All there was was the irritating sound of a drip, followed by a drop. The sound rumbled in the quiet room as Devin kept his head turned towards the view outside of his medical prison. His teeth started to grit just so the dripping would be drowned out by something else. Nurses had come and gone, asking him questions about various things he didn’t give a shit about. He’d stare out the window, twitching a finger, before they’d finally give up and leave. There was no interest in hearing their scratching voices or answering their menial questions. There was hardly interest in breathing at the moment. To think that someone as hardened as former Corporal Devin Murphy would be in this situation is disturbing. As Matt’s boots hit the tile, Devin licked his stitched up lip, “Hey. I wasn’t expecting to see you here.”

"Yeah... I could say the same about you."

It doesn't come off with the same sharpness as it would from Erin, or the softness as it would from Ryan. The pilot's remark shook slightly, coated with worried concern. Just like a child's voice when they watch Superman fall from the sky. Hell, he might have been twenty-seven years old, but deep down, he still looked up to Devin. But even now, that hardly faded.

Both of his scrubbed clean hands wrung together as not-so-bright eyes searched the Irishman's face, lips twitching at the corners before he spoke. "Erin didn't tell me what happened, just that, uh... that you were here." A pause, long enough for a silence to fill the space between them. "What happened?"

He heard the news from Erin, who quickly left for her own business. She didn't even visit and placed the burden on the pilot's shoulders. Though, it wasn't so much a burden as it was a weight--heavy, cumbersome, awkward. To know Devin sunk into dark depths that even Matthew couldn't comprehend made him sad and way too distressed.

His car moved at the speed of molasses among the lunch rush traffic. He never noticed it before: the bustle of people up and down the sidewalks, the varying array of horn honks and loud voices upset at someone forgetting to turn on their blinker or missing the green light signal. He never cared to notice. There was never a rush.

Surprisingly clean boots carried the blonde through the doors of the hospital, straight to the front desk and next to the elevator. No gifts or balloons or flowers took up space in his hands. Only stagnant air and a nervous tension that never left his bones. No amount of shaking could rid him of that feeling.

Two knocks on the door and one shaky hand turned the doorknob, pushing the barrier between him and the other open. Chapped lips parted with no voice to start a sentence, not until Matthew pulled a chair beside the bed and sat himself down in it.

"...Hey, Devin."
