“You don’t not like it, we’re New Yorkers, we don’t find it pleasing. You know what, yes. New York makes sense, Lily is in New York. Your friends are there, our lives for the most part are back there. Are you happy here?” she asked honestly. Stepping back she knew his words were angry, she knew he was trying to express himself. “Why does it matter, Charles? Why? Is it that I slept with someone, that I slept with Daniel, or that it wasn’t with you?”

He frowned. “Lily is wherever her crazy mother wants to take her to. This week was Milan. And I wasn’t happy in New York either. So what is the big deal? I have a good job, a good house, and if you are not happy here, maybe you should go to New York.” He said, almost accusingly. “Please, don’t flatter yourself! You slept with someone in the work place, Donna. Sleep with whoever you want, just not in this fucking place.”.

“Charles…” she sighed sitting across from him, Donna didn’t know what to do. It had been a while since they’d actually had a full out conversation. Her indescresion with Daniel caused it to be a little more strained. “You know that isn’t all, why are you making this so difficult? You’re hurting too and you’ve been hurting since we moved here. You hate the sunshine, you hate the beach and the only island we belong is Staten. This is crazy we’re fighting!” she gestured between them. She couldn’t help but feel like this whole move was a mistake. “I know you, I’ve known you for more then 12 years. This isn’t just about me or us. It’s about this move, Kenna, Daniel, and New York. So please stop punishing me, stop keeping me at arms length and let me help.”

He put the papers and the glasses on the table and crossed his arms over his chest, leaning back in his chair. “──I don’t hate the sunshine.” He vaguely added between her words. Maybe he wasn’t fond of it, but he didn’t hate it, completely. “What do you suggest? Moving back to New York?” He asked. It was not impossible to do so, but did he want it? To give up on something was never much of his characteristic. “It is about you betraying my trust by fucking someone in the closet!” Charles said slightly louder than his usual

Daniel knew as of late Charles’ patience had been short with not only him but everyone in the office. “Okay, I’ll get to the library and work on a solution. The ones I have off the top of my head I’m sure you’re going to say; Unacceptable, Idiotic, or my favorite ‘Daniel get the hell out of my office.’ I’m gone as of yesterday. I’ll be in the library if you need me.”

Donna and Charles had been on the outs lately with one another. it was causing her to be more snappy with him then usual and she couldn’t help but need it to end. The day was over, everyone was gone home looking over her shoulder she saw him still in the office working on something. Standing up from her desk she marched into his office. “We need to talk. I’m tired of us being icy with one another, I miss our relationship before I fucked up ad slept with Daniel. I’m sorry, Charles.”

It was not unusual to catch Charles working late. It was just another day, after all, he had nothing to go back home to. His daughter was in another state, his friends as well, and Makenna── she was with another man. Charles was lonely, he just couldn’t voice it. He was too proud, which worsened his problem with Donna, the only friend he had there. He was reading by himself when she trotted in like he owned the place. He didn’t raise his glance, but he was barely paying any attention to what he was reading. “Is that all?” He asked, finally looking at her and taking off his reading glasses.

Daniel looked up at Charles standing up moving to the table in the office. “No you don’t pay me to sleep, I’m sorry, It won’t happen again.” Daniel said spreading out the files opening them. “Okay this is against Folsom food and their lawsuit.The women suing them are asking for 5 million between the ten of them.”

He simply rolled his eyes. That was not the first time he heard that. “── If I wanted to know what it was about, I would read myself.” He narrowed his eyes towards the younger man. “I want results, Davis. Solutions. I want you to do your goddamn job.” Charles complained aloud, pressing two fingers against the bridge of his nose and closing his eyes. He had a low level of tolerance to basically everything.

“Shit! I’m up, I’m awake.” Daniel said with a start as something was dropped on his stomach. Looking up to the man above him, he looked down at the files in his lap. Daniel rubbed his eyes and began leafing through the files.

Donna and Charles weren’t on the best of terms, for some reason, they were bickering more than usual. She had become more than his secretary, and that could be completely prejudicial for their work relationship. That was the reason that he had to go himself to get files from another floor, although Daniel should probably have done that. He entered on his office, to find the man basically sleeping on the couch. Charles rolled his eyes and walked to him, dropping the files on his stomach. “── This is your job.” He narrowed his eyes. “Do I pay you to sleep?”

Kono chuckled at his joke, she did have a habit of bingeing on tv on her days off. “Well maybe that’s true but if I get into trouble I’m hoping for some pro bono work.” she smiled and floated around him and watched his expression change with her words. Nodding in agreement to all of his words and to how he’d always provide for his daughter. The young officer felt a twinge of irritation when he finished like she’d insulted him and she actually meant to do the opposite but her mouth got ahead of her brain and she was quiet for a few moments. “Well as long as you’re in LA you should have the maximum amount of work and play. Which I’m good for both.” splashing him she ducked under the water and swam till she needed air, she’d swam a good 25 yards out and smiled she’d missed the ocean even though she saw it. Most days she was too busy to get in and it felt great it was like a second home. Looking back at Charles Kono swam back and up behind him, dunking him under the water to her amusement.

He laughed. “Oh, no. Haven’t you heard? We are only after money,” he shook his head, trying to stay serious, but he soon broke into a smile. Not that he was only after money, but, after a while, he stopped trying to change the world. Corporation Law somewhat just happened to him. It was great because neither side was completely guilty or innocent. There were better companies than other ones, obviously, but in the capitalistic world, they were all just after the money. The St. James Enterprise wasn’t a monster after all. Nor Henry or Makenna had done business with companies that used slave labor or explored children. In the end, it wasn’t a bad job. He turned away when she splashed water at him “Ouch,” he said, taking drops of the salty water off his face, and he ran his fingers through his hair. “I am more like the work hard──” he made a pause when she disappeared out of his sight, “and then work harder.” In the end, he was a workaholic.

Kono pushed him down the water, and he held his breathe, swimming around her legs and pulling her feet ‘till her whole body was under water as well, and he finally swam upwards.
