author recommendation: caloriebomb

This is the first post in a series of wg author/fic recommendations. I'm tagging authors' tumblr accounts if I know them, under the assumption that people will want to hear if their work is being discussed, but please let me know if you'd like to be untagged (or tagged, or to have this post removed, etc.)

Kicking off this series with caloriebomb (on Tumblr as @caloriebomber), whose work I've been reading almost as long as I can remember. Their writing is deliciously visceral and they're a master of pacing, and I wouldn't be surprised if most fic writers in the community today have been influenced by their work in some way. Common themes include feedist relationships, intentional wg, absolutely massive amounts of rich fatty foods, some exhibitionism of the wg variety, mild mobility issues.

my favorite fics:

Vicarious (Supernatural, 2014). I cannot begin to estimate how many times I've read this. I know that I read fic before this one came out (for years before this!), but it was so good that it kind of eclipsed everything I'd read prior and has sort of cemented itself in my memory as The First Fic. I don't know much about Supernatural, but the characters in this are like... alter egos or something? of the main dudes, so they're not actually brothers in this. The premise is that they move in together and one of them (consensually) fattens up the other. Simple but effective.

Doubling the Recipe (Avengers, 2016). This one has one of my favorite scenes in all of wg fic (ch 5). The whole fic is catnip for shame/situational humiliation/loss of fitness lovers, but that chapter... holy shit. Peak. Steve is a personal trainer and Bucky is his roommate who's rapidly gaining weight.

The Old College Try (Raven Cycle, 2018). This is tagged as "is there a name for rich-boys-wasting-money-kink?". Whatever the name is, this fic gave it to me. Gansey is a rich kid who goes to college and gives in to gluttony and decadence. Features shame (particularly from his rich/high-status parents), complicated feelings, contrast, and a scene where Ronan dares Gansey to eat $500 worth of food in one day that I've thought about ever since I first read this.

wg author recommendations

There's so much good wg fic out there, and because old posts don't get surfaced on ao3, I suspect a lot of the good stuff has been buried. Checking out other people's bookmarks doesn't totally work, because a lot of this genre gets bookmarked on private. Plus it's just fun to give praise to authors for doing good work -- as a former lurker, I was too afraid to do that for a long time, but now I've got a wg sideblog, so I have no more excuses.

So I want to start a little series of posts where I highlight some of my favorite authors and fics. This is going to focus on fics that are on ao3 - I read a lot of good stuff before ao3 came around, but most of it's been lost to the sands of livejournal/ffn/dims or taken down. I'll tag author tumblrs if I know them because I think it's nice to know when others are talking about you (especially positively!), but of course anyone should please let me know if they want to be untagged (or tagged) and I'll do so!

I’d also love to know your post (or mid!) hockey career loss of fitness thoughts— as fun or as angsty as you want to get. I find it hot to imagine that Ilya (and/or Shane) continues to work out and stay decently well-conditioned even as he gets bigger, but that even so the weight still starts to take a toll on his joints and his desire to haul himself up a flight of stairs etc. it would be so easy for it to get out of hand, especially with the size of his appetite.

What comes to mind is inspired by one of my fave wg fics, Mornings: Yoongi and Yoga by the incredible Akranes.

One day, after they've been retired a few years and Ilya's put on... let's say in the neighborhood of a hundred pounds, Shane has the idea that they should start doing yoga to stay flexible. They both still lift every day, and Shane runs, and Ilya has his Peloton that he switched to for cardio after running started to feel a little too rough on his knees. (But even biking is starting to get uncomfortable; his thighs press up against his belly, and his moobs are starting to jiggle a bit, prompting Shane to joke that Ilya needs a sports bra.) Shane's been reading these articles about the importance of motility and flexibility to prevent falls in old age. He hasn't succeeded at convincing his husband to limit his fast food intake ("This is a free country, yes? It is my right as a Canadian to eat Timbits."), but maybe he can at least get him on board with decreasing his fall risk. At a certain point, even Shane would struggle to lift him if he were to fall.

Ilya acquiesces to yoga, but he has that look in his eye that suggests he's laughing internally at Shane. About what - Shane doesn’t know. But he finds a video on YouTube and puts it up on the big screen in their den. It’s 45 minutes long, but that should be fine; they’re athletes, after all.

The first few minutes of the video go okay. It’s mostly just rolling their shoulders and necks in circles. Then, the instructor tells them to raise their arms into the air, which makes Ilya’s t-shirt ride up and his large belly bounce into view. Shane swallows, and it must be audible, because he can hear Ilya smirking now.

Here’s what Shane learns over the course of the next fifteen minutes:

Ilya can’t touch his toes. He can barely bend 45 degrees at the waist before his belly stops any further movement.

Ilya can’t do child’s pose, at least not the way the instructor tells them to. His gut’s just too in the way. Thankfully the instructor has anticipated this, and suggests, as a modification, spreading one’s thighs to allow more room for the belly. When Ilya does this, he lets out a big sigh, and Shane stifles a moan.

When they get to downward dog, Ilya can get into the position, but he’s struggling to hold himself there. Shane can hear his ragged breathing, and they’ve only been in the position for ten seconds.

“You okay there?” asks Shane.

“I am fine,” growls Ilya. “Is just yoga.”

But “just yoga” doesn’t get any easier. The next pose involves getting into a lunge and then reaching back to grab an ankle, and Ilya just physically can’t do it. Shane watches out of the corner of his eye as Ilya tries, multiple times, to maneuver into a twist far enough to reach, but his chunky hips are just too large. He falters, loses balance, and rolls onto the mat.

