Summary for the accompanying story Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea:
After the fight in New York, Sam needs some time to recuperate from the confrontation with the Flag Smashers. He decides to take the Paul & Darlene out to the ocean, and on Sarah‘s suggestion, lets his cyborg partner tag along, too.
Just a couple of guys, alone on a boat, for two weeks. What could possibly go wrong?
Excerpt:
He can’t quite remember the last time he had one of the nightmares. Sam has been doing so much better lately, especially since returning to his hometown. But tonight is one of those nights where the past rears its ugly head - a night where he is plagued by the worst memories of his life.
In his dream, he watches helplessly as his partner plummets to his death, Riley‘s scream ringing in his ear. Or maybe it's Sam himself who is screaming. He can‘t quite tell.
Suddenly a warm hand wraps around him, and he is pulled into a tight hug. A soft voice is whispering into his ear. Sam isn‘t quite lucid enough to realize what‘s going on. Is he still dreaming?
