Favorite Merthur Things

Everyone remembers Merlin saying Arthur’s name in his sleep.

Now, he has a perfectly good reason for doing this because he’s trying to reach him with his magic. He’s trying to warn him about the trap, give him light, and guidance. Merlin saying his name here is perfectly justifiable.

However, there is the time that Arthur says Merlin’s name in his sleep.

Now, Arthur here has no reason for this. He’s just unconscious from a wound that’s gone sour. Nothing dramatic even happened when he lost consciousness, it was simply the infection taking its toll.

It could be argued that it’s just because Merlin was the last person he was with, and that it’s completely normal. I’d agree with you if there were any other points in the show where any character said another’s name in their sleep like this. It doesn’t happen.

I genuinely want to know why the writers chose to do this. It’s clear that they needed Arthur to start waking up/speaking to interrupt Merlin’s conversation with his dad to build more tension, but they could have done anything to achieve that goal. A simple groan in pain, him shifting positions, whatever; instead they deliberately have him say Merlin’s name.

As a writer myself, I can’t fathom having a character say someone else’s name in their sleep without having a reason. That reason could be plot, like Merlin trying to contact Arthur through magic, or it could be hinting at inner thoughts/emotions of the character. I personally wouldn’t have my character say their friend’s name in their sleep without a cause. Having them say the name of the character they like perhaps? That I could see doing, because it implies the idea of dreaming about the person you’re in love with. It can be a subtle way to indicate their attraction/attachment to someone.

It’s this bullshit that causes them to stay in my brain ALL THE TIME.
