after racing their bikes down the boardwalk, y/n and jake landed at a neon themed ice cream shop.
âyou know you really didnât need to buy me shorts.â y/n smiled, locking her bike to the bike-stand out front.
âyes i did. I am quite the gentleman.â jake teased, doing the same.
âokay. important question.â she stated, dusting her hands off on the front of her new shorts. jake swallowed a lump in his throat.
"yes?" he asked, nervously.
"what ice cream flavor are you going to get?"
jake let out a breath he didn't know he was holding in, for some reason she made him so nervous.
"hmmm. probably something basic like dark chocolate or vanilla. what about you?" he held the door open for her as they made their way inside.
y/n's eyes immediately lit up at the sight of the interior that she barely had time to register his answer.
"wait a minute- all of this and you choose chocolate or vanilla?? LAMEEEEE." y/n motioned towards the chalkboard sign reading all of the shop's flavors, including fruity pebbles, s'mores, peach, cinnamon roll, and blueberry. jake's lips curled into a frown of disgust.
"there's no way you're actually going to order one of those..."
"you're right. i was thinking of getting a few flavors actually." y/n smirked.
"you have interesting taste to say the least." jake teased, crossing his arms.
"and i think you have boring taste." she retorted.
"oh come on, you're not boring." he laughed, earning a hit on the arm from y/n.
"come on let's order, weirdo."
the pair walked towards the counter, y/n ordered a scoop of peach and fruity pebbles ice cream, topped with gummy bears. jake on the other hand, ordered double chocolate with chocolate sprinkles (y/n insisted he add the sprinkles).
they sat next to each other at the high table against the wall of the shop, enjoying their ice cream together.
"hows the peach and fruity pebble combo?" jake asked.
"i sense judgement in your tone." y/n squinted her eyes.
"no judgement here! just curiosity."
"it's actually very good. it tastes like rainbows and joy, something you wouldn't know anything about." she grinned, eating a gummy bear.
"is that right? well my double chocolate is great thanks for asking."
"only because i added sprinkles to it."
"fair point, i do enjoy the sprinkle addition."
"i knew you would."
they sat in silence for a moment, before jake made an observation.
"your lips look unusually pink."
"and why are you staring at my lips????" y/n furrowed her brows, her cheeks now tinted pink out of embarrassment.
"because they're borderline orange!!! look!" jake pulled out his phone and took a photo of her, then flipping it around to show her.
"oh my god you were right. this is crazy." y/n wet a napkin with her tongue and started rubbing the ice cream off her lips but was unsuccessful.
"you might as well leave it. i think you've turned into a fruity pebble now." jake offered a sympathetic smile.
"im content with that." she shrugged.
after finishing their ice cream, jake and y/n headed back outside to unlock their bikes before heading home.
âdo you wanna race?â jake smirked, tightening his grip on the bikeâs handlebars.
âoh youâre very sure of yourself.â y/n laughed.
âam i?â
âwell thereâs only one way to find outâŚâ she smirked.
âi guess youâre right. on the count of three?â
âyup.â
the pair slowed down to a stop and began counting to three in sync. the second they reached three they sped off into the direction of the bike rental shop.

