jake stood pacing back and forth around his room, panicking. heeseung and niki were right, he definitely needed to sort things out with y/n but he wasnât entirely sure how. if she regretted the almost-kiss, then how was she going to react if he told her he had feelings for her? it was truly a lose-lose situation. as badly as he wanted to kiss her, jake would rather die than lose their friendship.
his thoughts kept jumping back and forth as he walked all the way back to playa bowls. he wasnât sure what to say yet, but he couldnât stand the thought of her being upset and not talking to him. as the doorbell rung, jake slowly walked into the shop with his head held low.
âjake?â y/n asked, clearly startled.
ây/n Iâm so sorry about earlier- I shouldnât have done that and I shouldâve-â jake began walking towards her before she interrupted.
âjake please. we can talk later!" y/n whispered.
âno please let me explain myself. i care a lot about you as a friend and-â his voice sped up.

âhello! my name is jake, itâs such a pleasure to meet you manager carl!â he grinned and extended his hand.
âa pleasure?â the playa bowls manager repeated, confused.
âoh i forgot to mention- Iâm the jake that y/n has been training for the cafe position! yeah sheâs been teaching me all about the kitchen and the different recipes. sheâs great!â jake beamed while y/n closed her eyes wishing to somehow disappear from the situation.
âtraining? I think you must be confused, we are not currently hiring, so Iâm not sure what training you received.â carl explained, looking between y/n and jake.
y/n kept her eyes trained on the floor, unable to look up at her manager or to meet jakeâs confused glance.
âwhat?â was all that jake managed to say.
âyeah we arenât hiring, i apologize jake.â the manager stated.
ây/n whatâs going on?â jake looked towards her, still incredibly lost.
âI actually have the same question, y/n.â the manager interjected.
visibly shaking, y/n fiddled with her bracelets and refused eye contact with either of them. she had to say something. there was no way of getting her out of the situation now, and it was all her fault.
that day when jake suddenly panicked and asked for a job application instead of y/nâs number seemed harmless at the time. y/nâs choice to lie about the fact that playa bowls was currently hiring also seemed like an issue for the future. now, it was the future. and the issue was definitely feeling present!!!
âI-â she began, unsure of where to go next.
as y/nâs mind raced with millions of possible excuses, jakeâs mind flipped through every memory of y/n since they met. he didnât understand what the hell was actually going on, but what he did understand was y/nâs kindness and commitment to her job. she might joke around and complain about working there, but jake knew that she really loved it, and was great at it. that alone was enough to force jake to take a step back from the situation. after a few beats of tension-filled silence, jake took a deep breath and started yapping.
âah you caught me! I apologize y/n and manager carl. I was just joking around. i really didnât mean to cause any trouble⊠just playing a simple prank! you know how it is!â jake awkwardly laughed.
y/n finally looked up, fighting the urge to face palm or run right out the door. carlâs reaction seemed not to far from y/nâs and the store was filled with a dreadfully awkward silence.
âyâknow- gotcha! and stuffâŠâ jake did finger guns with a sheepish grin.
âso you havenât been trained by y/n?â manager carl questioned, still confused.
ânope. Iâve never seen that woman in my life. never even been in this store before. what do you guys sell?â jake rambled on, feeding into his own lie to try and make it more believable.
âokay. well jake, it was a pleasure meeting you! but Iâm going to have to ask you to leave our store.â manager carl crossed his arms.

after inviting y/n to his frat's bonfire held that saturday, jake followed up by asking about another training shift. now y/n ran back and forth between serving customers and teaching jake how to prepare a smoothie behind the counter.
"if the recipes are in the back kitchen i dont understand why you can't just leave them out as a cheat-sheet so you never mess up the drinks." jake commented, flipping through the recipe booklet with his plastic gloves.
"because the point is for you to learn. also because management doesn't want customers to see and think we are incompetent." y/n retorted, refilling the bin of frozen pineapple within the fridge.
"ah. are you gonna teach me how to make the summer smoothies now?" jake grinned, pointing towards the new colorful chalk on the menu board.
"absolutely not. i barely even know how to make those." y/n admitted with a laugh.
"oh come on y/n. please?" jake pouted his lips and pleaded to y/n.
with a roll of her eyes, y/n reluctantly nodded, making jake gleefully clap and follow her to the freezer.
