i can understand changing elements of a story for an adaption (and im a big advocate for this! no adaptation can or should ever strive to be completely faithful to its source material) however. cutting the nobody part from the odyssey is a huge indicator that you have fundamentally misunderstood odysseus as a character i fear

i so deeply disagree lol. "fundamentally misunderstood odysseus as a character" you're ascribing authorial intent to an ancient poem told through hundreds of years of oral tradition before it was eventually written down in an ancient, long-dead language that is only understood through the multitude of translations made of it, each of which imbibes the text with its own intentions and assumptions about its lead character. nolan having a different interpretation of odysseus to your pre conceived idea of odysseus is not a "fundamental misunderstanding." it is an adaptation which is interested in different ideas about what the character of odysseus embodies, and if you don't like those ideas or find them interesting, then sure, that's worth interrogating. but saying that cutting the "nobody" line from the movie of the odyssey means that the entire project is tainted by misunderstanding odysseus, is like. odysseus according to who?! emily wilson? robert fagles? james joyce? you??? okay????????

sorry to call out this post specifically but there about 3000 posts in the 'the odyssey' tag on tumblr that are making criticism of this film so shallow as to be effectively saying nothing omfg.

fr and genuinely i loved the odyssey so much (spoilers in the tags)

#saw it last night and it hasn't left my mind once i literally woke up thinking about it #which like obviously this is already in my interest set. i have a degree that says CLASSICS on the piece of paper. so ymmv on the resonance #but i LOVE THE ODYSSEY like the poem by homer i genuinely love it it shaped so much of my understanding of story and art and narrative #it was so formative to my interest in history and mythology #and the movie is about all the parts that I LOVE AND FIND INTERESTING #it understands the power of a story and of THIS story #and it puts its own interpretation on to parts of it and it makes changes and choices #and the more i think about them the more i really just. actually love what this movie has to say.#bc it does have a lot to say!!!#and i think some of the really big captiol-c Choices made might not be obvious if you aren't very familiar w the poem #but imo those choices are drawing on themes that exist in the work and in the original 'text' (to the extent that it is text #which is a related but whole other discussion)#in a way that i just really really fuck with overall #and also just like. what a MOVIE.#the cinematography the performances the battles the locations the SCORE! i'm so glad this is a Christopher Nolan Film #i'm not a nolan die hard by any means he's honestly kinda 50/50 for me but this is like. the movie he was meant to make.#and look i still have criticisms!!! it sands off some edges of odysseus's character specifically in a way that felt very Hollywood to me #and i have some nitpicks about pacing in the second act particularly #but overall just like ... wow i really do care about this story so much #but i have been optimistic since this movie was announced about it #and i feel very vindicated #but again i mean. i am sitting in my living room rn looking at my bookshelf and i count ... 18? books directly in my line of sight #that are either depicting or discussing or reinterpreting greek and roman mythology #i have a huge amphora tattooed on my arm. this IS my shit. so i am not an objective party.#but wow i am so glad to have loved it #ALSO - elliot page isn't in the movie long enough to really have a sincere shot at supporting actor oscar #but idc. give it to him. the emotional turn of the movie relies on him and he is perfect.#john leguizamo has a a bigger role and SHOULD at least be nominated #robert pattinson and samantha morton also standouts. also john bernthal as menelaus INSPIRED casting lol.#also the travis scott cameo is like. perfect to me.
