Cana’s smile instantly dropped. Evidently it hadn’t been a safe question to start with. If anything she had begun with a horrible question. It was obvious that he hadn’t wanted to answer it. Who wanted to admit they had no place to call home? Not her, not anyone.
Her gaze fell back to the table. She held back every heavy sigh attempting to escape. Well, now what? The conversation had started on such a low note. The awkward silence was beginning to bleed into the room again.
Her plastic fork poked the small servings of vegetables. Whatever appetite she may have had was waning fast. The knots in her stomach were too tight. “Ah, I see…” It was a weak comment but the only one should could give.
Thoughts raced back and forth in her skull. Something, something, there had to be something! “Ah… Then… Perhaps I could ask something simple? It feels a tad silly but… Maybe something like your favorite color? Or favorite season?”
It felt as though she were asking questions for a worthless personality quiz in a cheap magazine. But maybe, hopefully, these questions would steer things in a lighter direction.
At least those got a little chuckle out of Kao; he could tell that she was trying to make some conversation with him, which was nice of her. He noticed how fidgety she seemed asking them, and he pitied her a little bit over how awkward she made herself in front of him. Part of him wanted to play along with her and have a friendly conversation, make her feel at ease, and spare her from his true feelings...
“Oh, those? Mmm, something like a dark purple would be my favorite. And I like summer a lot. Can’t get enough of that bright summer sun, ya know?” He answered her, smiling a bit to make her feel more relaxed. A voice inside yelled at him to keep focus, but for now, he could probably stand to keep them bottled up a little bit more...
“I mean, I don’t have anything against the snow and all, but I just like things warmer.”