"first lets grab all the ingredients! we need yuzu, pitaya, pineapple, coconut milk, coco whip, and collagen." y/n listed off everything in their new pink summer smoothie while jake grabbed all of it.
"now what?" he smiled after setting everything down on the counter.
"hm. great question. now we...." y/n's eyes drifted towards the recipe book hanging off the wall in the back kitchen.
"no y/n...you wouldn't!" jake teased.
"i told you i didnt know the recipe!" y/n threw her hands up in defeat.
"but you also told me the recipe book is off limits!" he retorted. "this is going to be your new challenge, you have to make the smoothie without the recipe and i will judge." he smirked.
"what? you're the one being trained here! why are you judging?" y/n laughed in disbelief.
"consider it an employment evaluation!" jake shrugged.
"wow. i can't believe you're trying to take my job."
"hey i won't have to if you make the smoothie!"
"fine." y/n glared at him and started setting up the blender. she really couldn't remember the exact order of the ingredients, or how much of each, or how to pour it into the cup so that it looked all pink and swirly, but she was determined to prove jake wrong.
as she started combining the pitaya and yuzu base in the blender, jake leaned against the counter grinning and taking off his gloves.
"are you just going to sit and watch me the entire time?" y/n called over her shoulder.
"yup." he nodded.
"naturally."
"are you saying im a distraction? y/n please this is a busy kitchen! you have to learn to work under pressure-" jake teased, gradually becoming more animated.
his teasing would've been more effective if he hadn't accidentally knocked over a jar of spoons in the midst of his whole spiel. but, it made y/n giggle, so jake didnt care about feeling embarrassed as he picked up each individual fallen spoon.
y/n carefully sprinkled teaspoons of each ingredient into the blender, just eyeballing the measurements from memory.
"i can't believe you guys put collagen in these. i didn't know that was edible." jake furrowed his brows, picking up the container of collagen and looking disgusted.
"how else do you explain my light and youthful appearance?"
"natural beauty." jake answered with zero hesitation.
y/n simply rolled her eyes and got back to smoothie-making. she was running out of witty comebacks for his pick-up lines, partially because of how they were gradually beginning to work on her.
jake on the other hand, mentally gave himself a high-five as he noticed y/n remain silent after his comment. he hoped she only kept herself turned away from him to hide her blushing, or something like that.
"noise!" y/n yelled before starting the blender and turning to face jake.
"how's it going?" jake yelled.
"cant hear you sorry!" y/n mouthed, motioning between the blender and her ears.
"HOWS IT GOING?" he yelled again, determined to cut through the noise, y/n simply gave him a confused glance.
"HOWS IT-"
jake started yelling again right when the blender finished, closing his mouth immediately with a defeated look. y/n immediately burst into laughter at his puppy-like appearance.
"that's low y/n." he frowned.
"i dont know what you're talking about." she smiled, pouring the smoothie mixture into a cup. "voila!" she showcased her finished product, awaiting jake's approval.
"i shall now judge your work, madame." jake took the smoothie and examined it up close and far away, twisting his head in all kinds of directions to get a closer look.
"how is this helping the judging process?"
"shh. the master is at work." jake said, deadpanned. y/n watched him with an amused expression. "it is now time for the taste-test."
jake cleared his throat and took a deep breath before taking a sip of the drink through the bright pink straw. his expression remained motionless, which y/n took as a bad sign.
"oh come on, it can't be that bad." y/n pleaded.
"and how would you know that?" jake teased.
"i think you might just not like the smoothie in general- how do you know its my fault?" y/n suggested.
"fair point."
"let me try it and see-" y/n reached to take the smoothie out of his hands but he immediately snatched it away. "hey!"
y/n kept reaching for the drink, but jake kept moving it in the opposite direction, even going as far as to hold it high above his head so that she couldn't reach.
"wow. now that's a low blow." y/n crossed her arms and stared at him, defeated.