y/n took off her playa bowls hat and brushed her fingers through her hair in the bathroom mirror. it was 11:56, so her shift was basically over, meaning jake would be here momentarily. she reapplied her lip gloss and fiddled with her jewelry nervously.
y/n was aware it was dumb to be so nervous, but she couldnât help but worry about how she might act around jake now that she realized she has a crush on him. instead of finding him stupid and annoying, she was probably going to be giggling and kicking her feet the entire hangout which was her worst nightmare.
megan and yunjin werenât working today, just these two other girls who y/n wasnât really close with because the were never scheduled together. since it was a pretty slow shift, y/n took the liberty of clocking out a few minutes early to get ready. she took off her jean shorts in the bathroom and changed into a long white skirt because the shorts started feeling like they were cutting off her circulation. she slipped on a pink shirt over her bikini top, and put some sunscreen on before heading out.
just as she walked out of the bathroom and waved goodbye to her coworkers, the bell attached to the door rang, revealing none other than jake. y/nâs breath hitched in her throat with zero hesitation. why was she this down bad for a frat guy.
little did she know, jake had the same reaction seeing the way she tossed her hair over her shoulder as she opened the door. he looked star struck as she walked towards him, nervously smiling.
âhi.â he breathed, not blinking.
âhello?â y/n laughed, trying to pull attention away from her nerves.
âare you ready to go?â he asked, brushing his hair back.
âyes!â she replied, a little too quickly as she took the opportunity to walk ahead of him to try and hide the blush on her cheeks.
jake followed her with zero hesitation and the pair started walking side-by-side down the boardwalk.
"so...where should we go?" y/n asked.
"i was thinking we could rent bikes and get ice cream? maybe go shopping?" he suggested, hands in his pockets.
"oh great. am i gonna get bike riding lessons now?" y/n sighed.
"YOU CAN'T RIDE A BIKE?" jake gasped.
"NO- I CAN- I JUST-"

"im just flattered you thought of me." he smirked, y/n rolling her eyes as she turned away from him, secretly smiling.
"lets just get the basic nonchalant ones." y/n pointed towards two red bikes by the door.
"works for me!"
"issue is im in a skirt so riding a bike does feel like a challenge." y/n crossed her arms.
"you waited until now to realize that?"
"no i knew the whole time i just figured it was an issue for later." she shrugged.
"okay but now its later. what are you gonna do?" jake raised his eyebrows.
"i have shorts in my bag i could change into but they're so uncomfortable."
"right okay we're buying you shorts." jake declared, already looking outside the window of the bike shop to see the nearest clothing stores.

"are you expecting us to believe that up until now you were just joking?" yunjin asked.
"yeah i thought we all knew you wanted that australian cookie bad." megan added.

"YOU DONT GET IT. you werent there guys..." jake defended himself.
"thank god!" niki rolled his eyes. "watching you attempt to flirt at playa was embarrassing enough."
"you're just mad i pull and you cant" jake shrugged.
"see this is why heeseung was frat president instead of you dude you're irritating." niki crossed his arms.
"im not gonna confirm or deny that." heeseung threw his arms up in defeat.

