dennis is a very, very vocal omega. very. because sure, omegas are well known for purring and chirping and such, but dennis takes it to the next level. he's like little guinea pig, making noise as often as he breaths.
he doesn't do it on purpose, it's just his natural omegan state of being. he hated it for a while, because his family found it annoying and troublesome on the farm, but robby's taught him to love it and accept it again.
by default, dennis purrs when he sleeps. not just when hes extra warm and cosy, but all the time. as soon as he nods off there's the rhythmic vibration coming from his throat and chest, that oh so calming sound. robby loves to snuggle his omega on his own chest and belly so that he can feel every one of the sound waves. it's a noisy purr, but robby sleeps so well under his precious boy.
dennis is loud when awake too. he chirps and trills and coos and chitters constantly. he's finished a chart? that means a happy chirp. robby comes to scent him during his shift? that's a trill and a coo. hes thinking about hanging out with trinity and javadi? an excited little chitter will do the trick. everyone gets used to it, and dennis revels in the praise he gets for such sweet noises.
his alpha especially is obsessed with them- dennis knows whenever he trills or coos, robby will answer with a deep rumble that makes dennis's omega hindbrain gravitate to him. when they cuddle together in bed at night, it's a perfect den full of noise. dennis is purring and chirping- and even trilling, somehow- in his sleep, and robby letting out an incesant rumble.
dennis's constant high pitched omega noises are what earn him the nickname "little mouse" from his alpha. robby's precious mousy, his special little one, his darling baby mouse, so squeaky and adorable. they only make dennis chirp more.
One choice the show made in revealing Robby’s character is showing us that he’s friendly with staff at all levels of the hierarchy in the hospital (except admin because this man hates the hierarchy). He and Ahmad are friendly. He knows Esme’s name, uses it, and asks how she is in both seasons. If you don’t work in a hospital you might not know that this really isn’t typical for doctors. Many will ignore the cleaning staff entirely. Few would know their names. Esme likes Robby enough that she saw him struggling during the MCI and asked if he needed anything, if he wanted her to grab him something to eat. That speaks to their relationship and to why the staff like him so much. He talks to them as equals. He doesn’t put himself on a pedestal, and that is really not common among doctors.
Big fan of Robby and Jack fully funding Dennis’ life. When they first got together, Dennis was a bit reluctant to let them spend money on him at all but it did not take much time before Dennis was pocketing one of their cards to keep on his person.
One time, Dennis had given Jack back his card bc he needed that specific card for something and had forgotten to hand it back to him. Dennis had been out to eat with Trinity and was going to pay but remembered the lack of his boyfriend’s card and had slid his own card into the reader with a pout. He sent a picture to the two of them of his receipt with the message had to fend for myself today :( attached. He immediately got a Venmo from Jack covering the entire meal and a text that said I’ll get you set up with Apple Pay when you get home, sorry about today babe.
Trinity started laughing at him and called him their sugar baby, but Dennis just rolled his eyes bc even she was reaping the benefits of their salary’s. It was only last week that she tagged alongside Dennis and Robby to dinner and drinks and there wasn’t even a question on whose tab Trinity’s food was going on. After a few cocktails the two had begged Robby to let them have a sleepover, the older man just laughing at the show they were putting on for him (“dude, I promise if we do a little choreography for him he’ll say yes no issue.”) as he pushed them into the car. He drove them to the convenience store by the house and let them have free rein over the isles, just pushing the cart and clicking his tongue at the sweets they kept piling in. They got to the checkout counter, Dennis and Trinity leaning on each other for support as the lady scanned each item and asked Robby cash or card? Before he could pull his credit card out of his pocket, Trinity slid over a pack of gum from the rack and told him “wait, I’ll definitely need this for tomorrow,” Robby just nodding along and handing over the pack to the lady with a smile.
Just a boy and his girl getting rightfully taken care of 🩷
My favorite type of angst is Rabbot forgetting about Dennis: like, his birthday, their anniversary dinner, any date but they realize it only too late and when they get there the guy says “that’s fine” while looking at them like this:
It didnt take long for people to work out that Jack was seeing someone new, it took some blood spraying him to reveal everything.
