    “Advice?” Surprised that anyone would ask him for advice on how to be a captain-- and someone from most likely a better team, too, Makoto had to pause for a second as he gathered his thoughts.

    “Are you sure I’m the one to ask?” He tilted his head and offered a sheepish smile. It was true that he helped to keep the team together and organize joint practices with Samezuka for the past two years, but really, Gou-chan had done a lot more of the dirtywork than he did. He was hesitant out of fear of taking credit where it wasn’t due.

    “If Rin picked you to follow in his footsteps, it must have been for a very good reason.” Rin was smart like that, and he wouldn’t throw his team to a chance future captain. “But...I can speak from experience, I guess!” What could it hurt? He had no ill will or malice towards Nitori or his team, so why not help? 

    “Iwatobi...is a lot smaller than Samezuka, but having a manager like Gou-chan around to hep keep things coordinated was a huge help. So, I think it’s important to work with others and don’t take on too much all at once. Also, while good swimming takes discipline, try to keep from getting tunnel vision with competitions. Continue to swim your best and lead through example so everyone pushes, but have fun at the same time!” Otherwise, morale would drop and if swimming became more of a hassle than an activity to enjoy, the team would surely suffer for it through dropouts and lack of motivation.

    It had been three hours. 

    A now-cold cup of green tea sat next to Makoto, a few specks of leaves floating on the surface as the brunet sat at a booth at the cornerstop noodleshop, his head in his hands and his elbows on the table as he hovered over his Foundations in English text and tried not to drool on the pages. Food had come and gone, and by now, Makoto was sure there would be a permanent print in his--and Haru’s seats.

    “Do you think we should continue tomorrow?” Makoto mumbled to his book, heaving a sigh as his hands slid from his forehead up into his hair and his glasses fell to the table with a quiet thud. “I can’t feel my face...” He groaned, sitting up and leaning back with mussed hair as he put his glasses back on.

    Haruka felt those strong arms slide around him, encasing him, holding him firmly like an anchor. His body shifted closer to Makoto’s as the other boy pulled him, and slender fingers dug gently into the silky fabric of Makoto’s shirt.     The chicken could burn. He’d bought extra.     They never hugged. For as close as they were, something like hugging was surprisingly rare between Makoto and Haruka. It was an exchange they had never needed. They expressed their feelings in subtle gestures, in glances and soft smiles. Words weren’t needed. Close contact wasn’t needed.     But things had changed since Tokyo. Haruka felt a pull deep in his gut, a yearning to be as close to Makoto as possible, to hold onto him and not let go.     It was harder when Makoto wasn’t there. Everything was harder.     Growing up was scary and overwhelming and he should have been prepared for all of this but he wasn’t. He wasn’t.     “It’s not good,” he murmured. His voice wavered. “That you have to ask me something like that.” His chest felt tight as he pressed his face into Makoto’s chest.

    When they first left home, Makoto thought that someone as independent as Haru would adjust fine to moving to Tokyo, and that he would thrive like never before in the world of professional swimming... He’d never looked for comfort like this, though. Usually it was the other way around and in times when they were both much smaller. He hated to admit it to himself, but less time together was making it harder to read Haru’s mind and understand his troubles.

    “No, it’s not.” He sighed, carding his fingers through Haru’s hair without even thinking...

    Until he did.

    Frozen in place, Makoto's face flushed bright red just as he’d realized what he’d just done. Was that weird? That was weird, right? He couldn’t move, and didn’t dare look down at Haru. Great. Haru came to him in need of comfort, and he’d gone and weirded him out. Makoto closed his eyes and silently lamented his fate to the ceiling while he quickly patted Haru on the back and tried to go back to their nice, innocent hug. 

    “But, even if we’re both more separate than ever, that doesn’t mean we have to be distant.” He risked a downward look and hoped that his face had calmed down. “That’s all up to us. Why don’t you let me in a little? That way, I can help...instead of just plead?”

    Tilting his head in sympathy, his easygoing smile was ever present on his face. It was hard to be mad a something so cute and tiny. 

    “It’s really nothing, but I believe you! I've never had a dog like yours, but I used to know a dog that could run for blocks and blocks, some of them can really wear you out!” -and when they’re small like this little pom was, they could be just as hard to catch as catch up to if they ever got loose. “But they’re really cute, so it’s okay...” Just like he was with cats, he was weak to dogs as well. All it took was one look with those puppy eyes...and he’d be totally ruined.
