* [Yuuken certainly wasn’t expecting the other to do that; if anything, he was expecting them to keep hiding behind the shamisen and attack him, with him unable to attack back. He was still pissed, sure, but he couldn’t help but respect such an honorable action. After Kaito puts the shamisen down.. He still doesn’t attack, lightning dying down.]

[…Ugh. I’m still pissed, but.. Maybe you’re not as much of a dumbass as I thought. Attack me now if you’d like, but if you do I’m going to keep fighting. ]

* [ He hoped that Kaito would get the hint. He was still mad, he still wanted to lay the beatdown on this kid, but.. Maybe he could forgive him for waking him up so rudely, just this once, for not using that instrument as a shield. If Kaito stopped attacking now, Yuuken would probably calm down, and they’d be able to have a second introduction. ] 

“I didn’t want to in the first place, you’re the one that attacked me, stupid guitar.” He huffed; he was not letting this stupid thing get the last word in if he had anything to say about it. Perhaps that was him just being extremely stubborn over something just as extremely trivial, but he wouldn’t let this thing be the one to sway the truth of what happened. Not on his watch.

In the end, if this thing wanted to keep attacking him after making it seem like he wouldn’t, Kaito would be pulling it out to help him fight. Uncertainty be damned, he wasn’t going to go down and certainly not against someone going back on their words. It probably was the best for both of them if they just both calmed down and stopped. 

Especially since they both seemed to start clashing pretty easily.

* [ At that, the guitar felt like he had been struck, and his rage bubbled ever hotter inside of him; afraid!? He was never afraid! He lets out a noise that sounds like a half-shred, half-growl and lets off some more electricity into the ground, but still doesn’t attack. ]

[ You’re hiding the same way I’d be if I was holding an innocent human in front of me so you couldn’t hurt me! THAT’S what I mean! ] 

* [ Look at him.. size him up.. there. If Yuuken could slide through the other’s legs, he could attack him from behind without damaging the other instrument. Now, he just had to wait for the right opportunity. ]

♫♪♬!? ♩♫♬, ♭!!

Kaito just blinked.

This was... not what he expected to be happening at all; not that anything that has happened to him lately was expected either. He looked down at the shamisen in his hands, back up to the enraged guitar before him, before looking back down again. He... guessed that he understood that reasoning. I this stupid guitar saw this instrument as one of his kin, than Kaito really was doing as it said he was.

It... was a strange way to look at things but... he kind of understood it. As much as he really wanted to see what would happen if he tried channeling his SOUL through this instrument, it wasn’t right. Plus he had been doing fine without it before anyway.

So the boy backed up.... and placed the string instrument against a rock behind him. This was beyond stupid of him to do, but the comparison was in his head. “There. Happy? If you hit it, it’s your fault now.”

  When the boy paused - or recoiled, for that matter - and began to look   about, Totoko got startled herself and stopped playing. She hastily   resumed the appearance of an ordinary shamisen in time to seem as   such if and when the boy looked her way.

  But when the boy asked that question…

  * … …

  Totoko’s mind raced. When it came to non-yokai persons, she would keep   up her ordinary instrument act so she wouldn’t make others uncomfortable   with her. But this boy - the song he taught her, and his reaction… it   seemed like being honest would be a better way to go about this.

  Not that that helped her nerves in the slightest, but.   She had to do something - right?

  After a few beats of silence, Totoko gained the courage to raise her voice.

  * … ♩.

  – Or rather, she managed to muster up the bravery to utter a single note.   A confirmation - a testing of waters.

He was about ready to start chastising himself for the ridiculous thought. Instruments weren’t alive, and they couldn’t play without someone working them; he was stupid to even ask his question allowed. And then the single note chimed in his ears, completely rocking that belief off it’s high perch.

If Kaito had been a cat, his hair would have been sticking up on its ends in surprise. Good thing that wasn’t the case because that would have just been plain silly. 

He sat there in silence, wide eyes just staring at the shaminsen before him... which was completely alive... No this was crazy. He had to have been hearing things, there was no way this was even possible. It could just be someone messing with him or maybe a.. a breeze moved one of the chords at a very inconvenient time. These reasonings made even less sense, but at least they were something he could wrap his head around.