"Jesus Abbot, you get attacked by a werewolf?"
Dana shouting out her question had any eyes that werent on the shirtless attending to see what she was referring to. Littered over his back was shallow scratches, hickies, and actual teeth marks of bites. Instead of blushing red like most might have, Jack smiled smugly and continued pulling on the clean scrub top.
Then it was just common knowledge, Jack Abbot was dating, he didnt say much about her but the hickies were displayed higher above his collar. A few people made comments to try and provoke more information of of their boss but it would just cause Jack to get a dazed happy look on his face.
What was surprising was when Robby bent down low, causing his top to rise and expose his lower back and the matching marks Jack wore. Rumours spread like wildfire, by the time Jack came in for handover, the whole E.D was certain that the attendings were hooking up with each other.
When Jack heard the rumours as he stood next to Robby, all the night attending could do was laugh and pat his back in solidarity.
"Guess they're gonna mark up your neck too brother."
Now the rumours changed, some believed the pair where hired the same escort, both were in a sugar daddy situation, or they had decided to share a girlfriend due to their schedules.
It wasnt until a young girl in her late twenties was brought in and being treated by Robby that everyone realised what was going on. The patient was attractive and knew it, constantly flirting or touching Robby, even with the marks also being risen above his collar. Although Robby clarified he had a partner, the patient was persistent, lightly flirting with a flustered Robby, making all but one staff member laugh
Dennis was agitated. He was grumbling and storming around the department, the only person who seemed to find the joy in his behaviour was Santos who appeared to be enjoying his tantrum. Many could hear the conversation between Dennis and Jack when he came in for handover.
"He's obviously not available, she has eyes."
"I know"
"What does he have to do? Have a tattoo declaring him off limits?"
"Im sure he would get the tattoo"
"Would you?"
"Yeah I guess so"
This caused Whitaker to smile for the first time since the female patient was brought in. Many pretended to not be listening even if they were, why did Whitaker care so much? Did he want the patient to flirt with him? Jack walked with Dennis but as they passed the room where Robby was, both stopped.
"This is Dr Abbot, he will be taking over your care tonight and hopefully discharging you"
"Sad to see you go Robby, I cant complain at your replacement though."
At the end of his patience, Dennis stood, thinking before he finally sprung into action
"Really?"
He pulled Abbot down into an aggressive kiss before pushing the man and moving to Robby to repeat his movements. Both of the older men were dazed, confused, but happy as Dennis took control.
"Im gonna hand over to Ellis and then im waiting in the car Robby. And both of you are getting my name on you or something."
The young doctor stormed off, doing exactly as he stated. The E.D tried to return to normal like that hadnt just happened but all struggled, no one dared to say a thing, not sure what to say.
By the time everyone had become comfortable with the fact that mousy innocent Dennis was walking these two men like dogs, no one was that surprised when the men had the word 'Dennis' tattooed on their wrists
on occasion, dennis whitaker will ground himself with… the ground. growing up with hardwood floors, it wasn’t uncommon for him or his brothers to splay out on the floor to try to escape the summer heat. nowadays though, he just drops to the carpet of the apartment whenever he feels homesick.
the first time he was a little nervous, turning to trinity and asking, “hey, is it cool if i like… lay on the floor?”
“umm, sure? i don’t care, man.”
it becomes one of those behaviors of his that trinity deems slightly weird. eventually she gets used to it, and doesn’t even bat an eye when she has to step over him, sprawled across the kitchen floor, to get to the fridge. sometimes he falls asleep, most times it’s just for the comforting familiarity.
baran, however, does not have the same knowledge, and one afternoon, about 2 months into dating trinity, she opens the apartment door with trinity in tow carrying groceries. that’s when she finds dennis inexplicably laying loose-limbed along the living room floor.
immediately considering the worst, a habit she’s picked up since working at the pitt, she braces herself to face whatever may be wrong with him. looking back at trinity, she whispers, “don’t go in there… let me take care of this.” locking the door behind her, baran anxiously creeps towards dennis’s slack body.
