My group declared war on Strahd last session. They tried to kill Volenta in the middle of Vallaki. They finally convinced Rahadin to turn against Strahd breaking his blood oath. After sessions of work and bonding, Rahadin is now standing at their side ready to aid in the battle against Strahd. The skys darkened and lighting crackled across teh sky as Strahd appeared on the back of Bucephalus. He had heated words with the party and something finally snapped with an insult from our paladin. The moon turned red and war was declared. The blood moon rose.
Before they could react, Strahd set the Bluewater inn ablaze with a high level fireball before smirking and flying away. We ended session.
Now for the most recent session. The Martikovs, Ezmeralda, Izek, Lydia Petrovna, Gaston, Edward Skelehands and Carl the wizard were in the tavern at the time. The flames rose as the party and a mysterious newcommer tried to save who they could. Our paladin used his body to shield Lydia and almost died doing it. Danika died shielding Urwin from the fire, our monk who was like her son finally snapping out of his fallen status and becoming a scrourage aasimar.
The party barely made it out before Blinsky, Victor and a racoon ran up to them with Blinsky screaming about getting out of Vallaki in my best Mario voice (it took my party 20 minutes to recover from the sheer whiplash XD).
Lady Wachter showed up with her cultists and told the party to get out of town and that it was her town now. They almost refused before she said Strahd was coming back and they went to get out of dodge asap. As they left, dragons happened. Strahd aboard a large shadow dragon smirked at the party before yelling Dracarys and unleashing the shadow dragon's special breath weapon. A blast that turns anything it kills into shadows. A large portion of Vallakians were transformed into shadow versions of themselves as the party was forced to flee.
They actually left very quickly which surprised me because they are usually so sassy and fearless.
So now the party on the run. Ez told them to head to VanRichten's tower. There was a theater of the mind scene with shadow monsters and the Wendigo attacking the carriage. The paladin gave Ireena the Sunsword to use and our monk used the Symbol of Ravenkind to figth it off.
We got the tower and ended session with the group camping after they confirmed the stranger with them was a woman looking to kill Strahd for kidnapping her friend.
Everyone set up tents and had a long rest.
Our group count including refugees is the pcs (monk, paladin, wizard, bard and fighter), Ireena, Lorena, Urwin, the kids, Blinsky, Victor, Lydia, Izek, Yennefer (mysterious lady), a racoon that came out of an amulet (and is secretly a dragon), Picolo, Gaston, Edward Skelehands and Ez.
The party npcs were only added because my players refused to let me leave them anywhere (Rahadin and Ireena are my players' favs with Rahadin being designated grumpy dad/old man). They made it to Van Richten's tower and intend to set up camp.
