Official Vegimal Redesigns 2026

The Vegimals are a strange, yet beautiful, creation of Mother Nature. Their species is by far the first recorded example of a diverse cross between plant and animal DNA. Their species first documented and studied by my colleague and crewmate, Professor Shellington Mellegan, who by all accounts, has become a sort of father figure to them in all respects.
When they first appeared they were merely hatchlings! Each egg forming in two's, except for one which happened to be the very first to hatch! Each one took after it's own respective fish and plant, despite the existence of each pair. Shellington deemed the phenomenon as some kind of fraternal twin bond. Based on that theory it made sense why each pair was closer to one another than others within the clutch.
Shellington had discovered them on a brisk November morning in 2018 just a few month after we began training the new crew. The clutch had been attached to the leg of the Octopod, perhaps placed there intentionally by the mother for safe keeping.
However, both he and I have suspected overtime that they appeared there by accident seeing as no mother, of such an intelligent species, would intentionally lay their young in such dangerous waters.
The Vegimals, as we have named them, have always been a source of joy within this small crew. Despite how young they are, they have grown to an incredible size and intelligence within such a short amount of time! (In fact Tunip is nearly as tall as I am now!)
I am keen on documenting their progress for my journals, and for the history of this crew, seeing as they have already made themselves apart of our little family. In all my years as an Octonaut, I have never seen anything bring a crew together so quickly, than these little creatures. Especially when those creatures seem to have opinions on who their favorite Octonaut it.
Already I've been teaching Tunip cook and bake, and with the curiosity of the others I'm sure they'll follow along as well! There's still two eggs to hatch, but I'm sure in time we'll get to welcome them into our little family.

Has a deep fascination with Captain Barnacles' role, & has stated in previous interactions that he wishes to be a great leader just like his hero (sob)
Vocals: (Main) Tenor -> Countertenor (actually has the largest rang of any of the vegimals and can even reach a deeper Bass than even Grouber)
Head in the "Vegimal Choir"

Master Gardener: In charge of food stores & kitchen stocking (Likes to sneak Grouber snacks)
Loves to play instruments (Banjo, Guitar, Harmonica, Jug, Piano, Accordion (yes he's better at it than Barnacles lol) etc)
Vocals: Southern Twang/Baritone (similar to Tweak's accent)

Head of "Food Inspection" (aka Resident "Taste Tester")
Biggest of the Vegimals (due to his continuously growing size, Grouber requires a lot of food to keep up himself at a healthy weight, however Shellington has recently placed him on a small diet to keep him from over-eating on sweets)

Middle Child alongside her brother Halibeet
Resident Chaos Enforcer (Tunip's worse nightmare in the field, super clumsy too - Most likely to have ADHD)
Master Baker (Tunip's #1 in the Kitchen)
Loves Dancing/Martial Arts (Especially Ballet/Karate, wants to be a "Ballerina Karate Ninja" when she grows up)

Middle Child alongside his sister Codish
(His egg was attacked just before Shellington was able to retrieve it, causing the scars you see on his tail and several on his chest & back. His sister Codish has become his loyal protector, especially when his anxiety comes in. When danger is near he tends to freeze up & is unable to protect himself or even react to the danger itself. Shellington believes that somehow he remembers the attack on his egg even before he was hatched)
Currently learning medicine under Peso (Wants to become a nurse when he grows up)

Autistic [ Selective Mutism ]
(Requires Headphones to socialize, gets very overstimulated if he goes without them for too long)
Loves creating replicas (Trains, Planes, Ships, Tiny Towns, etc.)
(I promise I'm not coming for anyone, I made him love trains WAYYYY before I ever decided upon the Autism. If you like trains I think you're awesome, because I love trains too! They're super cool and if you have any train facts you want to share please do!!!)
Very "Tech Savvy" (He and Sharchini are Tweak's little assistants and they were the brains behind creating Vegi-Bot - Wants to do what Tweak does)
Vocals: Tenor -> Countertenor (When he does actually speak/sing)

Second Youngest alongside his brother Perchkin
Autistic (He gets overstimulated too, but it's not as frequent as Perchkin. He's able to go longer stretches without "quiet time", his speech is more developed than his brother's)
More "Build Savvy" (He does the heavy lifting/welding/putting together, while Perchkin does the electronics)
Wants to be an Auto Shop Repair Mechanic when he grows up (or something along the lines of what Tweak does)

Youngest of the Vegimals alongside his sister Tominnow (who was the last to be hatched)
Wants to be a Stock Car Racer or "Lightning Macqueen" (Loves anything to do with cars, racing, or derbies - Would settle for Monster Trucks lol - Fav show to watch is the "Rimba Grand Prix")
Loves to watch big brothers (Perchkin/Shachini) & Tweak build (But he makes sure that he doesn't get to close)
Must have "Emotional Support Blankie" at all times . . . unless he's sharing it with his sister
(By all accounts Pikato is pretty sociable, he does get shy from time to time but warms up pretty quickly around strangers.)

Youngest of the Vegimals alongside her brother Pikato (she was the very last to hatch)
Very Shy (Not as shy as big brother Halibeet, but pretty shy)
(She was the last to hatch and had the hardest time hatching. When she finally did emerge she was very sickly and it took her a long time to recover. Shellington stayed by her crib every day making sure she got everything she needed, most days Peso had to drag him away so he could take care of himself & the also newly hatched Pikato)
Princess Pirate (For a tiny thing that barely talks, she has quite a fascination with Kwazii's pirate stories and is OBSESSED with the idea of being a "Pirate Princess" or "Princess Pirate", & was was very clear that those are two VERY different things)
(Yes that little plushy she carries around, that makes her scream anytime she's separated from it, IS Kwazii. No if's, no and's, no but's. That's her mini Kwazii, and she treats him as if he were the real thing. Emma was the one to make him for her, she also dressed him up and even carved a little sword for him out of drift wood.)

[ Headcanons Below - Please Read to the End ]
Remember when I keep making promises to make something and then they take way too long to actually make? . . . Yeah me neither . . . ANYWAYS!!! Hopefully you all made it this far!
I put so much thought and effort into their new designs and I really wanted each of them to be as accurate to the canon/fanon as I possibly could. The main inspirations behind these guys came from a lot of my moots @cacartoon / @calamaroo / @urautismdiagnosis-wistie ! But a lot of it also came from Siren/Mermaid Imagery on Pinterest! Their outfits all came from there too haha!
There are so many wonderful artists who have redesigned the Vegimals and I love the pattern of "Sailor" Outfits I've found, but also some of the stuff I created back in 2024 for their first redesigns with all the overalls lol.
I also have a new headcanon! If you didn't notice our lovely Codish, she's sticking out her tongue in the picture and although it looks like a mistake that her tongue is whitish, it actually isn't! I had the fun idea when I was trying to color her about making her tongue the same color as the inside of a radish! (aka White lol)
So I've decided to extend that same idea to all of the other Vegimals! So every one of the Vegimals have a different colored mouth/tongue based on the inside of their respective vegetable!
I will also add that a lot of their lore that you'll see in the next post is based on the lore of @calamaroo & @urautismdiagnosis-wistie ! Seeing as they're some of my closest friends a lot of our ideas kinda bleed into each other, and because their "siren" ideas are so cool I got their permission and I'll be creating my own version of the Vegimals based off of there's!
Although I'm still trying to solidify if the Vegimals are actually sirens/mermaids/etc, I do actually have a definitive place of origin for them that I hope to extend into the blog! And YES!!! The vegimals get their OWN story arc that goes into their backstory! So I hope you all get excited to see that!