confounded and worried, trinity sets down the bags and searches for the spare key under the mat. then, she cracks the door open to peek inside and sees the scene playing out. silently laughing to herself, she sneaks up behind baran, who’s about to check for a pulse, and gently tosses a loaf of bread at dennis. it lands right on his sternum, and he’s suddenly resurrected.
simultaneously, baran and dennis sigh out the words, “what the fuck.” baran out of confusion, dennis out of annoyance.
unable to hold her laughter back anymore, trinity starts heading to the hallway to get the rest of groceries, “we got white bread for the white boy!”
dennis groans out a thanks, and baran, trying to regain control of her breathing, flops down next to him on the floor.
robby gets crazy cuteness aggression over dennis and I know it's been said but I'm gonna say it again. he's grabbing that poor boy's face and smacking kisses all over it, so infatuated it's almost frustrating. goddamn it, den, how are you real????
alternatively dennis who gets cuteness aggression over robby. especiallyyyy when robby's reading at night, glasses perched on the bridge of his nose. dennis promptly snatches the book and sets it aside to crawl into his lap, nuzzling at his neck and jaw, pulling back and groaning robbyyy. you look so fucking cute in those stupid fucking glasses I'm gonna die.
i like to think about dennis and robby being together so long that they start to pick up mannerisms from one another. dennis starts to rub at the back of his neck when he's nervous and cross his arms when he's listening to someone speak. robby starts to scrunch his nose when he's disgusted and tilt his head when he's confused by something.
i especially like to think about dennis picking up a little yiddish from robby. the first time "oy gevalt" comes out of his mouth, it feels so natural that he doesn't even think about it, but trinity gives him a knowing look. the first time dennis unthinkingly describes something as "farkakte," dana rolls her eyes and makes a comment about physically separating him from robby. when dennis mutters something about princess being a "yenta," it feeds the rumor mill for days.
for robby, it's the greatest thing in the world. nobody he's ever dated has really stuck around to pick up any of his yiddish phrases, and hearing them from dennis reminds him so terribly of home, of childhood, of dinners with his bubbe and zayde. every time dennis tells trinity to stop kvetching, or tells a med student to do something with chutzpah, or complains about schlepping somewhere, robby wants to wrap him up in his arms and never let him go.
robby gets crazy cuteness aggression over dennis and I know it's been said but I'm gonna say it again. he's grabbing that poor boy's face and smacking kisses all over it, so infatuated it's almost frustrating. goddamn it, den, how are you real????
Doctor Dennis always has my heart but I do have a soft spot for Dennis who is so spoiled by Robby that he literally only has a random job just to be busy while Robby is working.
Dennis is out there making fudge for $12 an hour while Robby is at work. Dennis isn’t even totally aware of when payday is because he doesn’t ever check his bank account, Robby has it covered.
That also means that the second anyone is mean to Dennis, he’s quitting on the spot. Whether it’s because Robby comes in and makes him quit because someone made him cry the night before, or maybe Dennis just gets bored enough at that job.
At one point Dennis becomes a cleaner for the ER but has to quit because Robby almost kills a patient or maybe Park the Shark, for being rude to him. Dennis works in the coffee shop in the hospital but Dana has to “fire” him herself because Robby disappears every 20 minutes and she always has to find him in the coffee shop.
Idk just spoiled Dennis not having to work but wanting to do something with his time. He’s skilled at everything now because he’s been in that field of work for two weeks one time. He has the skill to build a pool in their backyard, a gazebo, bake anything he wants, and plant the most fragile plants that thrive under his care.
Robby is just so in love and adds 1k to his bank account every other day, Dennis doesn’t even touch the money he makes himself.
Also don’t forget Dennis had a horrible childhood, that plays into it somehow.
Dennis and Robby have been together 5 months now. If you ask Trinity, they’ve been together for a year and two days but Dennis only counts the “dating” from the time that Robby sat down at the bar with him with the other dayshift crew all around and asked Dennis if he wanted to go see a movie after he finished his drink.
Anything before that was just a weird codependency, respect, loyalty, and sexual tension filled bond with his boss.
It happened quietly but nobody was surprised much when one day Robby and Dennis came in together, Robby kissing Dennis on the forehead before going their separate ways.