âyeah right.â she replied, joking around.
âno Iâm serious y/n.â jake stepped closer to her.
âokay...?â y/n shrugged, unsure of what to say.
âso whatâs the answer?â jake pursed his lips.
âdude we just met like three days ago-â
âand? thatâs how it works! you meet people, you like them, you go on a date, you fall in love get married-â
âoh so weâre going to get married?â y/n raised her eyebrows.
âno thatâs not what I meant.â he sighed. âI just meant that if we go on a date then we can get to know each other better.â
the two stared at each other for a moment.
âIâm putting a pin in this conversation.â y/n stated.
âwhat? no! thatâs not how this works you canât do that!â
âJAKE I PINNED IT.â she said, starting to walk back to the shore, leaving him alone with his surfboard.
âsheâll unpin it.â he whispered to himself once sheâd gone. âsheâll definitely unpin it.â
"are you coming or not? you've gotta hold up your end of the trade!" y/n called out to him.
"coming!" he wiped the water off his face and started to follow her back to playa bowls. luckily playa was just down the boardwalk so it was only a brisk walk away. plus, the bright sunlight made sure to dry them off before getting to work.
once inside, y/n set up the ingredients on the playa counter as jake placed his surfboard in the back closet.
âokay are you ready for your nutella bowl lesson?â y/n asked, motioning to the counter.
"indeed i am. whatâs the first step?" jake asked, stepping towards her and cracking his knuckles.
"so we have to start by putting granola along the bottom of the bowl- do you think you can handle that?" y/n teased, handing him the granola.
"of course ma'am." he saluted.
"please don't call me ma'am." y/n sighed.
"okay y/n here i go!" he carefully leaned over the counter and sprinkled granola along the bottom of the bowl before stepping back to admire his work. "voila!"
"very good! now you have to add the acai. just scoop it out of the blender, fill it quite generously but make sure to leave room for toppings. trust me I fucked that up a lot during training and my bowls were overflowing. please learn from my mistakes.â y/n instructed.
jake was surprisingly focused, y/n couldn't help but sit back and smile at his determination.
"is this a good amount?"
"yes now you need to do the bananas... this is kinda where you have to be very precise- you need to slice them evenly and place them along the edge." y/n passed him a knife and a peeled banana.
jake bent over the counter again, eye level with the banana on the cutting board. he began to very slowly make cuts in the banana as evenly as he could.
âSHIT!â he suddenly yelled, dropping the knife and gripping his finger.
âwhat? are you okay!?!â y/n asked, startled.
jake didnât say anything, just kept a tight grip on his finger with his eyes glued shut.
âjake did you cut your finger?? is it bleeding??â y/n went up to him and grabbed his hand, forcing it open to reveal his finger. as she did so, a smirk appeared across jakeâs face as his unscathed finger wiggled in her face.
âHA!â he yelled.
âARE YOU SERIOUS? WHATâS YOUR PROBLEM???â y/n yelled at him, smacking his arm while he kept laughing.
âwere you worried about me?â he teased, stepping closer. their height different suddenly becoming noticeable as he towered over her.
âyou piss me off.â y/n crossed her arms, glaring at him.

jake smiled and held back a laugh, instead choosing to stand there silently just looking at her.

jake bit back a smile as he watched her pull her hair back and concentrate on fixing his shitty banana slicing. maybe he shouldnât be coming on so strong, and maybe he shouldnât be nonstop flirting with her, but he couldnât help it.
âOW.â y/n whispered under her breath, pulling her hand away from the cutting board and shaking it off.
âare you okay?â jake snapped out of his daze.

