Gale has some fantastic lines, he says interesting and funny stuff during your travels, he has a great character arch. I don't mind sacrificing petty trinkets to keep him from blowing up. I often times appreciate his info dumping as is leads to an easier way of completing quests. He's undoubtedly one of the most compassionate and understanding of your companions. Gale is a great, well written character.
And
I was also immediately turned off by him when he claimed my Tav was not versed in magic despite, you know, being a caster. It often comes off as being talked down too rather than hyper-fixated info dumping. I felt really uncomfortable during his "let me teach you some magic" bit and the incantations create an aphrodisiac. He has the energy of a man who would unironically do the little toothy side smile, one finger swooping into the air, followed by a "well, actually..." I admit since first reading the player's handbook, I simply do not vibe with wizards. From Volo to Elminster, even extending into Caleb from Critical Role (a character it took me a really long time to like despite being absolutely incredible). Wizards don't do it for me. I know I really don't have a leg to stand on cause I still fuck with Astarion despite the everything about him, but at least there are in game options to let him know he's made you uncomfortable and crossed a line. Hells, you have the option to stake him three times during his first bite scene. Aside from telling Gale to go blow up, there's no, "hey man, please don't have me cast shit that will magically make me want to kiss you that's just a touch predatory"
Perhaps all this just comes down to "autistic scapegoat meets autistic golden child" and his little, "You're not versed in magic, are you?" line despite--again--casting right before his very eyes, did not help that dynamic. I want to like Gale but just....don't.
I was gonna leave this alone lest I turn into the "well, actually-" guy myself, but you *did* say in the tags that you wanted to know if you were missing something so here goes (hopefully this doesn't come across as condescending, I honestly don't mean it to)-
the magical aphrodisiac thing, while I can definitely understand being seriously put off by it when you think that's what's going on, is not actually what's going on at all. the "anticipation of a kiss" is you picking up on his and Mystra's (former) relationship feelings. if you go all the way through the scene and pick the "show him you want to kiss him" option, he's genuinely startled, albeit (assuming you have a good approval rating) happy about it. I guess I *could* be misinterpreting the scene, but I really don't think that's the response of someone who's just magically roofied you.
as for the wizard arrogance - I mean, yeah, you're right. it's part of the character archetype and he definitely wouldn't be in the situation he's in at the start of the game without it. as far as the "versed in magic" bit goes, though, I will point out that if you call him on it with one of the caster class dialogue options, he does apologize and clarify that he meant he needed to talk to someone with *academic* knowledge of magic and that while you are indeed just as magical as him, that's not you. even a wizard Tav isn't going to be "fix a problem that stumped an archmage" levels of learned, after all
totally fair if he just rubs you the wrong way tho, no character is going to appeal to everyone
Thank you for this! Honestly truly! The context of his magical tutelage igniting residual feelings for Mystra softens the interaction (I never initiated the kiss so had no idea he was taken aback) but it also compounds the "you're not over your shitty ex" problem. I think if I made an honest attempt at his romance I'd really come to like him but as it stands it's a set of issues that don't translate well to a relationship for me. And I do want to emphasize FOR ME. He's attractive and charming; It is unsurprising people gravitate towards him. FOR ME (as it stands), he's not my cup of tea.
Welp...I got curious enough to complete Gale's romance. He's still insufferable and sooo pathetic. 10/10 would romance again
"Friends outside of Minnesota please read. I'm sharing a post written by a personal friend and medical doctor: Friends outside MN, you need to know what is happening here. Everyone knows that ICE shot and killed a woman here on Wednesday. But that’s not the only thing that’s going on:
ICE agents are cruising areas with immigrant-owned businesses, and kidnapping patrons and employees alike. Yesterday they abducted two US citizen employees at a suburban Target, one who was begging them to allow him to go get his passport to show them.
ICE is going door to door in immigrant-heavy neighborhoods, asking residents where their immigrant neighbors live. Read that again. If it sounds like something out of your high school history textbook, that’s because it is.
ICE is targeting schools and school buses. They pepper sprayed teenagers and abducted two school staff members at the high school up the street from me on Wednesday. Police are literally escorting school buses to ensure children can get to school and home safely. The Minneapolis Public Schools have moved to virtual learning for the next 4 weeks because it’s unsafe for children or teachers to physically come to school.
They are targeting hospitals and clinics. Patients are scared and are cancelling their appointments or just not showing up. Kids are missing their checkups and vaccines, folks aren’t getting their cancer care, etc.
They are smashing windows in cars and homes.
ICE is increasingly picking up Native Americans—again, targeting folks based on skin color alone.
They are arresting and beating legal observers. A friend of a friend had her arm broken yesterday. Folks are showing up at local hospitals, brought in in ICE custody, with severe injuries that are absolutely inconsistent with mechanism of injury reported by ICE. (Think: patient appears to have been beaten unconscious, while ICE agent says he slipped and fell.) I can’t emphasize enough that these ICE agents do not have warrants. There are 2,000+ agents here and they are simply hunting for anyone that’s not white. It doesn’t matter if you’re a citizen or a green card holder, they will kidnap you first and ask questions later. But the community is fighting back.
Protests are happening every day.
Community groups have been leading know-your-rights sessions for months, often to packed venues.
Whistles are being distributed by the thousands, carried on keychains and worn on coat zippers, always at the ready to be blown in warning if ICE is spotted.
Drivers are following ICE vehicles, blaring their horns in warning.
