CafĂŠ or Cabaret de LâEnfer (Hellâs CafĂŠ), Paris, late 19th century. A hot spot called Hellâs CafĂŠ lured 19th-century Parisians to the cityâs Montmartre neighborhood - like the Marais - on the Right Bank of the Seine. With plaster lost souls writing on its walls and a bug-eyed devilâs head for a front door, le CafĂŠ de l'Enfer may have been one of the worldâs first theme restaurants. According to one 1899 visitor, the cafĂŠâs doorman - in a Satan suit - welcomed diners with the greeting, âEnter and be damned!â Hellâs waiters also dressed as devils. An order for three black coffees spiked with cognac was shrieked back to the kitchen as: âThree seething bumpers of molten sins, with a dash of brimstone intensifier!â

In his vibrantly colored paintings and sculptures, Colin OâCon presents viewers with representations of nature. He views nature as a description and it is this description or representation of which he is interested in most. His fluorescent palette appears at times otherworldly or manufactured because we sometimes forget just how odd nature itself is.

International Womenâs Day poster from 1975, printed by the Womenâs Graphics Collective, in our @cooperhewitt.
Four Chicago-based women designers founded the group in 1970, bringing together women designers and activists to produce art that advanced the goals of the womenâs movement. More about the poster and their organization.
Freedom process. Taking time, always painful and hard. But once one overcomes his insecurities, one becomes strong and free !