"why did i agree to this." y/n asked, looking towards the waves crashing at the shore.
"because its fun! and afterwards you're going to teach me how to make your signature nutella bowl so its a fair trade!" jake grinned, heading out to the water.
y/n sighed as she followed him, clutching her surfboard. it wasn't actually her surfboard, it was jake's old one, a faded turquoise color with the remnants of wax plastered across it.
"okay so do you know how to swim?" jake asked, genuinely.
"are you being serious?"
"yes?" he raised his eyebrows.
"yes jake i can swim???" y/n clarified.
"great! we're already halfway there!" he grinned. "i think we're going to start with some basic paddling first so let's get out to about waist-deep."
jake took his surfboard from her as y/n followed him into the water. the two swam in silence until they reached the ideal depth.
"the water's actually really nice today." y/n commented, bending down to wet her hair.
"yeah, totally." he mindlessly stared at her as she floated on her back, eyes closed, the smell of her sunscreen and perfume filling the air.
"are we gonna start?" she suddenly asked, breaking his focus as she sat up.
"yes! you're gonna get on the surfboard and lay on your stomach and start paddling. i'll hold you in place so you can get the hang of it then let you free- kind of like teaching someone how to ride a bike!"
"except this time you're sending me out to sea where i could just never come back!" y/n added.
"nah some boat would probably find you. someday." he smirked, earning a splash of water to the face from y/n. "hey!" he glared before breaking out into a smile. "alright get on it's time to lock in."
y/n hoisted herself up onto the surfboard as jake held it steady, making an extra effort that the board stay as still as possible.
"okay now lay on your stomach and just start paddling." jake helped.
y/n did as she was told, and started splashing jake with insane amounts of water as he held the board behind her.
"WOAH- OKAY- SO- YOU'VE GOT IT- Y/N STOP!" he shouted, progressively getting soaked as y/n just laughed.
"sorry i didn't quite get that what did you say-" y/n teased, about to splash him even more.
"I'LL LET GO OF THE SURFBOARD." jake threatened, eyebrows raised.
"YOU WOULDNT." the two were now in a sort of stare-off, just glaring at each other and furrowing their brows.
"oh i would." jake teased.
"fine." she gave in, "what's next?" y/n asked, sitting up on the board.
"now we've gotta practice the pop-up- it's where you go from laying on your stomach to standing upright." jake explained.
"are we sure i'm ready for that?" y/n asked, clearly a bit nervous.
"yeah i'll be holding onto you the whole time. i promise i wouldn't let you drown." he replied sincerely. y/n just smiled at him silently for a moment before locking in.
"okay i'm ready!" she declared.
"so it's sort of like a push up- or like in yoga when you do a plank into a downward dog?"
"right...yes...in yoga..." y/n laughed.
"well of course. first just go from your stomach to a seal-like position with your chest up." jake explained, y/n following along. "good! now you've gotta get on your feet, one at a time- wow it's like you're a professional already!" he clapped, not realizing he had let go of the surfboard that y/n was now hesitantly standing on.
"JAKE I SWEAR TO GOD." y/n yelled the second he let go.
"what? OH-" he quickly grabbed the sides of the board again. "my fault on that one."
"yeah. BUT LOOK IM STANDING!" she smiled.
"you are!" jake looked up at her, grinning, and y/n slowly glanced over to meet his gaze and gave him a thumbs up. of course, she was still careful not to move too suddenly in case she lost her balance. the two shared a few seconds of excitement before snapping back to reality.
it was as if she suddenly remembered she was (sort of) standing on water, and y/nâs legs immediately began to wobble, her eyes shifting to look at her feet and the water surrounding her. jake was quick to intervene.
"you're okay! just slowly try and bend down and get back-"
splash.
"right yeah or i guess you could just give up." jake laughed as she landed in the water. "are you alright?" he eventually called when her head resurfaced.
"i fell." she announced, her eyes glued shut, burning from the saltwater.
"i noticed."
"i don't think i like surfing."
"but you didn't even actually surf. you just stood on a board. that's not the same thing!" jake tried to defend his favorite water-sport as y/n wrung her wet hair out over the board.
"okay then i dont like standing on a board!"
"which means you could like surfing." jake pointed out.
"you annoy me." y/n responded after a beat of silence, glaring at him.
"do i?" he teased.
"i'll splash you again." y/n threatened.

"alright let's go to the kitchen I'm going to give you a tour." she stood up, clutching her note pad and pen. he smiled as he got up to follow her, it felt like he was nailing this.
as y/n led him behind the counter to the pantry he chose to continue teasing her.
"oh so this is where your friends hide and gossip about me?" he commented, poking his head in the pantry and looking around.
"yeah and that's where your friends mock you and your pickup lines." she retorted, motioning to the ordering station.
"toosh." he said, earning a slight smile from y/n before she continued the tour.
"we don't actually have a break room but we usually just sit at the back two tables or hangout in the pantry as you so kindly pointed out." she smiled, guiding him towards the pickup station. "that's kind of it. we keep all the ingredients in the pantry and we usually make everything behind the counter. do you have any questions for me?"
he pondered for a moment.
"do you like surfing?" he asked.
"okay when I asked if you had questions, i meant ones pertaining to the job." she sighed.
"okay y/n, when you are not working, do you enjoy surfing?" he repeated.
"and that question still doesn't pertain to the job!" she replied.

