The Hero and the Evil Dragon - Conqueror and Conquered
Not really a theory, but more of a discussion. About genshin's narrative. About heroes and evil dragons.

To most of Teyvat, the traveler is the shining hero. Helping them at every turn. But to every story there is more than one side.
The people of Teyvat, whom the traveler is helping, have enemies. The Abyss. Brought by Nibelung, the dragon king. And by extension the dragons themselves can be considered enemies. Subdued by Phanes to make Teyvat for the humans.
The dragons are the native inhabitants of Teyvat, born of the planet itself. Conquered for the sake of humanity. Antagonized as "evil dragons" most of the time. But what made them evil? Is the dragon evil for protecting his hoard? Is the dragon evil for wanting back his home? Or is the dragon evil for simply existing?
Humans are far too quick to dismiss another human's wrongdoings if they deem the reason sufficient. Most of Teyvat thinks this way. (even most Dain discussions go this way too.) But anytime a dragon is brought up in Teyvat, the word "evil" soon follows. They are rarely forgiven or shown any sort of understanding.
The concept that is Durin, the "evil dragon" is proof of that. They killed him to make story Durin human... To make him "human". Being a dragon was not good enough. And original Durin was condemned as evil, despite many stories showing he was an innocent child who knew no better and was simply treated horribly. No different than Elynas. (Don't let his story quest fool you, "evil" is simply the humans' opinion, and genshin loves to play the unreliable narrator. History is written by the victors, after all.) Twisted by abyssal energy does not mean the very essence of him is evil. If he were a human child back then, this would not have been their attitude towards him now at all. The concept that is Dainsleif is proof of that.
Besides, what makes humans humans and dragons dragons? What does it mean to be human? Is it their form? Their intelligence? Their emotions? Dragons have superior intellect, seem to be more empathetic, and can change their form through evolution. Some have even acquired a human form. So what makes them "evil dragons"? I know it is not their actions, as the humans have proved to be more evil and cruel in this story if you look at the greater picture.
So if the traveler is ignorantly on the side of whomever asks for their help first, usually the Archon's side, then what does that make them? Definitely not a hero...
Fighting every faction that is not aligned to the Archons' people, without even understanding the situation. Abyss, abyss order, Fatui, treasure hoarders, whatever. The Archon and their people want them gone? Then the traveler is there to do it.
Maybe the abyss order knows that Teyvat is ending so they are attempting to change that? Maybe the abyss's will is actually Nibelung's will and it is trying to help the dragons reclaim Teyvat? Maybe the Fatui realized the wrongs of Celestia and are trying to bring back the "old world" as Pierro said? The one belonging to the dragons according to "before sun and moon".
Does the traveler care for any of these reasons, should they be true? Does the traveler care to even ask? Not at all apparently. Just "slay the evil dragon" and "become the hero" is all they do.
Slay the evil... but what is truly evil? In a world where every right and wrong is subjective, is there something that is purely "evil" and nothing else?
The hero and evil dragon are just two sides of the same coin. Which is which depends entirely on who you ask.
Therefore, in my humble opinion, the traveler, in their ignorance, has become the true villain to a lot of factions on Teyvat. Including the dragons. Those whose homeland was taken by force.
In a story like this, I'd rather slay the hero and become the evil dragon.
I've seen people be mad that Genshin is calling Dragonspine Durin both an Evil Dragon and like that of an innocent child (usually complaining of the villainization of the later than the woobification of the former, especially when referring to how Storybook Durin essentially replaces him) and.
He can be both. Guys, he is both.
He was an innocent child who thought a battle to the death was just playful dancing. He thought he and Dvalin were friends right as Dvalin killed him. He wished for a better future without him because he realized in death that his very existence was a calamity upon the world.
He wasn't evil and malicious by nature, but he was destructive in nature--which isn't his fault! But he still hurt so many lives just. By existing. It doesn't matter his intentions or perspective. Living things died because of him. The nation most hurt by his calamity is going to be angry and upset about it.
Just because someone accidentally broke your arm doesn't make that arm any less broken.
Also: Dragonspine Durin's coordinated attack on Mondstadt makes total sense when you remember that he thought a battle to the death was just a dance. To him, he was likely just playing a game! That or what the game is calling "Dragonspine Durin" in that storyline is actually the malice of the Abyss, which would absolve DS Durin of that completely if it was just abyssal malice mistakened to be DS Durin.
Either way--Genshin is notorious for conflicting information because of its many unreliable narrators. The witches say DS Durin was like that of an innocent child, Mondstadters claim he was an evil dragon--we don't actually know the truth here because every party is biased for one reason or another.
We'll only ever get to know the truth if we actually see things from DS Durin's perspective.
Also, to touch upon SB Durin replacing DS Durin--I think it can be viewed as a tragedy, sure--but the heart of DS Durin still resides on SB Durin's new body, and I think that means something.
The most alive thing about DS Durin, taken and placed into the body of a self that was created solely to experience what he couldn't--I think it's tragic that he couldn't experience this in his own life, but he is still a part of SB Durin's new body--in Durin's SQ, destroying DS Durin's heart leads to SB Durin following his footsteps and becoming "Evil" just like him. I think that's important to consider--and to remember that SB Durin and DS Durin, both inside of Playable Durin, are fighting their fate.
And Tragic or not... there's hope in that. DS Durin, SB Durin--they get to experience writing their own story as Playable Durin. Maybe one isn't as conscious about it as the other, but both are, inherently, there.
