just remembered that when I was little I used to think that for dating the only word for splitting was 'dumped' and for marriage it was only 'divorce' and I didn't like the word 'dump' so instead of finding a thesaurus or asking someone for other words, I decided that divorce should be used for breaking up all relationships of any kind. How I planned on convincing everyone else to go along with my plan based solely upon my limited vocabulary? No clue. But 7 year old me thought that breaking up with anyone was devastating so you should be able to divorce your boyfriend or your best friend.
