Puzzle of Koalasâ Unusually Deep Voices Solved: A Very Special Organ
The scientists harvested body parts from wild koalas that had been humanely euthanized for other reasons. When scientists looked at the voice boxes of male koalas, they found their vocal cords werenât large enough to create the animalsâ extremely low-pitched mating bellows. But further examination revealed a second, much larger pair of vocal folds located outside of the larynx, where the oral and nasal cavities connect.
Charlton and his colleagues used a combination of physical, video, and acoustic analyses to demonstrate that the newly discovered vocal folds outside of the larynx are capable of producing extremely low-pitched sound as the koala inhales air through its nostrils. (Read more about koalas in National Geographic magazine.)
Itâs the first evidence in a land-dwelling mammal of an organ other than the larynx that is devoted to producing sound.
The only other example of a specialized sound-producing organ in mammals that is independent of the larynx is the phonic lips that toothed whales use to generate echolocationâor the natural sonar that helps them find prey, said Charlton, whose study is published in the journal Current Biology.
But Charlton and colleagues plan to keep looking to find other animals with such low voices.

So theyâre saying that the Carrera GT is too dangerous to be on the road on CNN now? Wow.
The Carrera GT is one of the last cars with a classic supercar setup i.e. N/A, RWD, manual transmission, mid-engined and a few driving aids.
Is it dangerous? Prima facie yes, but this is the...

MY PURIFIED BOTTLED WATER: Reverse Osmosis
Last night, I bought a bottled water from my schoolâs cafeteria. The ingredient section of the label reads: âPurified by Reverse Osmosisâ. I returned to my dorm room wondering in my head what reverse osmosis meant. I did make a good guess but I wondered why reverse osmosis would be useful and why it is possible.Â
So heres what I found out about reverse osmosis.Â
Reverse Osmosis is a separation process that uses pressure to force a solvent (in this case, water) through a semi-permeable membrane which retains the contaminants on one side and allows the pure solvent to pass to the other side. Like the name implies it is âReverseâ of the normal osmosis (movement of solvents from a low solute concentration to higher solute concentration). The pressure/ force applied has to exceed the osmotic pressure in order to move solvent from a region of high solute concentration to a region of low solute concentration through a semi-permeable membrane.
Apparently Reverse Osmosis is useful in so many different systems such as : Green houses, Hemodialysis, Kidney Dialysis, Ice-making,âŠand a lot more. Next time youâre holding a bottled water, I hope you value the reverse osmosis technique.
A device that mimics the action of the human heart has been used to pump urine into a microbial fuel cell, which could power âEcoBotsâ that convert the waste into electricity. These robots, created in the UK, have previously been powered by dead flies, rotten products and sludge. Read more: http://bit.ly/HGCSll via Discovery News

This flyer circulated around Dallas prior to President John F. Kennedyâs arrival, claiming he was wanted for treason for âBetraying the Constitutionâ and for giving âsupport and encouragement to the Communist inspired racial riots,â among other supposed violations.
In their new book,âDallas 1963â University of Texas journalism professor Bill Minutaglio and writer Steven L. Davis document the hatred, hysteria and fear that culminated in JFKâs assassination 50 years ago. Read an excerpt and see archival JFK photographs.
