On this Day in Valois History: June 30, 1559—King Henry II was fatally injured in tournaments (celebrating peace with Habsburgs, the marriage of his daughter Elizabeth to the King of Spain, and the betrothal of his sister, Marguerite, to Emmanuel-Philbert Duc of Savoy). The King regained consciousness rather quickly after his injury. 5 large splinters were removed from his head after his injury, without anesthetic. Yet the King cried out only once. The largest of these had struck his forehead above the right eyebrow and pierced his left eye. On July 1st Henri rallied, and he was subsequently able to sleep eat and drink. In fact on July 2nd and 3rd he dictated letters and ordered his sister’s wedding. But late in the day on July 4th the King developed a fever and then rapidly lost his sight and speech. Last Rites were administered on July 9th and King Henri II died the next day. He is reign over France had lasted for 12 years and he was 40 years old. Catherine de Médicis was devastated. She wore BLACK for the REST OF HER LIFE (eschewing the traditional French color of morning for queens – white)
