Friend (Sirius)

Charity had always found small things to take solace in; peaceful sunrises, the smell of old parchment, finishing the last page of a book, and the few friends who could understand her struggle with her parents. She was thankful for the people she could confide in, though lately that didn’t seem like enough. Hiding her true feelings away each and every day was draining, and watching her friends be so open about theirs left her feeling weak, like she wasn’t as good as they were because she couldn’t openly admit to what she felt.

Charity pushed these thoughts away as she hand wrote the card that accompanied Sirius’ wedding gift, trying to focus on how happy she was for her friend.

Congratulations! 

I’m so happy for you, you two deserve a lifetime of happiness. You’re so lucky to have found each other in this uncertain world, I couldn’t be more excited to see you two together.

Charity wiped away the tear that had slipped from her eye as she finished the card, slipping it into the envelope and tucking it under the ribbon on the present before making sure her makeup and hair still looked good enough to go to the reception party. 

Another friend moving on in their life, while she was still stuck living hers for someone else.

Couch

Charity collapsed on the couch in the Ravenclaw common room, her hair pulled up in a bun on top of her head and her robes now a mess underneath her. How could he be who she was stuck with. How could she end up with someone so absolutely vile when she saw so many other purebloods with ideals like hers. She let her head hang in her hands, trying to just get through these emotions when no one was around to ask questions so she could go back to putting on a good face. 

Sometimes she wished she had the courage to admit to what she believed in. Had the courage to stand up to her parents and their backwards way of thinking. To be who she was without fear and without worry. But that wasn’t in the cards for her. 

When some younger students started coming in through the entrance to the common room Charity lifted her head to greet them with a small smile, letting them all pass and go up to their dorms before she pulled her favourite Jane Austen book, Pride and Prejudice, out of her robes and transfigured the cover into one of her class books so she wouldn’t get any questions before settling into the couch a bit more to relax and re-read the book as the fire crackled not too far away.

The second his parents had spoken, Corban knew what was happening. He shouldn’t have been surprised, given they’d recently betrothed Elise too. That didn’t mean he wanted it, either. Love was stupid, and he sincerely hoped whoever he was marrying didn’t care who he hooked up with, or they were going to have issues. 

Reluctantly, Corban went to the door, answering it on behalf of his father. He was dressed fairly decently for once, much to his disgust. “Welcome to our home,” Corban murmured, plastering a charming smile onto his lips as he stepped aside to allow them to enter, resisting the urge to wrinkle his nose at the sight of Charity.

Charity and her parents stepped inside, her mother immediately going into comments about how beautiful the house was and how much Charity was going to love it. Charity put a polite smile on her face, nodding a little when her mother spoke to her and with the occasional small “yes, Mum” to prevent any further questions. Her stomach was turning, and she had to stop herself from showing her distaste and her fear of what she had been signed up for.

Charity’s father turned to Corban, “How’s school for you, Corban? Any plans for once you graduate?” He asked, wanting to make sure Charity would be well taken care of.

Estelle got to Care of Magical Creatures class early, she loved spending the extra time with whatever creature they were studying that day. The professor explained their assignment, that they were to pick a creature in their pairs and do a full presentation on the creature’s nature, how to care for it, and any other information that was relevant. He listed off the pairings and sent everyone to get to work. Estelle looked around, having not recognized the name of her partner, and hoped someone else looked just as lost as she did. Noticing the boy with slightly singed hair, she giggled a little and hurried over. “Elias?” She asked, and when he confirmed she grinned brightly. “I’m Estelle. Do you have any ideas for our creature? I was thinking maybe a hippogryph or a bowtruckle or maybe a niffler?” She rambled. Estelle had a bad habit of speaking very quickly when she got excited.

Elias normally liked to get to class early. However, with an incident in his dragonology class right before, he was actually a few minutes late, and was only excused when Professor Kettleburn seemed to notice the singing on his hair from the incident with a dragon. So, he stood in the back, and observed the rest of the class, curiously watching to see what they were going to be doing that day… but before long, it was announced they had to work on something in pairs. As soon as he heard Estelle’s name paired with his, he looked around, trying to spot the other student, before she came rushing up to him. “Oh, yeah, hey.” He said with a smile, before laughing a bit. He wasn’t going to say that they’d been in classes together for years, he knew she’d likely forget again… he just assumed she had more important things to keep track of. “I have a bowtruckle that keeps trying to follow me back to my room after classes, so I think encouraging that behaviour might not be a good idea… but the others would be good.”