Businesses are locking their doors even while open to keep employees and customers safe. As I type this, I’m standing guard at the locked door of our neighborhood burrito joint while I wait for my takeout order, so the employees can focus on their jobs. The place is packed with neighbors supporting this small business.
Anti-ICE signs are posted everywhere. The community is making it crystal clear that ICE is not welcome here.
Parents and neighbors are standing guard outside schools, organizing carpools, and escorting kids to and from school on foot.
Parents of kids in Spanish-immersion daycare (there are a LOT of these daycares here!) are keeping their kids home so the teachers don’t have to take the risk of coming to work.
Churches and community groups are holding fundraisers to buy and deliver groceries to families who don’t feel safe leaving home.
Mutual aid money is going out to folks who can’t make rent because they can’t work or because a breadwinner was abducted, or who need a warm place to stay after their home’s windows were smashed. THAT is what is happening here. This fight is ongoing and it’s horrifying to watch. But we are not backing down. To my friends in other cities and states, don’t think for a minute that this won’t happen in your town. It will. Be ready. Learn from us, as we have learned from Portland and Chicago and New York. Fight back. Don’t let us get to the last line of Martin Niemoller’s poem.” -Grant Boulanger
Yeah I said something similar yesterday but we can NOT let what happened to Renee Good cloud what happened to everyone else at the hands of these SS Demons!!!
Because we can’t disregard one person if we’re for human rights!
DO NOT SUPPORT SALVATION ARMY
I can back this up. It isn’t only their shelters.
I have a family friend who worked at our local Salvation Army headquarters as a a secretary. This particular office took all the Christmas donations for children in need, put them in a warehouse, and on a designated day the staff and their friends picked through them all, taking whatever they wanted. She saw people hauling away bikes donated for specific families. Some local children had hundreds of dollars of gifts donated in their name, and on Christmas they received three cheap things, items likely not even from the person who sponsored them.
My friend quit, and I’ve not given them a dime of my money since then.
Do not give to the Salvation Army.
Do Not. Give. To. Salvation. Army
My turn.
I’m a wildfire and disaster logistics specialist.
I deal with a lot of agencies who provide disaster relief.
I used to say the Salvation Army’s disaster services were the one (literally the ONE) good thing they did.
They would come in, set up a canteen trailer, make and pass out hot coffee and donated food in a disaster, usually being one of the first agencies to get there and the last to leave.
Then I found out.
Every time they did this, regardless of if they were actually invited or deployed by the agency in charge (usually FEMA, sometimes others) they would SELF-DEPLOY. Meanjng they would just show up. Ok. That’s not TOO bad, sometimes agencies have to take initiative and get there before the red tape is sorted out. BUT. They, after they left at the end of the incident, they would send FEMA or the host agency a BILL. They used one or two paid employees (usually the driver of the truck and a supervisor); and many VOLUNTEERS, but they would bill for EVERYONE’s Labor at standard federal rates. They would bill for the food they distributed even though it was all donated by another agency or private parties. They would bill for the coffee they made and the supplies. Except they would use electricity from the shelter location, water from donations or from the shelter, and in many cases, they would get the coffee and industrial filters DONATED, but bill for them at retail prices.
Don’t FUCKING give to the Salvation Army.
The Salvation Army is also ass to the workers. A good number of people join it, naively thinking that it’s doing good, and end up leaving cynical and beaten down. The management is hostile, if not outright abusive, and demand some ridiculous hours of it lower to mid-level staff. Don’t support these people.
Unsettling update
Find better local charities and shelters and give to them instead!
Also just for even more horrific context on the original twitter thread?
Salvation Army reached out to Milknmuffins and asked what shelter she’s at with the promise to address the abuse in it. She…ended up saying where she was. She was thrown out onto the street. It’s also all on Twitter.
They invited her to a personal talk so she could explain the situation in person.
And then they threatened her with a screenshot of a rape-threat made supposedly by her:
And then threw her out into the street while claiming she broke house rules that
So yeah, the Salvation Army is a bunch of entitled assholes that will treat the most vulnerable like shit if they dare try to do anything that makes them look bad
The “Fuck Salvation Army” posts are making the rounds again, so conisder this your reminder: Do. Not. Give. These. Assholes. A. Single. Fucking. Penny.
Do not support them in any way, shape, or form.
‘Tis the season to say FUCK the Salvation Army.
If you see the timestamp and think ‘maybe the Salvos got better in the last 8 years’ no. No they didn’t. Actually they got worse. DON’T GIVE TO THE SALVOS. THEYPISS ALL THEIR MONEY UP THE WALL ON THE CORPORATE END AND DO LITTLE TO NOTHING TO HELP WHO THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO HELP.
if you want to help homeless people go and find a homeless person and hand them the money you were going to give a charity. That will help more than giving any amount to charity. Just go and hand it to the person in need directly. Cut out the middle man. Stop being a coward and get to know your homeless neighbours.
also get engaged in on-the-ground mutual aid (which will also help you get to know your homeless neighbors)
Solidarity, not charity. Mutual Aid Disaster Relief is a grassroots disaster relief network based on the principles of solidarity, m
It feels like this is the biggest story to still be flying relatively under the radar in the anglophone press. If a single phonecall from a racist pig American can get hundreds of your senior engineers and their families, who are only there to oversee factory construction up to spec, rounded up and sent to the Gestapo torture dungeons then suddenly it's an open question if any Korean, Japanese (and indeed eventually potentially even European) firm will ever feel safe directly investing in the US ever again
It's time to kill ICE
As a surgeon, I volunteered at a Gaza hospital. The conditions were unthinkable. With a ground offensive in Rafah, people have nowhere to go
