Loneliness is a special kind of illness. It can be loud or soft. There are no right or wrong symptoms and finding a cure is easier said than done, but when one is found, I think it surprises us. Like, how quickly we can mend our wounds or how long it takes to find the places that hurt the most.

I’ve been really depressed lately from all the different things that have taken place in my life these last few months and honestly feeling very alone, especially the last two days. It has been a real roller coaster for me and even though it’s been extremely difficult there is a small part of me that is really fighting to get to a happier place. 

Logging onto Tumblr/Twitter and seeing all the #Blackout selfies, videos and stories have been really uplifting. Dealing with depression/anxiety can be isolating in itself and as black person, specifically a black woman it can feel extra isolating when you are made constantly aware of how some of the world perceives you and how people treat you. I know we have MLK Day, Black History Month, etc. but it feels really nice to have a day outside of all that to really celebrate ourselves and feel celebrated just because we can. I don’t touch upon race too much on my blog but I didn’t want to ignore this, I didn’t want to go without acknowledging this moment, especially when it came at a time where I needed it most. When I was younger it was more of a struggle than it is now but coming from a mixed family I sometimes felt it was difficult for other black people to embrace me. A lot of it probably being the 90’s/00’s and stereotypes and the internet not being what it is today… I felt shut out a bit. It didn’t bother me too much but I was always aware. In my adult life, I feel more of an embrace and an understanding from a community I felt didn’t know what to make of me.

Even though I’m still growing and finding myself I am really proud of where I come from and who I am and the togetherness days like today bring.
