One common trait you’ll find with nearly all villains is a vested interest in power and control.
Now, at first, you may not think that’s entirely true. There are villains who crave money, or thrills, or even a desire to tear apart power and control. Indeed, what drives a villain is frequently far more flexible than what will drive the heroes they combat. But once you really look at things, you start to realize just how reasonable that statement is. A villain who seeks money loves the sense of power and control that money can give them; they may not spend it on stately mansions or high-tech gadgets, but the money itself gives them something other people simply don’t have, and they can use it as they please. A villain who does what they do because they find it fun or exciting loves the adrenaline rush; they have the choice of what is most entertaining to them, and they have the power to live as freely as they like. As for villains who live to tear things apart and destroy established stations of power and control…honestly, how much more power and control can one person have than when they are DESTROYING the very constructs that create order? It’s a paradox such antagonists never seem to comprehend.
Bottom line: what motivates a villain will always be different, but the root of it all – nine times out of ten – comes down to one simple word: dominancy.
When one is running a literal School of Villains – such as that of Night Raven College – that desire for dominancy, that love of superiority, has to be tamed. After all, if you didn’t have SOME means of keeping control yourself, you’d have students killing, maiming, stealing from, and maybe even EATING each other left, right, and center. While the mysterious Headmaster Crowley was (by his own frequent admission) a gracious man, he and the staff of Night Raven kept a strict eye on the rules. It was hard for some of the many dark wizards training for a career in black magic at the college to truly establish themselves as the “alphas” at the academy, as a result.
Sure, you COULD decapitate or devour your fellow classmates – you certainly had the ABILITY – but there was no point in such uncivilized behavior when you were dealing with far more experienced dark mages than yourself. From voodoo witch doctors to a man whose name literally sounded like “Diverse Cruelty,” there was a reason you did NOT want to get on their bad side.
Therefore, in situations where power struggles were particularly problematic, students had to find less…unsavory ways of hashing out their dominant streaks.
This led, more often than not…to absolute, total silliness.
And that is why you are here. You are interested in the unknown, the mysterious, the unexplainable. Yes, that is why you are here.