"i guess you can't try it." jake shrugged, teasing. y/n took this as a challenge and started jumping up to reach the smoothie, but jake kept quickly putting it in different directions.
as he did this, the two kept getting closer and closer. jake was boxed into a corner, still leaning against the kitchen counter while the distance between their two bodies continued to shrink. throughout the whole exchange, jake's eyes remained fixated on y/n's as she stared at the moving cup.
she hadn't yet noticed his eyes on hers, because she was so focused on getting her smoothie back. after her fourth or fifth failed attempt at jumping up to reach it, her eyes fell on his, prepared to give him some sarcastic remark. instead, she felt frozen.
y/n hadn't realized how close sheâd gotten to him, or how jake couldnât care less about the smoothie and was only paying attention to her.
as they held eye contact, jake slowly lowered the smoothie down onto the counter next to him, but neither of them actually moved. they were frozen in this position, keeping their intense eye contact as they remained too close for comfort.
y/n felt the heat rising in her cheeks, and jake had to bite back a smile as he noticed how shy she'd suddenly become. he cautiously lifted his hand, gently moving to tuck a strand of hair behind y/n's ear. she blushed deeper as he moved, too nervous to break eye contact.
instead of removing his hand, jake merely kept his palm resting along her jaw, his thumb lightly grazing her cheek. she took a deep breath, blinking at him slowly.
the entire moment felt as though it were playing out in slow motion. except for the quickest, almost unnoticeable way jakeâs eyes flickered down to her lips. it was so fast, so small, that she almost worried she mightâve imagined the whole thing. until he did it again, holding his gaze on her lips for a second longer this time.
the corner of y/nâs mouth curved into a smile and jake couldnât help but do the same. without a second thought, y/nâs eyes fluttered closed as she slowly leaned in towards jake. the smile on his lips remained as he began to lean into her as well.
it was almost nothing, a faint brush of lips, light as a feather- if anything- before y/n jumped back, covering her mouth with her hand and looking at the ground.
she couldnât bring herself to face him. but through her lashes, she could see the concern written all over his face. both the silence and the tension were suddenly incredibly loud.
ây/n i-â jake sighed before she cut him off.
âyou should get going! i think you had enough training for the day.â she turned around to catch her breath, refusing to look back.
jake took a careful step towards her.

âdonât forget to grab your stuff!â she sputtered, reaching for a cloth to mindlessly scrub against the counter.
jake took one last pleading look at her, trying to decide whether or not to say anything more, before ultimately bolting away wordlessly.
y/n waited to hear the bell on the front door ring before she could let out the breath she was holding.

y/n took off her playa bowls hat and brushed her fingers through her hair in the bathroom mirror. it was 11:56, so her shift was basically over, meaning jake would be here momentarily. she reapplied her lip gloss and fiddled with her jewelry nervously.
y/n was aware it was dumb to be so nervous, but she couldnât help but worry about how she might act around jake now that she realized she has a crush on him. instead of finding him stupid and annoying, she was probably going to be giggling and kicking her feet the entire hangout which was her worst nightmare.
megan and yunjin werenât working today, just these two other girls who y/n wasnât really close with because the were never scheduled together. since it was a pretty slow shift, y/n took the liberty of clocking out a few minutes early to get ready. she took off her jean shorts in the bathroom and changed into a long white skirt because the shorts started feeling like they were cutting off her circulation. she slipped on a pink shirt over her bikini top, and put some sunscreen on before heading out.

âokay...?â y/n shrugged, unsure of what to say.
âso whatâs the answer?â jake pursed his lips.
âdude we just met like three days ago-â
âand? thatâs how it works! you meet people, you like them, you go on a date, you fall in love get married-â
âoh so weâre going to get married?â y/n raised her eyebrows.
âno thatâs not what I meant.â he sighed. âI just meant that if we go on a date then we can get to know each other better.â
the two stared at each other for a moment.
âIâm putting a pin in this conversation.â y/n stated.
âwhat? no! thatâs not how this works you canât do that!â
âJAKE I PINNED IT.â she said, starting to walk back to the shore, leaving him alone with his surfboard.
âsheâll unpin it.â he whispered to himself once sheâd gone. âsheâll definitely unpin it.â
"are you coming or not? you've gotta hold up your end of the trade!" y/n called out to him.
"coming!" he wiped the water off his face and started to follow her back to playa bowls. luckily playa was just down the boardwalk so it was only a brisk walk away. plus, the bright sunlight made sure to dry them off before getting to work.
once inside, y/n set up the ingredients on the playa counter as jake placed his surfboard in the back closet.