Her brow creased a bit at his laugh, her head tilting a bit. “What’s funny?” She asked, rather confused by his reaction. Estelle didn’t put two and two together to realize it was her mistake and her memory was just doing her an injustice. She giggled a little at his story, “He follows you back? That’s adorable! Why don’t you just make friends with him, wouldn’t that be easier than making him go all the way home?” She asked curiously. She didn’t understand what could be so bad about an adorable little bowtruckle wanting to be your friend. “How about nifflers then?” She suggested, rather excited that she’d gotten to pick their topic.

A laugh escaped her lips, the girl having had one or two glasses of wine. It was her cousin’s wedding, after all. Spotting the other girl, she let out a laugh, “Someone had one too many, Char?” She teased, wrapping her arms around the other. “I love you too, but are you sure you don’t need water?”

As someone who doesn’t normally drink, Charity didn’t have much of a concept of her tolerance and it definitely came back to bite her in the ass this time. “No, I have a drink.” She slurred, raising her half finished drink to show Andromeda before taking another sip. “Are you having fun? I feel like I haven’t seen you in ageeeesssss.”

Charity had had one too many drinks at the wedding reception, and was rather sloppy. She wasn’t one to drink normally, and the free bar didn’t help her case. She had a half finished drink in her hand, her 6th or 7th of the night, when she all but fell into Andromeda. “Andyyyyyy!” She slurred, a big grin on her face. “Are you having fun? Do you know how much I loovee yoou?” She said with a small laugh, pulling her friend in for a messy hug.

Charity’s parents had sent her a letter requesting that she return home for a weekend in order for them to take her to a ‘special dinner’ to make a ‘big announcement’ and her heart sunk when she realized what that meant. They’d arranged a betrothal for her. She expected this after them bringing it up all summer, though she didn’t think it would happen so soon.

She reluctantly made it back to her parents on Saturday, spent the afternoon listening to her Mother talk about how she was going to love him and that she just had to keep an open mind. She got ready in the dress they’d bought her just for the occasion, tied a bit of her hair back because her Mother always insisted it looked better down even though she hated having her hair in her face, and then apparated with her parents over to the Yaxley’s.

Her Father knocked on the door, standing proudly and obviously very happy to have found a suitable match for his little girl.

Charity always tried hard to make her parents happy. She knew what being a pureblood meant to them and while she didn’t agree, she didn’t want to deal with the consequences of letting them down so she just took her responsibilities with a smile. She hid her true feelings and favourite books, and while she always tried to find ways to let her true nature shine she usually had to fake a smile and push through it.

That morning as she headed into the Great Hall for breakfast she glanced around for any familiar faces she could sit with and saw Caunus, who she knew her parents would approve of. Taking a deep breath she headed over with a smile. “Good morning.” She greeted, gesturing to the seat across from him. “Mind if I join you?”

Peter Pettigrew… wasn’t sure where his suit jacket had ended up. He knew he’d changed into the blue suit for the reception, hoping the color wouldn’t bring attention to his puffy eyes. The wedding itself had been beautiful, and perhaps it was the alcohol currently in his system, but he wasn’t sure he’d cry that much at his own wedding. If he had one. After the break he’d had, Remus’s mother’s funeral… He’d just enjoyed seeing one of his mates so happy. He took a sip from the glass in his hand, taking another sip. He’d had someone else fix him a drink for the second time that night, and this one was delicious. While he didn’t drink often, a wedding between two important people in his life was cause for celebration. He stayed by the drink table, watching the festivities going on as he merrily sipped his drink.

“Never going to be a bloody better pairing at this school,” Peter told the person next to him, small smile on his lips. “I think we all needed something good to happen. The world’s wild.”

Charity had never been much of a partier, or a drinker for that matter, but after the break she’d had she figured one or two couldn’t hurt her. Her hair was done in an updo, fancier than her usual bun with a few flowers tucked into her golden hair. Her dress was elegant, something typical for her parents to have bought her, a light blush pink with sparkles that caught the light.

She’d finished her first drink a little faster than anticipated and headed back to the drink table for another, spending the break locked up with her parents had apparently stressed her out more than she’d even realized. As she waited for her drink she heard the boy beside her and turned her attention to him. His words brought a small smile to her lips, turning to look at the happy couple as he spoke. “Yeah, we definitely did. What a great way to start off the year.”
