Researchers at Cardiff University and Kings College London identified cells which causes the airways to narrow when triggered by irritants like pollution.Drugs already exist which can deactivate these cells. They are known as Calcilytics and are used to treat people with osteoporosis. The researchers are hopeful that in the future asthmatics could take Calcilytics to prevent an attack ever happening and ending the need to constantly carry an inhaler.
Over the course of the past years some great TED talks have appeared from either TED.com conferences, TEDMED or the independent TEDx’s all over the world. Great knowledge, emotion, science and ideas have been spread. Some of them changed doctors, nurse and even patients. Premed Stories: What's your Why??
During my sophomore year of college while I was sitting in the library taking a break from studying, I came across a video called “The Secret to Success” by Eric Thomas (otherwise known as ET) that changed my life. As I put on my headphones and turned up the volume, I could feel the fiery passion from ET’s words reach through the screen and light a fire within me. I asked myself, what is it that motivates me to study harder when I feel like giving up? I could not come up with an answer at first. I thought I knew the reason why I wanted to go to medical school, but it was not until that day that I realized the motivation it was going to take to get me there.
I sat back in my chair and thought of my father who had a great job working for the World Health Organization in Zimbabwe before choosing to bring our family to the United States. My father gave up his well-paid job with its benefits to work as a home healthcare-giver once arriving in this country. He worked harder and was paid less but he chose that life so his children could have a better future. I thought of all of my friends who never were given this opportunity. That’s what motivated me to push myself to fulfill my dream of becoming a physician. I am inspired to be the best that I can be so that one day I can provide for my family and also give back to my father after all that he sacrificed for me. Read more...

Physicians stand on the shoulders of some very brilliant people
Think for a second about the most treasured drug or device in your medical bag.  Or about the procedure you find most appealing, the disease or injury you most enjoy treating. Personally, I really enjoy doing lumbar punctures, opening abscesses, placing IO lines and applying splints. And because I’m an emergency physician, I am duty bound to say that I love to intubate … and I do.
I also enjoy doing nerve blocks, whether dental, regional or digital. In fact, I did my own digital block on my very painful great toe, wherein there was an ingrown nail. I endured it for about one month, believe it or not, but ultimately I was too cheap to go to my doctor or any other doctor. So I sat down in my bathroom with my wife and kids in attendance. Just before I started, I said, “I don’t think I can do this to myself!”  To which my insulin-dependent son, Seth, replied “Are you kidding me?”  The shame worked and the needle and bupivicaine left my toe tingling for at least 12 hours. Congratulations! You are about to embark upon an exciting, life-altering experience, one you will never forget. You are about to join an elite group of people who will now be your peers going forward.
You will be continually fascinated, and not a single day will go by from now until you retire that you aren’t challenged by something you have never encountered before. You will be solving problems and thinking, using your brain for the good of your fellow human beings.
It will be difficult though. Some days you will scream, some days you will cry, some days you will want to crawl under the covers and never get out of bed.