âokay are you ready for your nutella bowl lesson?â y/n asked, motioning to the counter.
"indeed i am. whatâs the first step?" jake asked, stepping towards her and cracking his knuckles.
"so we have to start by putting granola along the bottom of the bowl- do you think you can handle that?" y/n teased, handing him the granola.
"of course ma'am." he saluted.
"please don't call me ma'am." y/n sighed.
"okay y/n here i go!" he carefully leaned over the counter and sprinkled granola along the bottom of the bowl before stepping back to admire his work. "voila!"
"very good! now you have to add the acai. just scoop it out of the blender, fill it quite generously but make sure to leave room for toppings. trust me I fucked that up a lot during training and my bowls were overflowing. please learn from my mistakes.â y/n instructed.
jake was surprisingly focused, y/n couldn't help but sit back and smile at his determination.
"is this a good amount?"
"yes now you need to do the bananas... this is kinda where you have to be very precise- you need to slice them evenly and place them along the edge." y/n passed him a knife and a peeled banana.
jake bent over the counter again, eye level with the banana on the cutting board. he began to very slowly make cuts in the banana as evenly as he could.
âSHIT!â he suddenly yelled, dropping the knife and gripping his finger.
âwhat? are you okay!?!â y/n asked, startled.
jake didnât say anything, just kept a tight grip on his finger with his eyes glued shut.
âjake did you cut your finger?? is it bleeding??â y/n went up to him and grabbed his hand, forcing it open to reveal his finger. as she did so, a smirk appeared across jakeâs face as his unscathed finger wiggled in her face.
âHA!â he yelled.
âARE YOU SERIOUS? WHATâS YOUR PROBLEM???â y/n yelled at him, smacking his arm while he kept laughing.
âwere you worried about me?â he teased, stepping closer. their height different suddenly becoming noticeable as he towered over her.
âyou piss me off.â y/n crossed her arms, glaring at him.
âu were worried about me.â he repeated, smiling.
âokay and im gonna hit you.â she threatened.
âcan you hit on me instead?â he winked, causing y/n to cringe immediately.
âYOU ARE SO EMBARRASSING???â she laughed, unable to make eye contact with him because she was so icked out.
jake smiled and held back a laugh, instead choosing to stand there silently just looking at her.
âis this a bad time to ask you to unpin that whole date thing?â he suddenly asked.
âoh so now Iâm really going to hit you.â y/n emphasized, turning around to start chopping the bananas on her own.
jake bit back a smile as he watched her pull her hair back and concentrate on fixing his shitty banana slicing. maybe he shouldnât be coming on so strong, and maybe he shouldnât be nonstop flirting with her, but he couldnât help it.
âOW.â y/n whispered under her breath, pulling her hand away from the cutting board and shaking it off.
âare you okay?â jake snapped out of his daze.
âyeah Iâm good i just got my finger-â
âno no let me see it- is it bad?â jake asked, grabbing her hand.
âyouâre such a loser.â she laughed, holding up her uninjured hand. âI really didnât think youâd fall for that⊠wow.â
âoh youâre an asshole.â he announced.
âam i? you did it first.â
âtoosh.â he replied, smirking. y/n rolled her eyes.
âokay letâs get back to work i want my nutella bowl.â y/n turned back to the counter and motioned for jake to join her.
they spent the next half hour making acai bowls before y/n reluctantly kicked jake out. they were having fun, but y/n started panicking when she noticed how she started finding his jokes a little too funny and his flirty comments a little too charming.

"why did i agree to this." y/n asked, looking towards the waves crashing at the shore.
"because its fun! and afterwards you're going to teach me how to make your signature nutella bowl so its a fair trade!" jake grinned, heading out to the water.
y/n sighed as she followed him, clutching her surfboard. it wasn't actually her surfboard, it was jake's old one, a faded turquoise color with the remnants of wax plastered across it.
"okay so do you know how to swim?" jake asked, genuinely.
"are you being serious?"
"yes?" he raised his eyebrows.
"yes jake i can swim???" y/n clarified.
"great! we're already halfway there!" he grinned. "i think we're going to start with some basic paddling first so let's get out to about waist-deep."
jake took his surfboard from her as y/n followed him into the water. the two swam in silence until they reached the ideal depth.
"the water's actually really nice today." y/n commented, bending down to wet her hair.
