Some modern áo dài looks like they are modernized straight from the source, as if the French influence was never there in the first place. These áo dài give the sense of 21st century style, but it also becomes much more traditional than the supposedly traditional áo dài.

A beautiful example is shown by a photographer named W. The model gives a 21st century look of East Asian women, from her hairstyle to her accessory. Her modernized áo dài, however, exudes a sense of Nguyễn fashion: instead of the raglan sleeves from the west, it’s the traditional buttons of the east (there’s still raglan sleeves, but it’s too subtle to notice); instead of body-hugging waist from the west, it’s the loose and comfortable design of the east; instead of the mandarin collar imported from China, it’s the traditional short collar of Vietnam.