Not much has changed in the ER. Robby’s been calmer since his sabbatical and subsequential therapy. He made rounds and apologized. Invited Dana and Jack over to apologize and to give them written permission to forcibly admit him if he ever gets that bad again.
It wasn’t unusual to see Dennis on the phone during Robby’s shortened-to-a-month-sabbatical. Blushing while texting or looking a little forlorn when his phone wouldn’t vibrate for a couple hours. Jack caught Robby with bed head on FaceTime with Dennis one time when shift change was happening.
The whole ER got to see Robby slowly go back to being the slightly goofy, kind, mostlyyyyy laid back man that he was before Adamson passed. Of course, they would never get that version totally back. He has more demons than 5 people his age combined, but he didn’t let it overtake him now.
Here’s where the problem lies. One day, Jack comes in for his shift at 6:15pm. He always gets there early, still always wanting to be there for the bad days, to let Robby vent to him if he needs. Or Dana, Samira…anyone really.
Jack tracks down Dana at the hub, talks to her for a bit. It’s been an okay day, she reports. Six or so traumas but so far everyone is doing okay, all sent up to different floors already. All the docs are keeping up and her nurses are in good moods.
Robby’s walking towards Jack with an easy-going smile. He goes to hug Jack, as has become their normal now.
Then,
“Woah, Woah! Robby!”
“Hula Hoop! Hula Hoop!”
Two different voices yell out, both are nurses passing a room down the hallway from them. Jack has good instincts and reflexes. He’s military, did some helping out for SWAT, he does his yoga and his gym, all that stuff.
But Robby flips around and is half way to the room before Jack even takes a step. It’s like Robby knows in his brain who’s in trouble before his eyes see it.
Jack and Dana are right behind Robby as he swings the door open. Jack is terrified. He’s never been this scared since he got back from his tour with the military, since he got the call about his wife.
He’s never been this scared of Robby.
It’s Dennis. There’s so much blood on the ground. Dennis is on the ground, he’s coughing up blood, trying to fight off the 250 pound guy on top of him with one hand. Dennis’s face is absolutely covered in blood, from his nose and from a gash on his cheekbone.
Robby already has the guys back of the neck in one hand before Dennis can cough again. One handed, Robby tosses the asshole into the wall, where the patient bounces off.
Robby turns his back completely to the patient before anyone even grabs the guy. Like Robby is so sure he isn’t a problem anymore, because he isn’t one to Dennis anymore.
Jack goes to pounce on the guy when a blur rushes past him and then a 5”4’ lesbian is on top of the patient and holding him down with two fists in his shirt.
“Are you fucking kidding me, you’re kidding me right? I’ll kill you, I’ll fucking kill you, you piece of shit. Touch my fucking huckleberry, you’re kidding right?” Trinity is spitting out, shaking with rage.
Ahmed and Langdon comes in a second later and stands guard while Trinity lets her anger out. Dana and Jack drop to Dennis’s side, where Robby is pushing Dennis onto his side to help him keep the blood out of his throat.
“It’s okay baby, it’s okay, you’re good,” he’s whispering out and Jack knows to take over the more medical part now.
Gestures for Dana to go get a bed. Jack keeps a hard eye on Robby, ready to tackle his best friend into the ground when Robby realizes he can turn his anger onto the patient. Jack wouldn’t give a shit personally if the guy left bloodier than he came in, but after the last time someone got assaulted and Robby took his own action, he almost got his license taken away.
It never comes though, that dark look and violent advance that Jack expects.
No. Robby stays right there, doesn’t even look when the patient yells out in anger from Langdon stabbing him with a syringe full of a sedative.
Robby’s holding the side of Dennis’s head in his hand, tilting it a little bit towards the floor and just staring into Dennis’s eyes. His eyes drift to the blood pooling out of his face every few seconds.
Dana rushes in, McKay on her heels both lowering a bed as far as it goes.
Jack puts a hand on Robby’s shoulder.
Whispers, “Brother, we got to get him on the bed, help us,” because if Robby had a purpose right there when Dennis needs him, then he won’t spin around on the unconscious patient. Ex-patient. He spins around to Lena who just came in, “transfer that guy to presby. Now.”
She leaves quickly with a quick nod, surely already on her way to call Presby and grab one of the EMT’s.