"yeah, totally." he mindlessly stared at her as she floated on her back, eyes closed, the smell of her sunscreen and perfume filling the air.
"are we gonna start?" she suddenly asked, breaking his focus as she sat up.
"yes! you're gonna get on the surfboard and lay on your stomach and start paddling. i'll hold you in place so you can get the hang of it then let you free- kind of like teaching someone how to ride a bike!"
"except this time you're sending me out to sea where i could just never come back!" y/n added.
"nah some boat would probably find you. someday." he smirked, earning a splash of water to the face from y/n. "hey!" he glared before breaking out into a smile. "alright get on it's time to lock in."
y/n hoisted herself up onto the surfboard as jake held it steady, making an extra effort that the board stay as still as possible.
"okay now lay on your stomach and just start paddling." jake helped.
y/n did as she was told, and started splashing jake with insane amounts of water as he held the board behind her.
"WOAH- OKAY- SO- YOU'VE GOT IT- Y/N STOP!" he shouted, progressively getting soaked as y/n just laughed.
"sorry i didn't quite get that what did you say-" y/n teased, about to splash him even more.
"I'LL LET GO OF THE SURFBOARD." jake threatened, eyebrows raised.
"YOU WOULDNT." the two were now in a sort of stare-off, just glaring at each other and furrowing their brows.
"oh i would." jake teased.
"fine." she gave in, "what's next?" y/n asked, sitting up on the board.
"now we've gotta practice the pop-up- it's where you go from laying on your stomach to standing upright." jake explained.
"are we sure i'm ready for that?" y/n asked, clearly a bit nervous.
"yeah i'll be holding onto you the whole time. i promise i wouldn't let you drown." he replied sincerely. y/n just smiled at him silently for a moment before locking in.
"okay i'm ready!" she declared.
"so it's sort of like a push up- or like in yoga when you do a plank into a downward dog?"
"right...yes...in yoga..." y/n laughed.
"well of course. first just go from your stomach to a seal-like position with your chest up." jake explained, y/n following along. "good! now you've gotta get on your feet, one at a time- wow it's like you're a professional already!" he clapped, not realizing he had let go of the surfboard that y/n was now hesitantly standing on.
"JAKE I SWEAR TO GOD." y/n yelled the second he let go.
"what? OH-" he quickly grabbed the sides of the board again. "my fault on that one."
"yeah. BUT LOOK IM STANDING!" she smiled.
"you are!" jake looked up at her, grinning, and y/n slowly glanced over to meet his gaze and gave him a thumbs up. of course, she was still careful not to move too suddenly in case she lost her balance. the two shared a few seconds of excitement before snapping back to reality.
it was as if she suddenly remembered she was (sort of) standing on water, and y/nâs legs immediately began to wobble, her eyes shifting to look at her feet and the water surrounding her. jake was quick to intervene.
"you're okay! just slowly try and bend down and get back-"
splash.
"right yeah or i guess you could just give up." jake laughed as she landed in the water. "are you alright?" he eventually called when her head resurfaced.
"i fell." she announced, her eyes glued shut, burning from the saltwater.
"i noticed."
"i don't think i like surfing."
"but you didn't even actually surf. you just stood on a board. that's not the same thing!" jake tried to defend his favorite water-sport as y/n wrung her wet hair out over the board.
"okay then i dont like standing on a board!"
"which means you could like surfing." jake pointed out.
"you annoy me." y/n responded after a beat of silence, glaring at him.
"do i?" he teased.
"i'll splash you again." y/n threatened.
"well i'm already wet so-" he started, y/n raised her eyebrows immediately. "NO- NOT LIKE THAT- NO. Y/N. NO." jake tried to defend himself as she broke out into fits of laughter.
"right..." y/n smiled.
"you annoy me." jake replied.
"do i?" she teased.
"we're just going in circles now."
"as opposed to..." y/n wondered, half-joking. jake swallowed before making a bold suggestion.

"good morning boss!" jake saluted y/n with a wide grin as he entered playa bowls.
"yeah okay none of that..." y/n turned around to grab the training packet before sitting down at the table.
"heard. so what's the vibe here? you ask me a bunch of questions?" jake asked, sitting down across from her.
"well yes that is how interviews work!" y/n answered sarcastically.
