Some advice for aspiring animators from Rebecca Sugar:
1. Don’t shy away from finding inspiration for characters in yourself and the people you love.
“If there’s a character that you like in something else, they probably remind of you someone you know or yourself. So if you can zero in on that and then use that to make your own original character that has those qualities, but maybe even more specific to you, then do that.”
2. You can find inspiration through the things you enjoy, especially when you’re facing a creative block.
“I love to just put on music and draw, when I get stuck, sometimes I’ll do that. I like looking at art that’s not the medium of cartoons, and kind of absorbing that, and making cartoons while thinking of that.”
3. Even though it’s not the most exciting work, learn fundamentals and traditional drawing skills.
This is excellent advice Rebecca’s received from comic artists like Eric Larson, Mike Mignola, and Eric Powell.
4. And most importantly: Make. More. Stuff.
“And the ones that are working, you’ll quickly start to see like, This is what I want to do. You might not even know until you just do a lot of things, and then it will just come into focus.”
gaSPS have i never posted this????
1. Ah Fai was a chief animator for McDull’s animated features. He’s super cool. Ultimate senpai.
2. Previous post on breakdowns right here
Some thoughts on acceleration and force
I presented this in the order of how I slowly understood the trick of delivering force - first an abstract concept of impact taught by Ah Fai, then a more complicated discovery on the acceleration pattern, last back to a more abstract concept of breakdowns.
Like I’ve previously stressed, 2D animation is everything but one single approach. There’s no one rule that rules them all, but interchangeable ideas with math, or physics, or music, etc. There’s no “perfect” animation either, but what is perceived as organic and dynamic. E.g., using the Fibonacci numbers to animate didn’t bring me a perfect animation! On the other hand, a tiny change in the pattern could already make the feeling of force so much more powerful.
Not so much of a tutorial than a personal experience. I hope you find this interesting hahaha
i think its time to upload the uncensored version of this
aLSO AN EXPLANATION FOR THIS SIN THANKS TO @foreverflat15!

Things I Learned In Drawing 1 Class
If it looks wrong, it is wrong.
Draw what you see not what you know to be true
Everything is broken up by shapes and lines. Don’t look at the image look at what makes up the image
You can use grid paper to help you line everything up while you’re learning. Grids are okay
REFERENCES ARE YOUR BEST FRIEND. THEY ARE NOT CHEATING
When using references; there is the quarter rule. If you change more than a quarter of the original image (such as pose, backgrounds, movement) then it’s yours. It’s not stealing.
Only trace to learn, do not trace and post as your own art
Don’t just color over someone else’s art that’s stealing
It’s okay to make mistakes
Try new mediums as often as you can. Charcoal, pastels, crayons, markers, graphite, ink wash, paints (of all kinds) ect. It will help you grow as an artist and find what you like
Figure out what you like in someone elses art, why you like that art. Try to make it your own in your own art. It’s like art genetics
Surround yourself with other artists who will help and encourage you.
Draw for friends! Seeing them get excited that you drew for them will keep you drawing
Art block happens. Try not to stress
Draw daily
Draw from life
DRAW WHAT YOU SEE NOT WHAT YOU KNOW TO BE TRUE
Play with lines and shading: contouring, crosshatching, stippling, blocking.
Experiment
Have fun
Form a small community of you and your friends who like to art. Give each other feedback, give each other advice, and get excited everytime someone draws
Do projects with someone else
Take part in collabs
Realize you’re not perfect and you will never be perfect. There is always something to learn, always time to grow. That’s fun of art
Enjoy the journey and the process
Realize it may not always look like you pictured in your mind
Be proud of your progress
Take breaks
Look at things from a distance
Enjoy what you make
Learn from your mistakes
And lastly: love what you do and do what you love. Don’t change your art for anyone but you.
Artists feel free to add on to this for new artists!
Grids are OK no matter WHAT stage of art you’re at. they’re great for transferring art from one medium to another, say if you want to paint a sketch, or want to put a sketch on the computer and you don’t have a scanner or camera.
Never underestimate the uses you’ll find for the golden ratio
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD stretch!
Don’t let anyone tell you you CAN’T do something. If that ever comes from someone’s mouth, let it become your spite and use it to fuel you.
ART IS NOT A COMPETITION. Just because you’re more advanced than someone else, or they’re more advanced than you, doesn’t mean it’s a race to the finish.
Share your knowledge, and let other people share theirs. You grow when you network.
There’s nothing wrong with seeing the way someone else does something, liking it, and incorporating it into your skill set. You are the sum of everything you’ve ever learned. You tie your shoes the way someone else taught you to tie them, you brush your teeth the way you were taught, you flip pancakes (or don’t) the way you learned. Art is just another skill set, and you can incorporate as much or as little of someone else’s knowledge as you want.
The one piece of advice I ever found useful from my father: DON’T LET FEAR AND COMMON SENSE HOLD YOU BACK. By which I mean, don’t let the idea that you CAN’T do something prevent you from trying.
breaks my hiatus wiTH A MOMENT THAT KILLED ME IN THE GAME HELL YEA?!!!!!
i drew kageyama’s stage actor for my school plates
sorry its messy i jUST WANTED TO CONTRIBUTE SMTH FAST SO YEAH ZTD HYPE
Honestly one of the most important things I can say I’ve learned as an artist is that if you feel like you’re really stagnating, that probably means you’re seeing problems in your work that you have never been able to see before, but you haven’t figured out how to fix them yet.
You’re not really stagnating
You’re understanding of drawing has moved beyond your current execution.
Once you have finished processing the problems you’re suddenly seeing, you’re likely to correct them and suddenly make a huge breakthrough in your drawing.
Don’t push yourself, either. Sometimes you have to remove yourself from a problem temporarily to solve it, just don’t give up drawing altogether.
TL;DR feeling like your drawing is stagnating/getting worse means your eye is improving, and your hands are likely to catch up soon.