Dana, Jack, McKay, and Robby help Dennis on the gurney. Robby seems scared to touch him, he keeps one hand on Dennis’s head and one on his hand. He’s still whispering but they can’t hear it well.
Dana and Jack both give a quick breath of relief when Dennis opens his eyes and mutters a “hi,” to Robby. Conscious and talking is better than nothing.
They rush him to a trauma room where Jack and McKay take the lead, Robby stays near Dennis’s head and just brushes a thumb over his neck. He suctions blood out of Dennis’s mouth every couple of seconds.
Jack gets a good look and it turns out to be a chunk of his inner mouth bitten real good, probably from a punch that made Dennis clench down.
They rush him to X-Ray, MRI, literally every test that is feasible for him. He’s got a broken cheekbone, nose, three fingers, and some stitches in his cheek and arm. Bruises everywhere.
Dana and Jack keep an eye on Robby the whole time, ready for him to blow up. Bad. They know it’s coming. Hell, Robby put the last guy who assaulted a doctor in a chokehold until he passed out. And that was just one slap to Trinity’s cheek.
Jack takes a sweep around the floor once they get Dennis situated in a room and finds the hospital filled to the brim with staff. Night shift is taking over patients, finding new ones.
The nurses are running room to room, janitors are scrubbing the walls.
The day shift are all leaning against the hub, some charting what they need to.
Every single person in there though looks up every 10 seconds to stare at Robby. They know the anger he can have, the protectiveness he has that boils over into indescribable rage.
Trinity is staring at the room Dennis got moved to, not blinking. Mel is next to her, talking to her even though she doesn’t respond.
An hour later, Jack is just finishing checking Dennis’s vitals (a poor attempt of keeping tabs on Robby) when it happens, finally.
Robby blinks and he sits back in the chair.
He looks around, catches Jack’s eye and blinks again frantically. He slowly lets go of Dennis’s hand, who immediately mumbles something in his sleep.
“Brother, let’s just sit down. I’ll bring you food, whatever you need,” Jack immediately starts.
Robby doesn’t even hear him, Jack can tell. Robby slowly walks right past Jack and — oh god.
It’s Gloria. In the hub, talking to Dana quietly. This is it.
Robby opens the door and it’s like the music just got cut off at a party. It’s silence, even most of the patients seem to know on a cellular level that something is happening.
Night shift spins around, nurses slowly stop walking, day shift latches their gaze on Robby immediately, no pretending that they’re not staring.
“Dr. Robinavitch, why am I just now hearing one of our own has been admitted?” Gloria asks loudly, and with concern even Jack has to admit.
Dana shakes her head at Gloria, no, no, no you do not want to touch this right now she’s clearly saying with her eyes.
Jack rushes up to Robby, ready to direct him somewhere else but Robby walks right past Gloria. Right past everyone, to the lockers.
It’s off-putting. There’s no shaking, no death glares, nothing. Robby is just walking like he’s on the beach right now. Or in a trance state.
Jack and Dana stare at each other, blink. Langdon goes to move, to talk to Robby.
Then he comes back and walks up to Gloria, his backpack and jacket, and a couple of pictures in his hand.
Everyone holds their breath.
“I’m done, Gloria. I quit.” And then he walks right over to Dana. Jack sees the pictures now, it’s the ones from Robby’s locker. A picture of Dennis in Robby’s kitchen. A picture of the entire day shift from Robby’s welcome back party. A picture of Jake. One of Jack and Dana. One of Trinity laughing with Samira.
He picks up the phone there for emergencies only and he dials a number. Waits a second while it rings, ignores Gloria who is valiantly trying to get Robby to speak with her.
“Hello, this is Dr. Robinavitch with PTMC. Can we get one of your deputies down here to escort a patient?”
“Wait, what? No, no. If Robby’s gone, I’m gone. Hell no,” and Trinity is quickly walking to her locker.
A pause.
Mel follows, staring at the ground. Langdon immediately after her. Dana turns her wide eyes gaze back to Jack. He sees that Dana is about two people away from following them right now.