"cool. don't go easy on me y/n! im ready." he grinned, sitting back in his chair with his arms crossed.
"alright what made you want to work here at playa bowls?" she twirled the pen in her hand, staring down at her notes.
"well y/n, if i must be totally honest, the cashier was cute." he laughed.
"be serious." she glared at him.
"fine I need a summer job and I like the drinks here." he sat up straighter.
"what's something unique you think you can bring to the team?"
"my charming personality!" he gave a fake smile.
"you're annoying." she looked down at her notes.
"and you're smiling." he leaned closer.
"you know I don't have to hire you, right?"
"yeah but i know you want to."
"and why is that?"
"so that you never have to make a ding repair again because ill just be able to make them myself." he shrugged.
she titled her head to the side, considering this.
"you know, I always thought that it was pronounced 'toosh'." he confessed.
"no you didnt." she laughed.
"yeah no I didn't. i dont know why i said that." he laughed along with her.
"alright let's go to the kitchen I'm going to give you a tour." she stood up, clutching her note pad and pen. he smiled as he got up to follow her, it felt like he was nailing this.
as y/n led him behind the counter to the pantry he chose to continue teasing her.
"oh so this is where your friends hide and gossip about me?" he commented, poking his head in the pantry and looking around.
"yeah and that's where your friends mock you and your pickup lines." she retorted, motioning to the ordering station.
"toosh." he said, earning a slight smile from y/n before she continued the tour.
"we don't actually have a break room but we usually just sit at the back two tables or hangout in the pantry as you so kindly pointed out." she smiled, guiding him towards the pickup station. "that's kind of it. we keep all the ingredients in the pantry and we usually make everything behind the counter. do you have any questions for me?"
he pondered for a moment.
"do you like surfing?" he asked.
"okay when I asked if you had questions, i meant ones pertaining to the job." she sighed.
"okay y/n, when you are not working, do you enjoy surfing?" he repeated.
"and that question still doesn't pertain to the job!" she replied.
"LOOK DO YOU LIKE SURFING OR NOT?" he responded, impatient.
"wow I didn't realize this was so personal to you! no, i've never been surfing." she answered reluctantly.
"okay well we're gonna have to do something about that." he announced.
"we?"
"yeah, i'll text you." he stated like it was obvious.
"i dont think that's very professional of you." she responded.
"okay then consider it a coworker bonding experience!"
"we aren't even coworkers."
"not yet! maybe this will help convince you!" he stepped closer.
"unless i drown." she declared.
"okay that's a good point." he sighed. "i guess we will have to wait and see."
she paused, staring at him with her arms crossed.
"well it was nice to meet you, I look forward to connecting with you further throughout this process." she said in a fake customer service voice, offering to shake his hand.
"of course, as do i." he mimicked her tone and returned her handshake, bowing his head slightly.
"okay now please leave my store I need to yap to megan and yunjin about this interview." she led him to the door.
"fair enough. ill see you later, y/n!" he waved as he walked out the door.

usually at work, y/n kept herself busy by fiddling around with the work playlist, reorganizing shelves, and secretly playing games on her phone or scrolling through tik tok. today however, she was too nervous and kept pacing back and forth, unable to take her eyes off of the door for too long. she'd met this guy once, he ordered the stupidest drink on the menu, and then came back looking for her the next day. allegedly. she was just kinda entertained by the whole situation, plus he was cute.
y/n settled for playing games in the kitchen with megan and yunjin to pass the time. currently they were tossing blueberries at each other and trying to catch it in their mouths. she'd only been able to catch two, and now there were just a bunch of blueberries on the floor. at least that gave her another thing to do later.
suddenly the all too familiar bells rang, and y/n practically sprinted to the counter to see who it was.
as expected, three boys stood by the ordering station all wearing a slightly awkward expression.
"hey." jake cleared his throat, nervously smiling.
y/n could see his two friends, heeseung and niki, trying their best not to laugh behind him.
"hello again. what can i get for you today?" y/n smiled, pretending like this was any other customer.
"would you hate me if i said i wanted a ding repair?" he asked.
"yes. 1000% yes. i will kick you out of the store." y/n said with zero hesitation.