usually at work, y/n kept herself busy by fiddling around with the work playlist, reorganizing shelves, and secretly playing games on her phone or scrolling through tik tok. today however, she was too nervous and kept pacing back and forth, unable to take her eyes off of the door for too long. she'd met this guy once, he ordered the stupidest drink on the menu, and then came back looking for her the next day. allegedly. she was just kinda entertained by the whole situation, plus he was cute.
y/n settled for playing games in the kitchen with megan and yunjin to pass the time. currently they were tossing blueberries at each other and trying to catch it in their mouths. she'd only been able to catch two, and now there were just a bunch of blueberries on the floor. at least that gave her another thing to do later.
suddenly the all too familiar bells rang, and y/n practically sprinted to the counter to see who it was.
as expected, three boys stood by the ordering station all wearing a slightly awkward expression.
"hey." jake cleared his throat, nervously smiling.
y/n could see his two friends, heeseung and niki, trying their best not to laugh behind him.
"hello again. what can i get for you today?" y/n smiled, pretending like this was any other customer.
"would you hate me if i said i wanted a ding repair?" he asked.
"yes. 1000% yes. i will kick you out of the store." y/n said with zero hesitation.
"noted. what would you recommend?" jake took a step forward and leaned against the counter, not breaking eye contact. y/n suddenly felt nervous, heeseung and niki exchanged glances with their eyebrows raised.
"bro this is like in middle school when you ask your crush for a hug after recess-" megan whispered, yunjin quickly shushing her. the two of them were hidden in the pantry, but peeking through the doorway to eavesdrop.
"well i dont actually order any of the drinks here. i usually like the acai bowls." y/n shrugged.
"ah. i've never had one." jake glanced at the menu.
"really? you come to an acai bowl place just for their juices? why not go to a juice place?" y/n laughed.
"their workers aren't as cute."
heeseung and niki immediately burst out laughing behind him, clutching each other to try and keep it together. y/n closed her eyes, stifling a laugh.
"right of course." she said, watching as his two friends tried to hold back their laughter.
"bro is the rizzler.." niki whispered, heeseung hitting him on the arm.
"can i get a nutella acai bowl then?" jake smiled, trying to ignore heeseung and niki.
"of course. coming right up!" she quickly turned and walked back to the pantry, her eyes widening as she replayed the entire interaction.
"oh so he really wants that cookie." megan whispered the second y/n entered.
"WHAT DO I DO??" y/n whisper-yelled, reaching for the blender.
"i think you make him an acai bowl and then walk back out there and jump over the counter and passionately make out-"
"YUNJIN IM BEING SERIOUS!" y/n hit her on the arm playfully.
"fine okay here's what you do..."

"INSANE RIZZ!" jake grinned proudly.

"right okay..." niki looked at heeseung, clearly not believing him. jake looked at his reflection in the window, fixing his hair and shirt.
"nutella acai bowl for jake!" y/n suddenly called, startling him. he awkwardly leaned against the counter and smiled.
"i was just admiring the nature." jake claimed.
"definitely." y/n laughed.
"can i get one more thing?" he asked, standing up straighter.
"what would you like?" she asked, learning against the counter the way he had previously, and now jake seemed nervous. heeseung and niki were looking away, already embarrassed by whatever jake was about to do.

jake and y/n stared at each other for a while. jake seemed like he had forgotten where he was, just staring into her eyes incredibly down bad. y/n just waited patiently for his response.
"could i get your job application?" jake suddenly broke the silence.
niki slapped a hand to his forehead, heeseung sighed.
"my job application?" y/n asked, confused.
"um- yes! are you guys hiring?" jake questioned, y/n nodded.
"yeah we are um- let me just grab one for you." y/n bent down to the cupboards underneath the counter, mindlessly searching. while she was down there, heeseung and niki immediately started bullying jake.
"WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?" niki mouthed to him silently.
"I DONT KNOW!!" jake mouthed back.
"YOU ARE SO STUPID." heeseung interjected.
y/n abruptly shot up from behind the counter, the three boys jumped and tried to appear natural, smiling at her awkwardly.
"i don't think we have any fresh copies of job applications right now." y/n announced, looking at the three of them suspiciously.
"oh that's okay." jake smiled.
"could i just get your full name and number to write down?" y/n asked casually.
heeseung and niki raised their eyebrows, jake nervously cleared his throat.
"yeah of course-" he reached for a pen and started writing down his information on the sticky note y/n placed in front of him.
y/n snuck a glance back at the pantry, megan and yunjin both giving her a thumbs up. when she looked back, it appeared heeseung and niki were doing the same thing.
"i'll text you about the job." she smiled when he finished writing.
"looking forward to it." jake smiled back, staring at her.
"your acai bowl?" she asked pushing it towards him.
"ah thank you." he grabbed it, lightly brushing her hand. "i never got your name."