  Totoko stayed motionless for a long time.

  The boy who found her was avoiding other monsters, from what she had   gathered - perhaps out of shyness, or from some fear that Totoko had   no idea nor business to know. Now that the boy had settled for the night,   it was only a matter of time before his attention could go elsewhere,   and for her to begin practicing her music.

  Then the boy began to hum.

  With an internal start, the animated shamisen listened closely to the   boy’s song. It sounded like a lullaby; something soothing, if not   a bit lonely, considering the person who was indirectly teaching her   the song. When the song came to an end, Totoko replayed the music in her   mind as she waited for the boy to look away from her.

  When the boy’s eyes were no longer on her - when Totoko was out of sight -

  * 🎼♩♩♩…

  She quietly recited the song the boy had sung, gentle wordless music   resounding from her.

How long has it been since he’s resorted to that song’s comfort? Before... there had been only one other person who knew this melody, and they were long gone. This song used to bring such happiness whenever he was blessed enough to hear it, now it was just a lonely cry. After all, one can’t hum a lullaby without remembering the comfort of the woman it came from.

Who knows why he continued to hum it after she was gone, Kaito couldn’t even answer that question himself. Yet one thing he did know was that the moment the ghostly melody echoed back to him, every inch of his body frozen like ice water had been poured on him.

Logic moved quickly to rein in his inner child, reminding himself that she was gone, had been for years, and that would never change. He... he needed to at least try to keep some composure, at least until he figured out what was going on. Bluish eyes shot around him, scanning about for anyone who could possibly be around and watching. Yet... there was no one. 

It was just him and this shamisen... but there was no way...

Right?

* [At the boy taking the shamisen out and preparing to use it as a normal instrument.. Yuuken stops entirely, with the bullets and all, though he’s still angry and ready to fight. If he kept using magic bullets and electricity he risked shocking or hitting the other instrument.]

 * [ Even if he used the instrument to generate soundwaves, now, to hurt him, he couldn’t attack back, as much as he wanted to. Not unless he got behind the other or somehow got clear of the instrument he could damage. ]

[ Oh, trust me, you’ll be feelin’ a lot more as soon as you stop hiding behind that instrument like a coward! ] 

* [ Despite his angry, tough face, Yuuken was being more cautious, now, sizing Kaito up. Gotta find some way to get behind him to continue to strike, or end the fight entirely before the other did anything rash with that shamisen. ] 

“Hiding? What the-- You and I clearly have different definitions of the word hiding. How’s taking this thing out any different than what I’ve already been doing!?” This just became silly; it wasn’t like he had started running or found a  rock to cower behind. No, Kaito was in the same spot that he had been in from the start, give or take a few feet. 

Something was different now though. The stupid guitar wasn’t throwing attacks at him; not that he was complaining at all about it. Was it because he took the shamisen out? He hadn’t even done anything with it and he didn’t even know if he could use it, what did this thing have to be so worried about?

“Seems to me you’re the one being the coward. Afraid of another string instrument?” A cocky person would have taken the time to toss about the instrument like an idiot trying to show off. Good thing Kaito wasn’t one of those people.

* [Yuuken’s just about to fire off some more lightning bolts when he notices the soundwaves coming straight for him - Definitely not something he expected, magic from a human, of all things - And this in turn caught Yuuken off guard, receiving a faceful of bluish magic, pushing the guitar back!]

* [Just now, though, Yuuken was noticing the Shamisen that was strapped to the other’s back, sticking up past his shoulder.. Yuuken hesitates, a moment. He could keep using bullet attacks, but no more physical ones.. He didn’t want that instrument to be damaged. Quietly, his mind goes back to the wound underneath his sarashi, the crack he had sustained. Never again, not to him or any other instrument, living or inanimate.] 

* [..For now, he shoots off some more lightning bullets towards him, crackling with their own energy.] 

When the guitar pauses its attacks, Kaito takes the chance to think. He really didn’t want to risk whatever power he was damaging his throat. Not being able to talk would definitely prove to be very detrimental to anything he tried to do, not to mention would also cause countless problems on its own. 