“Fuck,” says Shane. “Ilya, you alright?!”

But Ilya’s just laughing, the motion shaking his entire body, from his double chin to the roll that’s still hanging out of his shirt to his thunder thighs fighting against his exercise shorts.

thinking about ilya coming off a long depressive episode and finally (finally!!) feeling up to eating a whole meal again. so he goes a liiiittle overboard on david's chicken parmesean. he eats so much he has to stretch himself out on the couch to digest. all three hollanders are relieved to see that he's out of the woods and each of them come by in turn and give his full belly a little affectionate pat. shane ends up situating himself underneath ilya to have full access to soothe his husband's belly. yuna brings them ice cream. peace and love in full!ilya land ✌️

ohh LOVE… shane so relieved to see ilya’s tummy all rounded out and gloriously full that he can’t keep his hands off it, ilya pretending to be annoyed but really he’s just as relieved, he hadn’t meant for it to get that bad, he hadn’t meant to scare everyone…

@sesamesesameand real and true and everytime ilya finishes a meal shane looks at him with big earnest loving eyes and says “That’s really good, Ilya,” and the praise makes something shiver inside him, and soon he’s eating at every opportunity just to hear it. and shane never stops praising him for it, even as ilya passes from underweight to slightly chubby to properly fat, even when it’s clear by his wide, soft belly and quivering chest that he’s no longer in danger of starving. but still the same soft praise, the same big strong hands rubbing his stomach. so good, ilya. i’m so proud of you.

early-retirement shane who keeps underestimating how much weight he’s put on… when they go shopping for clothes, the pants he brings to the dressing room are always too small to button. ilya thinks he’s doing it on purpose, a deliberately sexy bit so he can show off the way his soft gut fights against the zippers. and shane laughs along with ilya but his face is always burning with embarrassment, because he really had thought those pants would fit…

Honestly in HR it's such a narrow line between Shane eating and Shane having an ed about it. I'm in the midst of a fic too and it's honestly such a line to walk that it's kinda bananas!! But glad I'm not the only one struggling here

This is so validating, thanks for telling me! I think I initially avoided the fat Shane side of HR wg in part because I couldn’t figure out how to write him without an ed and I didn’t want to bring the vibe down. But personally I enjoy some angst in my wg fic, and i’ll be so excited to read yours!

“Do you know why you’ve been referred to me?”

“Yes, that’s right. Please. Sit.” the man behind the desk repeats, pointing to the chair again.

Ilya glances down skeptically at the spindly chair with the narrow armrests bracketing either side of the seat.

He hesitates.

Shane trades his outgrown jeans for a comfortable pair of joggers that sit comfortably below his waist, wandering over to his floor mirror with a bit of hesitancy. He knows what he looks like. Still, he can't help but lift up his tee and ghost his hand over his middle. His abs are still there— barely. Honestly, there's not that much of a difference in his body. His ass and thighs are a little bigger. That's all. Nothing to write home about.

He'll just cool it on the late night dining hall trips and beer. Maybe add more cardio into his already exhausting workout routine. That'll fix the problem before he goes home for for the holidays.

Let’s just say it’s kept up with the rest of him

In honor of it being hotter than Satan’s armpit, I’m thinking about how much Fat Ilya would enjoy a body of water.

He’s always loved the lake at the cottage, but as the pounds pile on he’s basically living in there during the summer. All that padding produces enough heat on its own without the sun doing its best to bake him in his blubber. The cool water lapping at his skin feels like heaven when there are rivulets of sweat trickling down from where his plush chest overlaps his belly and he can feel his side rolls sticking whenever he moves (which isn’t very often; the heat makes it easier to lean into the laziness he’s earned).

He’s having fun with it, goading Shane into splash fights and cannonball contests. Despite the miniature tsunami Ilya produces, Shane won’t rate his higher than a 9.5 because ‘there’s always room for improvement.’ To his credit, Shane works with him to hit the perfect 10– bringing sandwiches, chips, and cut fruit out to the dock like it’s a swim-up bar so Ilya doesn’t have to heave himself out of the water every time he wants a snack (which is often).

And anything that involves taking off his shirt and teasing Shane is very much up Ilya’s alley (“They weren’t so tight last summer,” Ilya says as he plucks at the waistband of his slutty little swim shorts, slung low under his belly but still cutting into his swollen love handles. “We just got those in May,” Shane replies, though he’s already adding another pair a couple sizes up to his mental cart.) His belly and chest crest high when he floats on his back, helped by his newfound buoyancy. He can feel Shane’s stare all the way from the shore. As a reward for his diligence, Ilya grabs a handful of pudge, gives his belly a little shake, and counts the seconds until Shane appears at his side— it’s under a minute.

With every passing summer, the water takes on more of his weight. It supports his overtaxed joints and washes away the aches he’s accumulated from maneuvering the hundreds of extra pounds that have made space for themselves on his frame. He loves to eat, and he loves the soft weight that hugs his body (as well as how much Shane loves it), but it’s harder to move now. The little allowances he must make and the increasingly lengthy step-by-step production that every movement requires (even sitting down is something that demands thought)— it all adds up into something that feels, rather ironically, like work. It’s easier in the water’s hold. He feels free there: fat and graceful and in control of his body in a way he never was at his leanest.

When August comes and they have to return to Ottawa, Shane makes some calls about building an indoor pool. Ilya deserves to feel good every day of the year and Shane’s willing to do whatever he can to make that happen.