"i hope to hear from you soon, y/n." he grinned. "you know- about the job i mean."

jake turned away and headed for the door following heeseung and niki. he took one last look at her and waved as he walked out. she watched as his friends started high-fiving him the second the door shut.
"right so. when are you going to tell him we aren't actually hiring?" megan asked, stepping up to y/n at the counter with yunjin.
"i actually haven't quite thought that far ahead." she furrowed her eyebrows.

after a long morning of surfing, jake, heeseung, and niki stood in the sand attempting to dry their hair off.
"dude did you see me almost wipeout??" niki asked, almost excited about his close encounter with drowning.
"which time?" heeseung laughed, earning an elbow to the rib from niki, jake just laughing at the pair.
"can we go get playa now? ive been meaning to try their new juice flavor." jake interjected.
"what is with you and playa bruh its not that good-" niki rolled his eyes.
"YES IT IS!!!" jake replied defensively.
"alright its not that serious." heeseung said, grabbing his surfboard.
"to me it is..." jake whispered, the trio heading over to the boardwalk where the best acai bowl shop (according to jake) aka playa bowls stood. it was the first trip of many that summer.
meanwhile...
"who the HELL closed last night...i feel like there is nutella on every single surface." yunjin sighed as she continued to wipe down the counters and shelves.
"im not complaining!" y/n smiled, licking nutella off of the tip of her finger.
"I AM! bruh it looks like i have skidmarks all over me.." megan frowned, but the other two girls just burst out laughing.
"lord okay im going to head back up to the register- you guys have fun back here!" y/n gave them a thumbs up as she left the supply pantry and made her way to the order station. she grabbed her phone to turn on her work playlist before she noticed three guys heading towards the shop. she put her phone down, lowering the volume of the music over the speakers and put on her best customer service smile.
ding ding! the bell attached the door rang as three boys (all sopping wet it appeared) walked through the shop.
niki and heeseung paired up to look at the menu together, while jake rushed to the counter with his pre-picked order ready to go.
"hi welcome to playa bowls! what can i get for you today?" y/n grinned, adjusting her uniform cap.
jake froze, his gaze fixated on the way the girl's hair fell across her bronzed shoulders, complimenting the orange and pink bathing suit she had on. wow. playa bowls really is a beautiful place... he thought.
y/n noticed the way the boy stood frozen in place.
"are you ready for me to take your order or would you like more time?" she smiled, slightly confused but maintaining her customer service skills. jake blinked back to reality.
"oh- sorry- yes! can i get the ding repair juice please?" jake reached for his wallet.
y/n had to bite back a laugh, already hearing the giggles from the supply pantry.
"one ding repair coming right up! you can just tap to pay on the screen right there and select whether you would like a receipt. can i get a name for the order?"
"jake." he grinned, tapping his card on the screen and selecting the highest tip option simply because he thought she was pretty.
y/n walked back to the supply pantry, giggling.
"NO WAY SOMEONE ORDERED A DING REPAIR-" megan couldn't stop laughing.
"im genuinely crying i hate this job" y/n let out a sigh as she grabbed the ingredients. "at least the guy gave me a 30% tip!"
megan and yunjin gasped.
"WHAT? he must want you or something..." yunjin smirked, taking the blender from y/n's hands.
"wait i have got to see what this dude looks like-" megan speedwalked over to the counter, taking a peek at the guys before returning to the supply pantry. "okay so theres three dudes and they're all hot so-"
"MEGAN! keep your voice down!!" y/n whisper-yelled.
"shouldn't you be taking the other guys' orders y/n?" yunjin questioned, noticing two guys waiting in line by the register.
"SHIT!" y/n rushed back to the counter.
the three guys smirked as they noticed the way she suddenly spawned.
"sorry about that! what can i get for you?" she smiled, tucking her hair behind her ear.
"you're fine!" jake smiled, niki hitting him on the arm.
"dude she wasn't talking to you..." niki whispered.
"hi can I get the kowabunga juice please. and also the beach break?" heeseung ordered, the only member of the trio acting normal.
"yes coming right up! can i get a name for the order?"
"heeseung." he brushed a few droplets of water off his forehead.
"it'll be out in a minute!" y/n grinned and walked back to the supply pantry.
technically, y/n was meant to stay up front but because of the circumstances she kept sneaking back to the pantry to gossip.
"oh so you want her huh." heeseung casually stated once she had left.
"BYE HE TOTALLY DOES!" niki giggled.
"GUYS STOP TALKING SHE IS RIGHT THERE." jake glared at them. "but yes i think shes cute..." he whispered.
"KNEW IT!" heeseung and niki high-fived.
"jake?" y/n suddenly called out, placing his juice on the pick-up counter. the way she said his name made the heat rush to his cheeks, nearly tripping as he walked over to grab his drink.
"thank you so much!" he grinned, pausing to just admire her.
"no problem!" she smiled back, also seeming to linger in his presence.
"order for heeseung!" megan suddenly announced, breaking the tension between the pair. as she placed the drink down she grabbed y/n's hand and brought her back to the pantry, leaving jake and the guys alone.

