as someone who unknowingly struggled with ADHD their entire life and is now facing many unwanted realizations, dream’s experience and outspoken nature when it comes to having ADHD means so much. he talks about stories quite often: how he was a troublemaker, how he skipped school, how he failed classes, put his parents through a lot of stress… he acknowledges everything– every struggle–and as someone who is filled with disgust and shame for how i do nothing but disappoint others, it feels like i’m being shown that it’ll be okay for the first time.
for so long, i felt like i had dug myself in this bottomless hole with no end in sight. i tried clawing my way out by working twice as hard as other people. i dedicated myself to overworking because i knew if i slipped up, that hole would be waiting for me. failure loomed over my head; i thought i was destined for it. eventually, i gave up. failed, then failed again. fucked up to the point where i thought: this is it. this is all you’ll ever be. i was always looking down at that bottomless pit, because i thought i had to.
but dream tells people to look up. he reminds people that there’s always a way out, no matter what. he is unashamedly optimistic. he solves any problem that comes his way, both in and out of the games he plays. he always speaks from the heart and from experience, as someone who has also messed up time and time again. dream doesn’t just say “it gets better” as some sort of vague and false hope—he says it because he is living proof of that fact.
over the past two months since i have joined this fandom, i’ve found that many people outside of it have such a deep-seated hatred for dream, more than anyone else in mcyt. they hate that he has found such success in such a short time, from a kid’s game of all things. but i never chose to stay because of the content alone; i chose to stay because, as silly as it is, he makes me want to try. that’s why i like dream.
it’s a damn shame that no one on the outside gets to see that side of him. because that’s the side i love the most.
