"Charlie, hi!" Jenna says enthusiastically, watching as the boy takes a seat in front of her. Having been sorted the same year into the same house, the pair have been friends for some time, "Yeah, I mean, it isnât the greatest, but itâs still noodles. I think the elves have been answering my prayers â or at least eavesdropping on my conversations.â
"Well as long as it tastes good I'm happy" Charlie says with a slight laugh. Smiling easily at the girl. "Probably the latter, they're always in the shadows, cleaning things without anybody realising. They're bound to hear a lot"
"Thereâs Chinese food for dinner? Score.â
"Wait, seriously? Awesome"
Actually, I donât. Tell me.
Mum got a promotion or something, wanted to throw a celebration dinner thing with all the family and insisted I went home for it.
Who doesnât like skipping stones?
I quite honestly don't know.Â
Iâm the best of the best, Charlie. The sooner you realize that, the better. Where have you been anyway?
Whatever you say love, whatever you say. Oh just family stuff, you know how it is.
No need to make a big speech about it, love. All you have to say is that youâve missed me.
Alright, maybe I missed you a little bit. What can I say? It's nice to have a pretty face around, and your company's not bad either.
Theyâre probably with their boyfriends, or maybe studying, or napping, or skipping rope â or skipping stones. Itâs getting much warmer out now.
Oh yeah, that's definitely it. How could I be so silly to forget that all the girls in this school just love to skip stones down by the lake.
I leave the castle for a week and all the pretty girls disappear by the time I've returned. Where have they all gone?
"Whatâs her name?" Tessa questioned, probably able to give him an answer if she knew who it was. She then shrugged her shoulders. "Oh, just this kid Kelson. Iâm not entirely sure he exists."
"Andy Doolittle" Charlie replied without much enthusiasm, much preferring this dance with Tessa than whatever part of the evening he spent with his actual date. "Never even heard of a person called Kelson" Charlie said, laughing slightly.
"I certainly hope so," she said, raising a brow as she glanced down, clearly impressed by his footwork. She kept herself close to him, mostly in fear of bumping into the other groups of dancing teenagers who could seem to a single step right. Tessa then tilted her head at him. "So, whereâs your date?"
"I'm not entirely sure actually" Charlie replied, looking over Tessa's shoulder towards the refreshments table, the last place he had seen his assigned date. "She was around earlier, but she seems to have disappeared. What about you? Where's the lucky guy that got paired with you?" Â Â
She positioned herself carefully against him in the middle of the dance floor, having taken enough lessons by now to know the steps properly, though she isnât nearly as good as Evelyn. âOf course you did,â she replies, laughing, âDonât step on my feet.â
Not that he'd admit it to anybody, but Charlie's mother made him take dance lessons as a child so he knew all of the steps and there was no chance that he'd step on Tessa's feet. "Don't worry, I know what I'm doing" he said with a smirk.
Tessa gasps, feigning surprise. âWhy, Charlie, I thought youâd never ask,â she teases, holding out her hand for him.
Charlie smirks, reaching out and taking Tessa's hand. "Well I couldn't ask you to dance straight away, I'd have to woo you with my wonderful conversation first". he teased back, leading her towards the dancefloor.
Quick! Important question: bacon or no bacon?
Bacon obviously. Is that even a question?
You canât approach a girl at a ball and not ask her to dance.
Well then, miss corner, will you do me the honour of accompanying me in a dance?
Are you going to keep talking or are you going to dance with me?
We can dance if you want.
You know, for some reason Iâm a little dubious. What was your name again, anyway?
Charlie, Charlie McCullen.