the airport felt cold and grey as y/n went down the escalator clutching her suitcase and backpack. she never liked airports, it was always crowded and overstimulating. but at least this time the reasoning did bring her joy, a dance competition!
y/n had been a member of her dance studio for a few years now, but sheâd only recently started competing and traveling on her own. It was certainly tough to get used to, but she was just thankful to perform.
as she got off the escalator her eyes scanned the many faces waiting for their family or friends to arrive. some people had signs, some people were just grinning ear to ear waiting to see their person step into their line of sight. while she smiled to herself at the scene, her eyes found a familiar face holding a bouquet of roses.
thereâs no way thatâs him.. she thought. but unfortunately as she drew closer, she watched his smile widen as he looked her dead in the eyes. this cannot be real.
ây/n! surprise!!!â he said, reaching for her hands immediately, y/n hesitantly backing away.
âwhat are you doing here??â she asked, staring at her unrequited love/somewhat bully from high school, yes high school.
âah- I know this must be a shock but I wanted to surprise you! I havenât stopped thinking about you, y/n. I just had to see you!!â he rushed through his words, making his way closer to her as she continued backing away.
âI doubt you really had to.â she said with a deadpan expression earning a laugh from him.
âah you never change y/n.â he smiled.

the two stood silently for a moment.
âwell I came here because I wanted to tell you something y/n. Iâve been thinking about you for months and I canât believe how things ended between us! I need closure. so i can move on with my life andâŚother stuff!â he extended the bouquet of flowers, almost as a peace offering.
y/n stared at him in utter disbelief.
âyeah okay... âhow things endedâ? there were no things to end! are you crazy?? Also didnât you tell everyone youâd rather die than go out with me?â she was genuinely so confused by the whole interaction.