A hand pats Jack’s shoulder, then Jesse is walking to his locker. That’s the cue for the nurses. The full hub is now dwindling down to people going to grab their bags. Nurses figuring out who’s staying to make sure patients still get the care they need or where they can be transferred.
“Michael! We are not having a riot happen, let’s go talk, now!”
Robby hangs up the phone, pats Trinity’s shoulder who is now standing next to him with hers and Dennis’s bags.
“Gloria. I’m done talking, we talked last week when Perlah had to report inappropriate touching, we talked the day before when Langdon had that woman threaten to kill him, we talked when Emma got bit, we talked when Trinity got slapped, we talked when Samira got spit on. And that is just the day shift and just this month,”
“The budget-“
“The budget is going to get someone killed. The budget paid for you and your administration buddies to go to Hawaii for a conference. The budget will be fine now that I’m gone.”
“You’re putting all of these patients in danger,”
“Gloria. It’s Dennis. I’m done. Get on your phone now, order some emergency buttons for everybody on the staff here, get a construction team here now to open these rooms up more to be able to hear and see our staff, hire an entire security team. Now. Or I’m walking and I won’t be back.”
“And I think you won’t have any doctors at all,” Dana says after that. Jack clears his throat.
“Yeah, Gloria. I think this is it. I’ll stay to transfer these patients but I’ll be joining Robby after that,”
Gloria looks around with her with a look of panic that Jack has never seen from her.
“I can’t, without the board-“
“Jack, will you go get Dennis unhooked, please and thank you. Trinity, go take his stuff to my car?” And Robby walks away.
The entire thing was so calm. Eerily calm. The calmest Robby has been. He’s never been more sure of anything.
“Okay!” Gloria spits out, and she pulls out her phone.
“Send me screenshots of receipts for everything I requested and that’s when we’ll be back,” Robby says, and everyone who has their bags nods their head. Is telling Robby and Trinity to keep them updated on Dennis and when they’ll back to work. Maybe they’ll get a day off before Gloria orders everything.
“Thanks, Dr. Robby,” Emma whispers out before leaving herself.
Jack knew this was a long time coming. He just never thought it would be so calm.
(Idk dude this is just something I thought about. Like Dennis getting attacked crazy style and everyone being scared as hell bc Robby is nuts over his staff but even more insane about Dennis. But then they’re even more scared and confused when Robby is calmer than he’s ever been. This job isn’t worth his love’s health. He’s not going to make Dennis quit but he’s sure that Dennis won’t want to work there if Robby is gone. Robby is very surprised to see how many people follow him out though)
more sleazy rockstar robby and controversially young fan-turned-boyfriend dennis thoughts...
robby is very proud of his pretty little boyfriend, and wants to stake an official claim in the eyes of the public. he doesnt do instagram or social media, so he finds another way. how better to launch his relationship than with the cover of his new album?
he ends up sitting with dennis for hours, moving his boy around in his lap however he wants, showing off different body parts and testing new positions- all while dennis fights off a throbbing boner. he gets uncontrollably horny when robby treats him like a possession, just another prize he's snatched up during his record breaking career. dennis is happy to be one of robby's trophies.
eventually, robby settles on an image. its a mirror of the pose he'd coaxed (or, slightly forced) the younger man into in their first meeting, when robby had invited his fan backstage and had ended up fucking him until he cried and clung to his big hairy arms and chest for comfort.
in the image, dennis is sat on robby's lap as robby acts as though he's teaching dennis guitar chords, hands over his on the strings. the body of the guitar hides the men's crotches from view, but there's little doubt that both men are hard and leaking. aside from the guitar, theyre both naked.
their heads are cropped out, but any fan of robby's is deeply familiar with the dark hair and wide belly he sports, given he plays most shows shirtless. what's new is the pale, hicky-ridden skin of the other man nestled on top of him. the fans go berserk with speculation- who was this young lover and new muse of one of the world's most famous rockstars?
they'll find out soon enough when robby decides dennis should be on his arm wherever he goes. what the fans don't know (despite the fact the new album cover highly suggests it) is that each and every new song released had this pretty little twenty something year old either sat on his cock or sucking his cock as robby recorded them.
dennis is such a good boy, such a dedicated fan. of course he deserves to be the cover art.
