   “You’re such a nerd.” Caroline couldn’t lie and say he didn’t make her smile. He picked at her but she wouldn’t trade him for the world, even if other people liked to tell her how she should live her life when it came to him. “I’m either head over heels or I’ve just gotten so comfortable with this.” She teased and tapped her fingers on his side.

 “Snoring isn’t sexy.” Caroline gave him a look and shook her head. “You just like to pick at me. I drooled in my sleep one time and now i can never live anything else down. It isn’t like I drooled on anyone but my pillow.”

     “caroline…” theo spoke with a sigh, producing his phone from his pocket. “i knew you wouldn’t believe me, so i recorded it. so, you have the choice – either you believe me that you’ve been snoring last night and accept it, or you listen to the recording and your embarrassment about it will be five hundred times bigger.”

  “We can’t prove that would even be me at all.” Caroline refused to accept it. Nope. Not happening. “I have never snored in my life. Okay, maybe once when I had the flu but I sleep quietly and like a little angel. I refuse to believe this blasphemy.”

     theo would be lying if he said that he was a hundred percent certain he would make it out alive. their was no certainty. the hunters were strong, and they were many, and then there was the anuk-ite. he reached for her hands and took them into his, pulling her a bit closer and leaning his forehead against hers. “… i promise i’ll do anything to come back to you.” that’s all he could promise. “i know it’s hard for you to get it into your head, but this is a situation you don’t have any control over, and that’s not your fault. having you on the battlefield would only be even more dangerous for me. i’d have to worry about keeping myself safe, and about keeping you safe as well. it’s a lot easier if you stay here, where no one can hurt you, and the possibility is a lot higher that i will come back alive.”

   A liability. Caroline was always a damn liability. She hadn’t been cold enough for her father, she was too curious for her mother, and she couldn’t fight as strong as her friends. And moments like this were the prime examples at how she wasn’t good enough, and that made her angry. She had to help somehow, and she would. Even if she just had to use her brain before she used her body to get things done. While they were fighting she’d be planning, looking for weaknesses and taking control in one way or another. She looked at him and took a deep breath. “I get it. I’m not good enough to fight. I never am.” She shrugged her shoulder. She didn’t like having to sit it out, and she was about to take a note out of the Allison handbook and big fat do it anyway. “Be careful.” She bit onto her bottom lip. “I love you. And I will be damned if I lose anyone else I love.”

      Did she scream? Caroline was woman enough to admit that she did let out a small girlish shriek at being caught unaware when she didn’t hear anyone in the room. It was a natural reaction. But Theo was good at sneaking up on her in general so she shouldn’t have been surprised she wouldn’t hear him. And the towel was almost to the floor, what if that had been someone else?

        “Sh-”

      Her teeth dug into her bottom lip to hold the expletive in before her eyes fell to the Chimera, her heart slowly going back to a normal resting heart rate.

       “Stop trying to get free peeks! I could have peed myself, that is the opposite of sexy. “