while niki rode the escalator, his headphones blasted his solo song as he ran through the choreography in his head. he was hardly paying attention to anything around him, just making sure he knew his competition dance back to front. but it became increasingly harder to ignore the crowd at the bottom of the escalator, seemingly waiting for people. he looked around, searching for the easiest way to escape the crowd without bumping into anybody before something caught his eye.
is that couple arguing? she certainly looks mad. He thought, unable to pull his eyes away from the sight. the girl was clutching her suitcase handle for dear life, while the boy persistently pushed the flowers towards her direction. seems like she doesnât like him. Niki pulled out one of his earbuds, trying to nonchalantly eavesdrop.
âplease go away! seriously I think you might be going through some form of psychosis and thatâs really not my problem!â y/n whisper-yelled, trying not to cause a scene.
âbut please! i need to know you forgive me! that some small part of you will always respect and love me y/n!â the guy insisted.
this guy seems crazy. niki thought. but y/n is a pretty name.
y/n was stressed, unsure of how to get away from him without being followed.
niki took note of how nervous she looked, wondering if he should do something or not.
come on, just put your headphones back in and act like you didnât notice. this doesnât involve you. just mind your business! you donât know these people! theyâll be fine! just walk away! niki thought to himself, getting off the escalator and starting to walk past the couple. but then he made eye contact with y/n and noticed a pleading look in her eye. suddenly his plans went out the window as he turned around to face the couple.
âexcuse me- my girlfriend and I are in a rush and really need to get going.â niki announced, quickly wrapping his arm around y/nâs waist as if it were habitual. âwho even are you man?â
the guy was taken aback, and y/n shared the same shock. little did they know, niki was just as stunned. why on earth did he do that??? It was as if the words left his mouth before niki even gave them permission to. what was he thinking?
y/n glanced to her right at her alleged boyfriend, taking note of his tall frame and the way his hand held her. she could feel the cold metal of the rings he was wearing through her sweatshirt.
âoh- Iâm sorry- yeah Iâll be going- talk soon y/n!â the guy quickly turned around and walked away, dropping the flowers in a nearby trash can as he left. nikiâs grip on y/nâs waist tightened slightly, the tips of his fingers grazing lightly against her skin. he definitely wasnât expecting that to actually work so easily.
now alone, the two paused for a second, unsure of what to say. niki suddenly felt very awkward and aware of how insanely creepy he might appear to the girl. y/nâs heart was beating quickly but she couldnât tell if it was anxiety over her old crush or interest in the boy standing next to her now.

the pair spoke at the same time, niki suddenly pulling his hand away from her waist as if he forgot it was even there. after quite a few moments of dead silence, niki finally spoke.
âyeah Iâm realizing now that that mightâve been slightly frightening. im niki!â he smiled, biting his lip and reaching out his hand to shake hers.
ây/n.â she laughed slightly at how self conscious he suddenly seemed and reached out her hand.
âwell you just kinda seemed like you needed a way out so I thought I could help.â he nervously smiled, scratching the back of his neck and looking at the floor.
âitâs okay. definitely wasnt expecting some dude to appear but thank you. I really didnât know how to make him go away so yeahâŚyou were a great help.â y/n smiled awkwardly and gave him a thumbs up, immediately regretting it. he laughed.
the two returned to an awkward silence. y/n didnât really want him to go, he seemed interesting and sorta funny. but what reason was there for him to stay? itâs not like they knew each other. besides, he probably had somewhere to be.
little did she know he was thinking the exact same things. as he stared at her he tried to make a guess as to where she could be going, or if she seemed in a hurry.
âum- would you maybe want to get a coffee? yâknow to make up for me calling you my girlfriend?â he asked, avoiding eye contact. her eyes lit up.
âyes! I mean- you are my boyfriend apparently so itâs only right.â she teased, earning a smile from him. he relaxed as they settled into a mutual banter.
âah right as always dear.â he grinned, no longer as shy as before.
âdear? what are we seventy?â she laughed.
âwhat would you prefer?â he questioned.
âletâs see how the date goes.â she jokingly rolled her eyes.
âoh this is a date?â he raised his eyebrows, smirking.
âwell no- I was just saying that because-â she nervously rambled.
âim kidding its a date.â he smiled and started heading towards the coffee shop. âmy betrothedâŚâ he whispered, staring straight ahead. his own joke caused him to immediately bite his lip to hold back a laugh.
