It baffles me that critics complained about their inability to become invested in the Dunkirk characters.

Meanwhile the fandom is over here wrtiting meta about the rights and wrongs of various actions and coming up with a bunch of headcanons, and loads of people (myself included) have cried over the characters.

So I don’t know what those critics are on about. Christopher Nolan clearly showed us enough of the characters’ personality to get almost everyone deeply invested.

Exactly. In my opinion, it wasnt about backstories. It was about the war. It wasnt about Tommy or Farrier or Alex or Gibson, no. These characters were representing the mass of soldiers stuck at the Dunkirk beach. Everyone had the same story: left family and friends back at home to win this war for their country. And thats better than individual stories. Chris Nolan was wise not to follow the one soldier backstory war movie cliche. If someone wants that, Atonement (2007) directed by Joe Wright is the one for you. Its a nice film. Dunkirk is fabulous in every way. If anyone critics want to argue, it should be about Chris not getting an Oscar for Dunkirk. END OF CONVERSATION.
