker than the first. “People always seem to overreact to things like that. They can’t just accept not knowing where a noise came from; they always have to come up with an explanation for it, even if it’s unrealistic.” Speaking of noises, the too-fake-to-be-scary creaking sounds suddenly paused - then started up again a few seconds later. “…Do they just have one sound-effect track playing on repeat?” As disappointing as this was, the disastrous attempt at horror was almost humorous in and of itself.

“Pretty much sums it up, yeah,” En agreed, shrugging with a slight smile as they wandered into a darker room. He didn’t even need to pretend to not be wary of what was going on in this mansion–the creaking sounds’ weird repetitiveness lessened whatever spooky atmosphere the mansion’s residents were trying for. If nothing else, this made it clear that he wasn’t going through another round of Silent Hill or something designed to cause a more effective scare.

Though he wasn’t incredibly focused on the visual effects of the ‘haunted’ mansion they were in, he couldn’t help but notice there was some effort put into making the interior look ominous–fake blood splatter near some of the cracks, conspicuously placed cobwebs, as well as the eerie actual creaks of some of the floorboards as they walked across them. It was just that some of them were so obvious that it was hard for him to be scared, really, and he yawned a bit when the fake creaking sound effects started up again. “How long is that going to go on…”

Atsushi laughed quietly when he noticed En yawning. “Getting tired of it already?” He couldn’t blame him if he was, it wasn’t really–

Huh, Atsushi thought. He could have sworn that the tall coat rack covered in a sheet next to the doorway in front of them had just moved slightly. He must be imagining things. The windows were open; it was probably just a breeze. Refocusing his attention on En, he quickly forgot about it.

“What do you think we’ll find in the next room?” he asked as they kept walking toward the doorway next to the coat rack.

En didn’t miss the way Atsushi’s laughter seemed to almost subside as he glanced somewhere off to the side from the doorway–almost as though he noticed something amiss. Though, if the way he recovered from that was any indication, it probably wasn’t a big deal. Probably. Not that En himself made a big deal of it either way.

“Probably the same old, same old,” he replied with a languid shrug, eyebrows creased for a second. “Maybe they’ll try a fake corpse hanging from a noose this time.” He’s pretty sure he vaguely heard of this kind of gimmick somewhere. It sounded like something that should be effective, but given this mansion’s track record so far, he didn’t doubt that the gimmick would fall flat in the scary department.

(For him, though, that’s probably for the best.)

A look of surprise crossed En’s face as a familiar voice chirped from behind him, even as he turned around and came face to face with the ever-friendly Yumoto. “Oh–hey, Yumoto,” he replied, reaching over to pat his underclassman on the head. “Guess I have. How’re you?”

Trying not to shudder outwardly as he recalled the hell Yumoto put him and the rest of the DC through that one time, En just shrugged. “Not much.” A pause. “I guess I like some of the slower boat rides.” Mostly because they didn’t raise his heartbeat rate to tachycardiac levels.

Having been almost dozing off under the sunshine while doodling, En was surprised to suddenly find a little pup plopped in his lap–and right over his sketchbook, no less. Moving the little pup–which he had to admit was cute–off his lap so no excrement befalls his sketches, he glanced up at the culprit greyface. “Okay?”

This puppy might end up being the subject of one of his sketches, tbh.