He took the shamisen off his back and held it in front of him. Maybe he could... possible use the instrument to attack like that instead of using his own voice. Instruments made music as well; it shouldn’t be that hard. Though if this didn’t work, he’d be in a little bit of trouble. Good thing the guitar seemed a little distracted.

“Is that all you’ve got? Come on, I barely even felt that last one.” Even a tiny, little lie like that left a horrid taste in his mouth. Trying to act tough wasn’t worth it sometimes.

* [Either way, after this initial attack, he’d be shooting off bolts of lightning and soundwaves! His honor was on the line, here! If not his honor, his tough image.. If he was defeated, though, he’d probably calm down.] 

The brief change of tone caught him off guard, which unfortunately meant that he received a face full of guitar as the stupid instrument crossed the line into fight land. Okay maybe the stupid thing hit a bit harder than he had expected. Shaking off the headbutt, Kaito’s hands came up to his ears as the soundwaves crashed into him, pushing him back as a few bolts landed on their target. Note to self, stop assuming things won’t hurt. 

“I said KNOCK IT OFF.” As he yells, the bluish-colored SOUL moves from his chest to his throat, just as similarly colored soundwaves leave his throat. They clash with the ending remnants of the guitar’s own attack and burst through them. Kaito pants as his attack fades, the small heart returning to it’s spot on his chest.  

He was still getting used to that happening whenever he was in a fight, but it wasn’t like he was complaining. Still, maybe he should try using something other than his own voice to fight; who knows if it will have repercussions later involving him losing it... He did have that shamisen he had found on the side of the road still attached to his back....

* [Maybe, maybe not, but Yuuken wasn’t thinking straight anymore. To be honest, he was itching for a fight. He wouldn’t be this angry, usually, but being woken up and being touched were two big no-nos for him, both buttons pressed by a stranger. He takes a deep breath, despite his lack of a mouth.. and exhales. ]

[ I wasn’t expectin’ an apology for the pluck, but that and being insulted like that, on top of it? That’s not something I’ll forgive easily.. I’d say you should, before I shock it out of you. ] 

“Quit calling me a dumbass!” He stopped himself from taking another step back as the living guitar came up right into his face, completely invading his personal space. If he wasn’t already agitated from the name-calling, he certainly is now with his personal bubble being so rudely popped. 

“Only bullies use threats like that to get what they want; you’ll get nothing out of me no matter what you do. And that’s that.” A smarter person would have taken the chance and apologized, easily defusing the situation as quickly as possible. Except Kaito isn’t that smart, not when he’s mad that is. And he’s certainly not afraid of this dumb thing, it’s not like it should be able to do that much damage right? It’s not like it’s some thundercloud, it’s just a guitar.

“Plus you insulted me first.”

* [Yuuken still crackles with electricity, on his guard. He was still pissed off at this stranger. No to the point of wanting to FIGHT just yet, but they were already starting to wear his nerves thin.] 

“HEY! Who are you calling a dumbass--” It was a legitimate question, because guitars didn’t just hop up, slither and start calling you names all of a sudden. It just didn’t happen. They also didn’t just start crackling with electricity; Kaito took another step back out of reflex, not wanting to really tango with this thing all that much. Not that he wouldn’t if it came down to it...

“Maybe I haven’t, ever think about that? Why else would I have asked, stupid!” He growled, not wanting to appear as if he was afraid at all; which he wasn’t, that sort of thought was stupid too. “And maybe I would have apologized but now I don’t think I will.”

* [The reaction upon plucking the string would be instantaneous; a fairly strong jolt of electricity would flow through the guitar, from head to body. Not enough to cause any damage, but enough to sting, and.. almost instantly, the guitar spawns eyes and slithers backwards like a snake.]

[ Hey, hey, HEY, what’s the big deal, sneaking up on me while I was sleeping like that!? Do you want some trouble or something?]

* [Small bolts of electricity arc from his lower body and ‘tail’ to the ground, evidently a display to intimidate the other.] 

If the jolt of electricity didn’t cause him to hop back, the sudden animation and speaking from an object that had been stationary definitely did. This couldn’t be happening and shouldn’t be possible nor real. Except the slight tingling from the shock told him there was no way he was sleeping on the side of the road somewhere.