"noted. what would you recommend?" jake took a step forward and leaned against the counter, not breaking eye contact. y/n suddenly felt nervous, heeseung and niki exchanged glances with their eyebrows raised.
"bro this is like in middle school when you ask your crush for a hug after recess-" megan whispered, yunjin quickly shushing her. the two of them were hidden in the pantry, but peeking through the doorway to eavesdrop.
"well i dont actually order any of the drinks here. i usually like the acai bowls." y/n shrugged.
"ah. i've never had one." jake glanced at the menu.
"really? you come to an acai bowl place just for their juices? why not go to a juice place?" y/n laughed.
"their workers aren't as cute."
heeseung and niki immediately burst out laughing behind him, clutching each other to try and keep it together. y/n closed her eyes, stifling a laugh.
"right of course." she said, watching as his two friends tried to hold back their laughter.
"bro is the rizzler.." niki whispered, heeseung hitting him on the arm.
"can i get a nutella acai bowl then?" jake smiled, trying to ignore heeseung and niki.
"of course. coming right up!" she quickly turned and walked back to the pantry, her eyes widening as she replayed the entire interaction.
"oh so he really wants that cookie." megan whispered the second y/n entered.
"WHAT DO I DO??" y/n whisper-yelled, reaching for the blender.
"i think you make him an acai bowl and then walk back out there and jump over the counter and passionately make out-"
"YUNJIN IM BEING SERIOUS!" y/n hit her on the arm playfully.
"fine okay here's what you do..."
meanwhile in the waiting area...
"jake bro what the hell was that-" niki laughed.
"INSANE RIZZ!" jake grinned proudly.
"you are not real dude. i thought you were gonna ask for her number." heeseung laughed.
"trust me i've got this all planned out."
"right okay..." niki looked at heeseung, clearly not believing him. jake looked at his reflection in the window, fixing his hair and shirt.
"nutella acai bowl for jake!" y/n suddenly called, startling him. he awkwardly leaned against the counter and smiled.
"i was just admiring the nature." jake claimed.
"definitely." y/n laughed.
"can i get one more thing?" he asked, standing up straighter.
"what would you like?" she asked, learning against the counter the way he had previously, and now jake seemed nervous. heeseung and niki were looking away, already embarrassed by whatever jake was about to do.
"could i get your..."
"my...?"
jake and y/n stared at each other for a while. jake seemed like he had forgotten where he was, just staring into her eyes incredibly down bad. y/n just waited patiently for his response.
"could i get your job application?" jake suddenly broke the silence.
niki slapped a hand to his forehead, heeseung sighed.
"my job application?" y/n asked, confused.
"um- yes! are you guys hiring?" jake questioned, y/n nodded.
"yeah we are um- let me just grab one for you." y/n bent down to the cupboards underneath the counter, mindlessly searching. while she was down there, heeseung and niki immediately started bullying jake.
"WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?" niki mouthed to him silently.
"I DONT KNOW!!" jake mouthed back.
"YOU ARE SO STUPID." heeseung interjected.
y/n abruptly shot up from behind the counter, the three boys jumped and tried to appear natural, smiling at her awkwardly.
"i don't think we have any fresh copies of job applications right now." y/n announced, looking at the three of them suspiciously.
"oh that's okay." jake smiled.
"could i just get your full name and number to write down?" y/n asked casually.
heeseung and niki raised their eyebrows, jake nervously cleared his throat.
"yeah of course-" he reached for a pen and started writing down his information on the sticky note y/n placed in front of him.
y/n snuck a glance back at the pantry, megan and yunjin both giving her a thumbs up. when she looked back, it appeared heeseung and niki were doing the same thing.
"i'll text you about the job." she smiled when he finished writing.
"looking forward to it." jake smiled back, staring at her.
"your acai bowl?" she asked pushing it towards him.
"ah thank you." he grabbed it, lightly brushing her hand. "i never got your name."
"oh! it's y/n."
"i hope to hear from you soon, y/n." he grinned. "you know- about the job i mean."
"right of course."
jake turned away and headed for the door following heeseung and niki. he took one last look at her and waved as he walked out. she watched as his friends started high-fiving him the second the door shut.
"right so. when are you going to tell him we aren't actually hiring?" megan asked, stepping up to y/n at the counter with yunjin.
"i actually haven't quite thought that far ahead." she furrowed her eyebrows.
